  1. In a fit of hubris... I left the map at home figuring that I knew exactly where Fortune was and, having read the map quickly, could get us there. At the risk of alienating all northern Virginian's, we were stuck in Dante's 8th level of hell (reserved for those stupid enough to drive in Virginia on a Sunday, or during rush hour, or during not rush hour, or, say, any time except 3:25am and 3:27am on certain Tuesdays when there is actually only a small traffic jam at every light) we spent an hour getting from 495 to Bailey's crossroads. Wound up at Peking Gourmet, which isn't. Maybe tonight is a two negroni night as well. Ah well...
  2. B and I went to Hakka Restaurant (4401 Cabrillo Street (45th Avenue)) in Outer Richmond. We're definitely returning... The menu is voluminous. Pictured are most of the Hakka regional specialties and some of the Cantonese ones. Apparently they give you a complimentary bowl of soup as a sort of a first course. Tonight it was lovely chicken broth with shredded chicken and turnip. The broth was deeply flavored and redolent of garlic and ginger. Sautéed Chinese broccoli with rice wine. Pork stomach with salted preserved vegetable. Slightly chewy and crunchy with a touch of vinegar. Definitely addictive. There's that texture thing going on. B wasn't a fan but I loved it. Home style steamed sea bass, served with black beans, garlic, ginger and scallion. It was awesome. Red bean soup. Again, a complimentary bowl, served for dessert. Lightly sweet and just right. Portions are huge. The total for all this food was $62, not including a 20% tip. We have tons of leftovers too.
  3. If you want excellent Peking Duck, you can hardly do better than Peking Duck House. It has been in business for over 25 years at 28 Mott St. in NYC (there's also a midtown location), and I recently reacquainted myself with the place, after a long hiatus, when a friend wanted to go out for"¦guess what? So off we went, 3 or 4 of us from the building. And all I can say is this place totally rocks - at least for the Peking Duck. I'm not responsible for the rest of your order. Remember, the whole of Chinatown is fairly mediocre; the whys of that are a subject for another post (lousy cooks, shitty ingredients "“ you be the judge). The way the menu at Peking Duck House is set up, they try to trick you into ordering a lot more food, for a lot more money, than you really need. The "special house dinner," or the "Peking Duck dinner" are just money grabbers, so do as I do. Order a whole Peking duck, a couple of apps "“ say pickled cabbage and mock dock made from tofu skin, a safe vegetable dish (forget about stuff like snow pea leaves "“ not gonna happen) and another stir fry and you'll easily have enough food for 4 people. And it'll end up a lot cheaper than the dinners they put together for you. Pix and a bit more are here...click.
  4. I keep on driving on rte one and the lights have been out at Afghan Restaurant for a while - They have the best flatbread and used to have an awesome all-you-can-eat lunch special. I saw a sign that seemed to be offering up the space for redevelopment. Anyone know if they are ever re-opening or are the days of great bread, slurpy noodle soup and crazy- generous kebab platters over?
  5. Hi, I'm Michael, a DR.com supporter and friend and owner of Quench, in Rockville MD. In April 2013 we were named favorite new restaurant by the Restaurant Association of MD, and now we're more actively branching out into catering and events. We've hosted class reunions, weddings a bat mitzvah and numerous parties and corporate events ranging from 20 - 120 people at our restaurant. We also work off-site, providing catering services for The Glenstone Museum, Mercedes Benz, Medimmune and countless others. Again, size of event is not an issue, as we've done everything from a 10 person private dinner to 900 people at Euro Motorcars Bethesda.   6. As the situation would have it, I stayed in the Gwynn Park Days Inn last week (near Security Mall). First 7 PM, then 8 PM, then 9 PM, fast approached, then passed. I was getting hungry, and my options were becoming limited. Paradise Indian Restaurant is *the* restaurant, and I mean, the *only* restaurant at the Days Inn. In DC-based terms, it's not unlike Sangam was before it closed - an odd, virtually unknown Indian banquet hell dominating the center of a fleabag motel, with no apparent reason for being there, other than possible Indian ownership. Rather than take a 9:30 PM chance on something else, I decided to make the best of a potentially bad situation. I walked into the restaurant, studied the environs and menu carefully, and decided it had a strong Pakistani influence. They advertised that their goat and lamb were Halal (a very good sign), and so I went simple, Halal, and rolled the dice on the Lamb Curry ($12.95) which came with basmati rice. I ordered a side of Butter Naan ($1.95) and Raita (which they forgot to include, and fortunately forgot to charge me for). I asked for a plate, fork, and napkin, took my meal back to my room, and enjoyed it with a 2004 Mugneret-Gibourg Echezeaux (did I just say that?) Yes, yes I did. And wow, what a combination. Think "Ravi Kabob" when you think of Paradise's "Lamb Curry." It was boneless chunks of halal lamb, in a brownish, granular gravy, without much of anything else going on, and it was delicious. Spicy, but not too spicy, with the essence of lamb flavor in every single chunk. The rice and the naan were neutral vehicles to sop up the curry which was extremely Pakistani in spirit. For a 9:30 PM carryout dish, in a crummy interstate motel, and a complete unknown Indo-Pak restaurant, I'm willing to bet I had one of the best dishes served in Gwynn Park on this evening. Call it blind luck, skill in evaluation and ordering, or a gift from God, but just call it ... victory. Not awesome, not italic, and this restaurant is known more for its banquets and buffet lunches; but, gosh this meal was good, and it could have been really, really bad. Whoever butchers and wholesales this lamb is doing a very, very good job. A disaster averted!
