  1. As someone who went to school at Pitt and went to some great lengths to find good places for the friends/family that would come visit, here are my recommendations in/around the city: Grand Concourse - Higher end seafood in an old train station with a great view of the river. Right at the end of Station Square. Tessaros - One of the other posters mentioned this for their chicken sandwich, however, I think their burgers border on what we have here in Arlington at Ray's (without the fancy accoutrements). They have a butcher on the premises who grinds their meat daily. As its in Bloomfield and is definitely a neighborhood favorite, be prepared to wait for a seat. Church Brew Works - As mentioned by many others, great beers. In terms of food stick with the pierogies and pizza which I always found excellent. Fat Heads - Great sandwiches and thick cut chips on the South Side. Tambellini's - Right across the bridge from PNC park. Tiny Italian place serving great italian american fare. I won't go into the "O" or Primantis since many posters have already touched on them. Same with Pamelas.
  2. I'm hoping that some of the fine folk that peruse this site might be able to help me out in my search for Shipyard Summer Ale. I had it while I was up in Maine and while I concede there are better beers out there, for whatever reason I have a bad hankering for it. While I have been able to find Shipyard IPA, Shipyard Export, and Shipyard's Old Thumper at some of the stores in the area, I was wondering if any of you knew if there was a store that could special order it or happened to carry it within the greater DC Metro area. I've been combing online and coming up empty handed... Thanks in advance!
  3. With the welcome respite from all the rain we've had recently I headed to Surfside around 2pm on a Monday to celebrate closing on my new condo (!). Given it was a tad after the lunch rush, I wasn't really surprised to find the place sparsely populated. I ordered the steak tacos which were done to a nice medium rare with a ton of grilled onions, nice dollop of guac, and some sour cream barely held together by 2 corn tortillas...I couldn't eat them fast enough. As the others in this thread have said, the rice/beans were pretty standard. That said, chased with a cold Red Stripe on the roof deck, it was a great afternoon treat for around 18 bucks (after tax/tip). I HIGHLY recommend sitting up on the roof deck if the weather is nice...although wait until you order your food before heading up there, since its a pretty large staircase and they churn the food out rather quickly.
  4. Like the above poster (from way back in 2007 ) I've been driving by this small sandwich shop in the Pallisades for quite some time. I was in last weekend with the significant other and I have to say, we had two of the best sandwiches that I've had since I moved to DC (5 years). -Tried the Smith Point (roast beef with horseradish mayo, red onions, havarti, on pumpernickel). Had a great bite due to quite a bit of horseradish combined with the red onions. The bread was nice and soft but provided a great base for a very hearty portion. She had the Surf Side (of which I stole a few bites) which was also delicious, the uber-soft sour dough went perfectly with the small bites of bacon and smooth avacado spread. Combined with the course ground mustard and turkey, it was another home run. I noticed they make shakes/ice cream etc (apparently they are spinning of a new place called "Something Sweet" across from 2 Amys...but was at 2 Amy's about a week ago and couldn't place which spot it was going up in) but was too full from my sandwich to indulge.
  5. In terms of great knives that don't break the bank, I don't think you can beat the Forschner's by Victorinox. I've had a set of these for about a year and a half and they've been absolute workhorses. I consider myself to be an above average home chef and I've recommended these knives to at least 10 of my friends, all of whom have come back with raves. I also like the fibrox handles on these...while they're a bit of a pain to clean, they offer an extremely comfortable/non-slippery grip that I appreciate when I'm carving a turkey or deboning a chicken. For a set that will set you back under 160 bucks, I don't think you can beat it.
  6. Hello all, My name is Dave and I'm excited to join the site. I consider myself to be an above average cook but while I do love cooking/entertaining at home, I really enjoy exploring the culinary side of our city (and its 'burbs). I also just moved to the Cleveland Park area from Arlington so I'm looking forward to having some of the best (in my opinion) dining in the city not too far from my doorstep! My favorite spots in the city are: Central, Dino, the bar at Palena, and 2 Amys
