  1. Zucchini is an excellent extender (that sounds mean)- non-offensive,easy to cook, goes w/ lots of other ingredients. I keep meaning to break out the spiralizer, but I usually just chop it up & throw it in.
  2. Salami, cheese, other cured meat...rolls, not sure of the best way to incorporate veggies, but definitely lots of water.
  3. I think about that sometimes when I pick up chicken from Su Pollo (I think it's $9 for a half chicken, a side (I usually get rice), sauces (white & green) & an afterthought salad (iceberg/carrot)- w/ a whole chicken ($5 or $6) from Costco, I will always go for Su Pollo. But then I justify it by throwing the bones in a crockpot, to make broth to throw over the pups' dinner. (Ok, I could do that w/ the Costco carcass, too- don't spoil my justification.) Su Pollo makes delicious chicken.
  4. Both of your meals sound absolutely delicious. I backed out of cooking my turkey in the smoker, because things are a bit chaotic around here. Believe it or not, this was the first time I've ever cooked a whole 14 lb turkey in the oven, it was pretty good, but I prefer smoked turkey. In a few weeks, things should settle down.
  5. They only have music the first Thursday of each month (just started this), all the other nights are quiet, I imagine.
  6. My first HH at Mount Vernon Inn- the band was really good, Kevin Kline band, I thought it was too loud initially-lots of Billy Joel/Van Morrison. The food was great- crabcake w/ mango salsa, next to no filler, & Mornay chips, potato chips w/ bacon, tomato, Mornay sauce. Once I could hear the waiter, I ordered Port City Wit. It was an older crowd, but they were still dancing next to the toile wallpaper & checked curtains. The exec chef & F&B manager were front & center all night, I had fun trying to talk to all my friends. Looks like a great place to spend HH over the summer. Thank you to Leah, who picked up our tab, hope we can reciprocate.
  7. I couldn't tell you, we both got chicken, which was hot & fresh. It's a small place, w/ 3-4 other tables occupied while we were there.
  8. I did the suburban DMV version of checking out a new restaurant (not really), I went to an open house, & I hated the same thing, 'ugh, a corner lot'- my DH was going on about the upgrades, & all I could think was, 'no privacy'. But on the scale of things, an investment in a SFH is a whole lot less than a restaurant- the food sounds pretty good, & you had me at good fries, I will forgive almost anything for good fries. It sounds like this place has a good shot.
  9. I directed my son here for his prom dinner- it must have been acceptable, or. I would have heard about it. I still think that our options at this end of the county are at least as good as anywhere else. I'm kind of astonished when I think about the food I can get in a 5 mile radius, of course, I grew up in the sticks.
  10. I had lunch w/ my son here yesterday, he got a chicken Parmesan sub, I got a chicken souvlaki sandwich, & we split a Greek appetizer plate. He was a little thrown off when I said the 3rd dip (other than hummus & tatziki) was probably taramasalata (& explaining cod roe). My sandwich was good, & messy, I don't think you can tackle this delicately. Fries were wickedly hot, right out of the fryer.
  11. I would cook them together, they may take longer than you think, & it's not a problem to leave them smoking overnight (as long as you've loaded up the charcoal). I have finished butts in lots of 'hail mary' situations, in the oven, slow cooker (what a nightmare). With pork, I think longer is better, almost impossible to overcook, but if it's under, you won't be able to pull it.
  12. Chili, rice, salad, cornbread, & caramel pretzel Klondike bars for dessert.
  13. From limited experience, I like Kogiya, To Sok Jip, & Miso (but I can't vouch for the wait time, I mostly have lunch). & Soju Sarang is one I'd like to try, the reviews are so mixed, it's either great or horrible.
  14. That sounds delicious, I was going to second the idea of pulled pork, because it's easy, most people like it, & you can always freeze leftovers. & your sides sound great, now, just fix your drink ahead of time, enjoy your guests, & don't worry about cleanup until the 5th. Happy Independence Day!
  15. I don't bake nearly as much as I used to- I have no taste for desserts (don't watch 'Chopped' after the entree round either), & my kids don't ask for them, either. But I made a batch of biscuits the other day, after having some awesome biscuits for breakfast down in NC (& over the course of several days, I ate them all-my husband is eating healthy), & they were amazing.
