So last weekend I took Nick Cho up on his offer . Had a blast. Learned a lot. Drank a lot of espresso, most of it pretty bad. Now that I have a real taste for it, where do I go to get the good stuff? Is there any in DC? Where are your favorite places, and why do you like them? [Murky coffee has its own thread. Starbucks need not apply] ...help? --- The following posts have been split into separate threads: Big Bear Cafe (marketfan) Bourbon Coffee (DaRiv18) Tynan Coffee and Tea (DaRiv18) Mayorga Coffee Roasters (hillvalley) Restaurant Eve Bistro (goodeats)

I finally got to stop at Blue Ridge Seafood on Route 29 in Gainesville. Website here. The parking lot of this establishment is generally pretty full and I needed to find out what all the fuss was about. The place is not fancy inside, the only placemats and tablecloths are brown paper for eating seafood on. The chairs are stackable, or picnic tables. The restaurant is fairly disjointed and not someplace you go for ambiance. They have a bar, I know they serve beer and wine. BUT we had good fried shrimp, fried oysters, hushpuppies. The side of zucchini had a sizeable onion flavor and chunks I could do without. The lobster and crab dip was good, but there weren't discernible chunks, I have had better, but it wasn't bad crab dip in any way and it was good on a cold windy night. We both had glasses of Gray Ghost Chardonnay. This place is like an Eastern Shore/Beach restaurant in the middle of the Virginia heartland, but the seafood was of better quality than I would have thought not having that proximity to water. Anyway, I would definitely stop again, we normally have the dog when making treks up and back so we just normally don't do sit down.

Have seen the sandwich shop Local Foods show up on a few 'best in the country' lists for sandwiches lately. They lived up to the hype. If you need a lunch spot in Houston, this is it. Great local beer selection too.

The Waterfront Market & Cafe held their press preview last week and friends and family grand opening on Sunday. The official public opening date has been announced as next Tuesday, November 26. Based on photos from the various events, the space looks great and it should be a very nice addition to the quite limited options located directly on the water. There's definitely a push to draw locals in with the "back to your waterfront" tag line. The menu will include custom sandwiches, salads, prepared gourmet items, beer and wine to go (or drink there), fresh sushi, pastries, etc., with similar items available for purchase at the retail market. More specifics here, via LocalKicks. Jody Manor, the owner of Bittersweet Cafe and Catering (in business since 1983), knows a thing or two about creating a sustainable, successful business, so here's wishing him a long run in this latest venture. I'm looking forward to checking it out soon after it opens!

Fresh Grill opened this week on Fairmont Avenue in Bethesda. When I checked the menu it was another burger place, which would put three in three blocks on this side of Bethesda (Burger Joint, Fresh Grill and Wing Hub. The first thought is that there is no way this area will support another burger place, especially if it is mediocre. That is what it was mediocre and overpriced (I know that is shocking in Bethesda). A basic burger is 7.95 plus toppings extra buck or two. This week is 20% off for their opening week special (not advertised). I wanted to like it and it wasn't bad - Just not good either. I think salt would have gone a long way (maybe even made it good). Flavorless was the issue, I keep thinking. They are serving fresh fried potato chips and they were very crispy and fresh, but every bite I took was obviously missing something (I just kept thinking these would be great with some kosher salt and quality parmesan cheese). If you try this place, you need to remember to say medium rare, I was told everything is cooked medium well unless you ask for less. I asked for less and thought it still could have used about a minute or so less on the grill - This burger still needed a quality salt seasoning, The bun had nothing either. The counter help was very nice and really trying but needs some training and settle in time. Bottom Line - If they learn to add salt and keep up the quality they have some potential, but my thought while eating was that I would have enjoyed BGR more
