  1. Wonton does not mean eating clouds. There is another name for wonton that does mean eating clouds. Hope that clarifies the confusion. I don't think wonton means anything.
  2. Cause it's fun and people have time to waste? It also allows me to calibrate my taste with those of fellow posters. This is really important since I can then weigh the various posters' opinions. For example, I recently asked for a list of top 5 pizza joints. People who posted their five favorites are much more helpful than people who simply nominated one pizza joint. I happen to love 2 Amys so I'm more likely to follow the taste buds of people who also love 2 Amys.
  3. My understanding is if you're in North Korea, you'd eat boiled shoe soles in the winter. Anyway, my Korean friend tells me that Koreans don't usually eat family style in restaurants? Is he out of his mind? By way of example, I told him when we (i.e., my family) order soon doo boo, it's always shared like any other soup but says most Koreans don't share. He thinks I'm nuts when I go to a Korean joint and end up ordering BBQ, pancake, japchae and soup.
  4. I sometimes have navel lint. Went to Jasmine Garden (Rt. 50 and Gallows Rd) with a Korean friend for lunch. He couldn't eat meat so I ordered spicy fish filet (H21 on JNH menu, they also have the dish known as H20 on JNH menu), stir-fried baby bok choy, and seafood pan-fried noodles. At authentic Chinese restaurants, you can find a variety of seafood (crabs, clams, squid, various types of fish -fried, steamed, braised, etc.), whereas most Americanized Chinese joints only serve shrimp. Go to Hong Kong Palace and get the cumin fish - it's fantastic.
  5. Going to Chifa, Jose Garces' Chinese Peruvian restaurant in City Center. We love Peruvian food but we've been spoiled by eating 5 meals at Gaston Acurio's restaurants in the last 2 years. And we were on a cruise where every meal was personally prepared by Pedro Schiaffino (lucky for us that he happened to be on the ship that week). Did the Gino's vs. Pat's - we think it's a tie there, but we prefer Jim's over those two. Out in the 'burbs we've been to Chubby's and it's good. This time I'll be in Steve's/Chink's hood so I might as well try them out. We roadtrip with our dogs when possible and we've stayed at Lowes before but this time we're staying at the Residence Inn (cheaper than Lowes).
  6. Amada only had a 5:30 table when I looked and it's now all booked. Unfortunately my wife has to work on Sat morning so I scrapped brunch plans on Sunday at El Vez in favor of visiting the Reading Terminal (after all, our hotel is only 2 blocks away). As it stands, we'll do Chifa on Sat. night (and I'm ready to hate it because I don't think anyone can do a "research" trip to a foreign country and presume to cook its cuisine, and I don't think the restaurant offers much in the way of Peruvian cuisine), taste as many things as possible in Reading on Sunday morning - Dinic's, Herschel's deli (pastrami and bialy?), and then try Chink's and Steve's Prince of Steaks in the afternoon while my wife visits her friend. I don't eat scrapple and couldn't care less about sweets, so what else must I try in Reading?
  7. We didn't get the Cookies on time (Fedex blamed the snow) and Uncle Chip's fully refunded my order without my asking. In additon, they're sending some fresh ones free. I had to post because this is exemplary customer service (unlike Fedex which gave my wife the runaround).
  8. I'd suck it up as a learning experience. It's happened to me and I never thought to ask for my money back. I take responsibility for my own mistakes.
  9. I was in Ohio this weekend, somewhere between Akron and Canton. There's not much around but fastfood and chains so I made a visit to Quaker Steak & Lube. Apparently there will be a branch opening in Manassas, VA. As for the wings, my medium wings were fried crispy initially but doused with too much sauce (which is also a bit creamy, weird for buffalo wings in my opinion).
  10. Ate at Astrid y Gaston, Chicha (an Acurio joint in Cusco) twice, and some other restaurants in Cusco, Sacred Valley and Aguas Caliente (none worth noting).....the best food is at Gaston's joints. Behind the tamales are ceviche sampler and Peking Guinea Pig (amazing). In Aguas Caliente, we stayed at Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo (an eco-resort that doesn't have TV or minibar). In the Sacred Valley, we stayed at Casa Andina Private Collection. We ate at the on-site restaurants because there's nothing else nearby or rain deterred us. Nice places to stay but not great food.
  11. Thanks, I hope to taste some of those cookies soon!
  12. Clyde's isn't a bistro. I was hoping for something like Balthazar (NYC) or Daniel Boulud Brasserie (LV) or Luke (New Orleans). Doesn't Cafe du Parc have a raw bar? What about Brasserie Beck?
  13. Is there a good bistro in town with a great raw bar and a decently priced seafood platter?
  14. My wife made the grocery run this morning. If I feel like it, I can pick up some fancy beers on my way home tomorrow knowing that we will be well fed as long as the power doesn't go out. We have all kinds of thau-sages, ground meat for chili, and cold cuts for sammiches.
  15. We live in McLean. Nothing but chains around....I thought about order Lou Malnati's from Chicago...but that's too obvious for me and not for her.
  16. The world would be a better place if deaf people with "Steve" as their first name have a steady diet of fugu.
  17. Why don't you send an e-mail to your buddy Koji regarding what kind of texture squid kara age is supposed to have? Also, ask if freezing makes squiddies tough.
  18. With squid, you can have them from raw to dried and a whole range of chewyness from none to tough. With a fried leg, I personally prefer it very tender but that's not to say a little chewy is wrong cause it might be intentional and that's how their Japanese clients like it (most of the clients were Japanese today). These legs were fried but with very little batter and the texture is almost like they were grilled. At least the flavor was good.
  19. https://www.sushiyoshivienna.co/ The a la carte sushi may be more expensive since 1 order = 1 piece but they have many varieties of fish. For lunch I had Boston Mackerel, Spanish Mackereal, and Horse Mackerel, in addition to Sardine, Yellowtail, Yellowtail Belly, and Uni. Each piece was between $2 to $3 dollars (the sardine was $1.85) sushi_yoshi_sushi_a_la_carte_.pdf Due to the impending snowpocalypse, I also ordered some fried squid legs (kara age) and something they called seafood pancake. The squid legs were medium sized fried 1 leg at a time and not a clump of squid legs like fried calamari. The legs were a little chewy, but I suspect that's how they're supposed to be. Nevertheless, I enjoyed them without the tartar sauce that came on the side. Not on the website are two pages of specials, of which 1 was labeled Japanese small plates (lots of grilled jaws and fish). The seafood pancake was one of the specials but it's nothing like a Korean seafood pancake. This is really a rather large fishcake topped with some tempura shavings and a slightly spicy soy based sauce. The first bite was a bit fishy but I soon got used to the favor and enjoyed the dish. This is the best sushi in Vienna (not many others in the area - Sakana, Sweet Ginger, Sushi Yama, Konami are others I've been to) and the additon of other specials makes this place one of the best yet unsung Japanese restaurants in the DC area.
  20. I just got an e-mail from US Air saying my miles are about to expire. I suppose Open Table could do the same and send out an e-mail reminder.
  21. They pay you to make a reservation. What's not to like?
  22. I don't like sweet dishes, which is why I only had a small bite of each baklava. I didn't think the beet was overly sweet - you probably don't like it because it's a vegetable. I got this e-mail yesterday from my wife - picture an Asian doctor
  23. Also, I should have posted this in Help. Could someone move it?
  24. That beet dish was amazingly good. Makes me wonder why when I was growing up, every beet related product I ever had tasted like crap. I almost have a beet phobia.