  16. On the way down to NC a couple of weeks ago, we stopped at a Cookout (which I had never heard of) & I had a caramel cheesecake milkshake, because I had had a salted caramel milkshake in Carlisle, PA a week before (probably my first milkshake in 10 yrs)- it's a slippery slope, I'm up for trying any milkshake that comes my way.
  17. Rough, he's going to have to have hospital food until release, & after that, it's up to him to monitor his sodium intake. & I feel for him, as a sodium lover, who suffers from hypertension. There is no substitute.
  18. Or radler (soda & beer), I just learned that, from asking Forge Brew Works, but I haven't tried diluting my beer yet (who needs the added sugar from soda
  19. My lunch here today was delicious, why am I the only one who ever mentions it? (OK, I realize it is situated in the back of beyond, far south Fairfax co.)-it was a full house (not difficult, it's very small) & my gai pad ka prow had me sweating, in a good way, within minutes, even though I chickened out & asked for a spice level of 5-6. My friend got the drunken noodles, not spicy, 1, & she still complained it had too much kick for her. I told her she needed to try something else off the menu.
  20. I agree, I've cooked my own 'jerk chicken', but it's chicken thighs smoked in a Weber Smoky Mt. (Closed pit), then w/ added commercial jerk marinade (I don' make my own, because I don't cook it often enough). The marinades I've used are Walkers Wood, Jamaican & very spicy, & St. Ann's Bay, VA Beach, less spicy, but delicious.
  21. We had lunch there today, before doing the tour at Port City, & I think that was our overall assessment, too. J got the blue plate special, pulled pork & 2 sides, & said the cucumber salad & slaw were very good, & the pork was OK. I had a grilled chicken sandwich, & it was carbonized, left on the grill a minute or 2 too long, but the fries (which were also overdone) were ok. The tour & beers at Port City were wonderful.
  22. I am also drinking a saison, from Forge Brew Works, not nearly as poetically named. I think we're going to try & hit the NoVA Brewfest in Leesburg this weekend.
  23. At this point, I can make all the dates (& I have a lot of reserve supplies-tablecloths, utensils, etc.). I'm sure it's going to be an epic picnic.
  24. We went on Sunday, tried 2 kolsches-Berlin & Keller, hefeweizen, & oatmeal stout, refilled the growler w/ Berlin style kolsch, nice & tart. We watched a little of the France/Honduras match, the tables were filled (I think they have 3 or 4), & there were a couple of dogs, too- Josh commented that we could never take our dogs out, he thinks they're not well trained.
  25. Back from a quick weekend trip down to Sneads Ferry for my niece's high school graduation, managed to eat quite well. Friday lunch at Riverview was excellent, in addition to my regular favorite, shrimp & deviled crab, okra/slaw, we split apps of steamed clams & "blackened soft shell crab bites", which weren't particularly blackened, but had just a dusting of cornmeal, deep fried. I can't believe that LIzzy tried clams & clam strips & soft shelled crabs in one visit, she has certainly tried some new (to her) foods lately. After a tortuous 3.5 hr grad ceremony, my DS (who was the lucky one w/out a ticket) picked up DeNoia's pizza (I had mine for breakfast the next morning). Then for my 2nd breakfast, we went to Madison's $7.99 AYCE breakfast buffet-really good, & I don't really like breakfast food, but their biscuits were just short of mind blowing (can you say that about a biscuit?)- little rolled cheese omelettes, fresh home fries, curly bacon, tons of fruit, & a full dessert spread. That confused me, but after 10:30 they roll right into a lunch buffet, so they probably just get dessert out early. Lizzy surprised me again by tackling an enormous pork chop smothered in gravy, & I can't even begin to list what Tom ate- he had at least 4 full plates (he's doing a tough mudder today). Saturday night, my sister & her DH threw a huge graduation party for Claire- a pig, BBQ chicken, sides mostly from Piggly-Wiggly- potato salad, slaw, bkd beans, other homemade salads, cakes, cupcakes, fruit- you get the picture. After dropping Tom off for his race outside Richmond this morning, E & I rolled home, I may not be eating again for awhile.
