  1. I rarely open emails from Wine Enthusiast, but coincidentally, the subject line in this morning's mail caught my eye, and I bit. Git Yer Wine Credentials
  2. Apols for putting spirits in a beer thread but didn't think this merited its own thread. The week after the Philly Beer Fest, the MD craft distilleries are showing down in the Pax River Naval Air Museum. Maybe two birds one stone with that? I believe they will have a 2nd tasting later in the spring in Frederick or close by. Upcoming Events by Maryland Spirits Guild
  3. Nigel Farage one of the leading instigators of the Brexit campaign, registered a new political party over the weekend, www.thebrexitparty.org for the purpose of fielding candidates in the upcoming elections to the EU Parliament----if the Withdrawal Agreement is delayed. As of last check they were claiming 48,000+ expressions of interest in joining within the first 48 hours of launch. I've seen a pro Brexiter claim that the ruling Conservative Party has only 70,000 members. Given the Brexit campaign's past record with dodgy numerical claims I'd treat both of those numbers with some suspicion. That said, given past accomplishments people have reason to be fearful of him, just like closer to home.
  4. Although I use the Costco next door, I haven't been to Old Line in years, must rectify. My understanding is that when they opened initially they had a good buyer, who has since left. They certainly have the biggest selection in Prince George's County. Best might be debatable. I haven't been to Silesia since Mike Tilch passed, I believe his brother sold it to people with money but not much wine experience. Town Center Liquors at the Riverdale MARC stop just south of the R.1/R.410 intersection has a surprisingly good selection of wine and beer. Haven't been there in years either though.
  5. First bill has been introduced in the Senate, Others are planned in the House, now that the primary opposer Pete Sessions no longer bangs the gavel. The speculation I had seen that Donny T. (or someone else) might make it part of a 2020 platform now sounds less far fetched..... Cannabis on The Hill
  6. A wise & astute poster opines on a suitable Y2K type abv. for Brexit day.... For some people March 29, arrives before the end of February..........
  7. I don't think that's what lawmakers and judges believe. That's more in the domain of IP law than tax policy. Creativity encompasses a broad spectrum.
  8. Never been, so can't offer any advice, but did hear something like the following on NPR, and would be interested in your impression on return. When the Quebec independence movement was at its zenith many corporations with HQs in Montreal fled to Toronto. Years later the result is that the city's tax base has shrunk to the point where they can't afford to repair sidewalks and potholes, and are well on their way to becoming the Detroit of Canada. I want to believe that's an exaggeration.........
  9. Not that I have anything against Jeffrey Goldberg, but The Atlantic was a literary and cultural gem long before he arrived. Owner David Bradley who turned it around financially recently sold a majority stake to the Emerson Collective run by Laurene Powell Jobs.
  10. I wonder if the rate and exemption threshold were both reduced by pick a number.....50% would those at risk (not me) find it more or less acceptable?
  11. I can't help being a pedant............. Current Russia has 11 time zones, 10 contiguous.........USSR breakup did not result in any TZ loss for Russia.. Russian Time Zones The world's longest regularly scheduled internal flight that you can book a flight on, is in the US, and crosses nine zones, New York to Honolulu.
  12. Although the US has the 4th highest rate globally, 40% the threshold is also high.$5M I believe. Ireland has a rate of 33% but the threshold is about $300K, ouch! Estate & Inheritance Taxes Globally
  13. It does! 😀 To say nothing of the environmental costs of producing beef..... Big Mac Index That problem will be alleviated soon. He's getting divorced........ Finland, AFAIK the only country that has so far experimented with it, is discontinuing, Universal Basic Income
  14. Now I better understand why I received so much email recently on cannabis legalization. Tennessee, Illinois, Minnesota, West Virginia, New Mexico, Wyoming, Nebraska, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Kentucky, and Connecticut, all have legislation of varying reach introduced. A little research revealed that in the western states where recreational (or as they call it "adult Age") is legal, there is an astonishing range of product available in multiple formats. Food, drink, smoke, pill, spray, candy, oil etc. Even petfood. It's being marketed every which way. I had no idea.
  15. Here's an excerpt from a longer smart posting on an EU discussion forum. I think Westminster and the UK media at a basic level is treating the entirety of the withdrawal negotiations as a political rather than a legal process. Hence their confusion when political actions have no effect. It's a category error. Someone else in the same discussion pointed out that unlike other counties, the British people are not sovereign, parliament is, and that gives MP's an inflated sense of their importance. Brits only relatively recently discarded the moniker of "subjects" in favor of citizens.
  16. I believe something similar to this is going on in NY and NJ........ HARRISBURG, Pa. - Gov. Tom Wolf joined Lt. Gov. John Fetterman Thursday as Fetterman announced he will be launching a statewide listening tour to hear from Pennsylvanians about the possibility of legalizing recreational marijuana.
  17. If this chart turns out to be accurate it makes the case for some form of realignment. Picture/thousand words. Data: United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs; Chart: Naema Ahmed/Axios
  18. I started this thread because for reasons unclear to me, my inbox has had a lot of other cannabis related news items this week. Then 12 hours after I started the thread, this shows up in my inbox. Is someone sending me a message.........
  19. This is a double posting of a long piece. The relevant except for this thread is below. Wine Glass: Form, Function, & Fragilty
  20. Adding this just to bolster the record. Like the shattered myth piece, it too has its deficiencies, just different ones. The Wine Glass: Form, Function, & Fragility
  21. Now that "Our Fearless Leader" (via the 2018 farm bill) has legalized the commercial production of Hemp, previously only allowed for research purposes, I'd like to get ahead of the curve and start a thread on all matters Cannabis. First, and most importantly is, if/when will the feds follow the states and Canada and legalize? I've seen speculation that Donny T might propose it as part of a reelection campaign. I don't buy that. In recent years only three states have failed to act on some loosening of their restrictions. Elements of Big Pharma and Big Alcohol are chomping at the bit to get going by investing substantial amounts in the Canadian players both private and public. They are apparently also heavily lobbying the feds for legalization. Some wine producers are also fearful of legalization. I'd welcome thoughts big and small, broad and narrow.
