  1. I had the fried green tomatoes with a glass of Riesling at the bar last night. Tangy, crisp and zesty...perfection!
  2. I'm there - unsure of dish or friends. Updates to come...
  3. Sorry, it was last month. I think they're having an Italian winemaker visit at the end of May. I don't work for them anymore, but the website should have all that info (www.planetwineshop.com).
  4. Last night was Tonkatsu with Bulldog sauce & sesame seeds, rice and sauteed zucchini accompanied by a beautiful Steininger Steven Holl Gruner Veltliner. Was going to have ripe strawberries and angel food cake for dessert, but was too full. Um, Laniloa, clams commit suicide?
  5. Warka got the job done curbing the Ethiopian craving today at lunch. We ordered the vegetarian combo (curried lentils, split lentils, greens, cabbage, salad) and a the Kay Sega Wot (red pepper beef). While the seasoning was a tad on the light side and service was excruitatingly slow, it was a really nice meal for a measly $21 for two. I'm now waiting for the food coma to set in.
  6. Ethiopian outside of the District?! Please can we try Warka?
  7. Lunch tomorrow somewhere to get me over this week's hump?
  8. Anyone up for Austrian wines and light hors d'oeuvres tonight in Del Ray? Clickity
  9. Anne-Marie Schmidt, who recently left Star Catering, has started her own BBQ Catering Co with her husband Michael. He makes some mean meat! PM me and I'll send you her contact info.
  10. I'm really excited about an upcoming event at Planet Wine in Del Ray and haven't seen anything posted on their website about it so thought I'd post here. The shop is hosting visiting Austrian winemaker Eva Steininger of Weingut Steininger and importer Klaus Wittauer for a special tasting event this Thursday at 7:30. Price is $25 for the tasting which will include hors d'oeuvres. I LOVE their wines...vibrant, fun whites...perfect for warm weather (which will eventually get here, right?). Check out their portfolio here. Call the shop to RSVP at 703.549.3444. See you there?
  11. Where do they find these people?!
  12. The current dinner menu looks amazing! I might have to take that trip to the wine country sooner rather than later.
  13. What a fun site! I might just use it today...have a craving for some Pad Thai now that pasta, rice and other grains are back in the diet!!!
  14. Is anyone going that will not be acting as booth babe for Mr. Parrott? I'd love someone to roam with.
  15. The annual matzo lasagna feast was served up to the usual suspects (10 in total) tonight at casa oro. This year we dined on matzo ball soup, a simple mixed greens salad, lasagna (choice of meat or veggie...for those at the table really keeping kosher), and a flourless chocolate mousse cake. Dinner was accompanied by four bottles of some kind of red (a Linden Claret, some Bordeaux from Trader Joe's, and a couple of California pinot noirs)...oh and a bottle of kosher-for-Passover Coca-Cola. I love that stuff!!!
  16. Tortilla Factory?! What are you boys doing tomorrow around 12:30?
  17. Having recently deserted food civilization for the techy corridor out here near Dulles, I have been exploring day by day for fun new places to grab lunch, but it's not as much fun to do so alone. Anyone nearby who would like meet me for a mid-day meal? Mel
  18. I knew the Gottlieb brothers in high school and practically grew up with baked goods from their grandfather's bakery which closed right after I went to college. Gottleib's has been critically raved in the past (if that matters at all to you)...one of the brothers was sous at Inn at Little Washington for a few years as well. Gottlieb's
  19. Just in case anyone cares - & I'm not sure you do - but my comment about the burger temp wasn't a criticism. I hadn't even noticed the server didn't inquire how I'd like the burger cooked, and I am by no means a shrinking violet when it comes to ordering a dish how I'd like it (my family calls me Sally from time to time). If the burger hadn't been cooked to my preference when I got it, I would have asked them to put it back on the fire for a few minutes. In this case, I was quite content.
  20. I ordered the burger last night and had no idea until reading your post that we had an option about the cooking temp. When I ordered, I was asked if I wanted bacon or cheese, which in hindsight might have been a mistake to pass on, but never was asked how I'd like the meat cooked. In hindsight, I'm not sure I'd order the burger again when there are certainly other items on the menu that looked tempting. As for the asparagus salad, the faux gras, the puffs (which were the highlight of the meal), and the kit kat bar...yum! The fact that I walked in to a group of friendly faces coupled with fantastic service made the evening all the better. I'm looking forward to returning.
