  1. Article from Washingtonian about how Nara-Ya came to be. Steve chose this restaurant. I didn't object because I haven't heard much about this joint at all. This place is on the third floor above La Vie & Mi Vida with a nice view of the water. The dining room is very pretty, but you can't eat the view. We started with uni butter that came with very few rice crackers for $15. There was no uni flavor and I had no great desire to eat plain butter with rice crackers. We also had a roll called "Its Business Time" for $22. Avocado, king crab, unagi, lemon zest, mascarpone and the whole thing is tempura battered and fried. The big issue is that the rice was mushy, as in they cooked it with too much water. Second course was Smoked Zuke Tuna ($27) - raw tuna served under a cloche of smoke. In retrospect, I don't know why we would ever want to eat smoked tuna sashimi. The smoke doesn't enhance the flavor of tuna in any way. There was very little fish too. The Prawn Okonomiyaki ($24)was a tasty okonomiyaki serve with 1 overgrilled prawn. I cut it in half and gave the tail end to Steve and he spat it out. Last course was green tea soba noodles ($23). The noodles were overcooked the kombu broth really just tastes like soy sauce. They can at least pan sear some scallops ($26). The table next to us was there just to put it on their social media. They each had a drink and one roll and spent most of the time taking pictures of themselves and chatting with the waiter. For the avoidance of any doubt, I do not recommend going to this place. Steve had to apologize for picking the place.
  2. Technically today is my Friday so when I saw the line for Buredo I decided to stick it out and take a little longer than I should for lunch. The staff was very nice and was handing out free wasabi peas to all of the people waiting patiently in line. I went with the Beatrix, which has yellow tail tuna and salmon sashimi, cucumbers, pickled napa cabage, green onion, 'tempura crunch' and unagi sauce. The fish was good quality - not Izakaya Seki or Sushi Capitol good - but not mediocre either. The rest of the ingredients were fresh and the size was bigger than expected. It cost almost $13 for finished product and I can't think of any other place in the neighborhood that you can get that amount of quality sushi for that price. Hopefully the amusement park roller coaster-esque line will shorten once the initial novelty wears off.
  3. First of all, apologies if there is already a thread on this. The search function wouldn't let me search for something with only three letters, and I looked through all the threads and didn't see anything. So has anyone ever been to Uni? What did you think? I'd never heard of it but am going with a couple of co-workers for dinner on Friday night. The Wash Post entry on it is interesting. "James Tan's neo-wave take on Japanese otsumami (small dishes) is a mix of tradition, innovation, trend and theater. He manages to keep all these plates in the air, although the juggling act gets a little uneven every once in a while."

BarredInDC.com has announced that Japonè (2032 P St.), Cafe Japonè, and its lounge, Sango Sho, have closed - the two-story operation has been open since 1986 - (congratulations, by the way, on a 27-year run). Of the three Japanese restaurants on the south side of P Street in West Dupont, only the more traditional Sakana (2026 P St.) remains, as Uni (2122 P St.) also closed within the past year.
  5. I've done Morimoto about a year ago and had an amazing meal. It's quite expensive, I think we blew about $400 for dinner for two with sushi, couple of small plates, desserts, and a very generous alcohol allowance, but much fun with food has been had by all and I felt it was worth it. It would help to go with someone who loves food, too. Also, once you've had a few drinks, a constant change of color of the walls boosts the fun and giggles.
  6. While staying on the edge of Old City at the Sheraton Society Hill, my daughter and I decided we needed to venture out for Sushi. Just a few blocks away we stumbled across Zento. It was a late Saturday lunch on a chilly afternoon and we were one of the few patrons at that hour. The service was attentive and fast...and the sushi quite delicious. We stuck with pretty basic sashimi and a couple of rolls and were pleased. The only downside was their lunch special was only offered during the week days and not on Saturday. Regardless, we would definitely recommend.
