  1. Definitely take Galileo off of your list and use their summer early week special instead. The entire is half off. Ten Penh usually has most if not all of their menu available and you can never go wrong with Chef Powers at Corduroy.
  2. I finally made it to Tallulah last week and it was definitely worth the schlep. Although I expected the Amuse Yourself to be the highlight of the meal I was blown away by the appetizers and main. When you go you must have the Foie Gras in a cola sauce. I know, coke and Foie? Who would have thought that the sweet cola reduction could enhance the two perfectly cooked pieces of Foie Gras. The pickled cabbaged added a nice subtle contrast to the richness of the Foie and sweetness of the sauce. The other standout appetizer was the crab cake. It consisted mainly of huge lumps of crabs with just enough filler to hold it together. I found it a bit under seasoned for my taste but then again my taste buds react funny when they find crab and no Old Bay. This is a damn good crab cake. It is served with a cabbage slaw that was delicious. Light, just a touch of creaminess with cumin (I think) tying the whole dish together. And then there were the scallops. I was informed before going that I was to order the scallops in vanilla sauce. Frankly, you put vanilla and anything together and I will give it a try. Who knew that vanilla could bring out the depth of flavor in a scallop. The vanilla sauce was creamy but not sweet, nor overpowering. Instead it played nicely in the background, highlighting all that a scallop could be. My dining companion is a bit of a cappuccino snob. She only drinks premium coffee, expects perfect foam, blah blah blah. Frankly, she was blown away by Tallulah's cappuccino. As she put it "This is a cappuccino worth crossing the river for"
  3. The first official meeting of the DonRockwell.com chapter of the Dead Yeast Society is going to meet on Wednesday the 27th at 7:00pm at Tallulah. There is room for 13 people. The tasting will include a variety of wines from the same grape, donated by Talullah. The purpose is for education, not showing off your palate or nose, so all levels of oenophiles are welcome. I promise you will know more than I do A selection of main courses that go nicely with the wine will be available for purchase and enjoyed during the tasting. If you would like to join us or have any questions please contact me via PM or email.
  4. I think Bill has the right attitude. We are getting a very nice deal. They (and by they I do not mean Chef) are aware of the board and do read it although I do not know how often. They do know we are a dinner group from a local food message board and we will be reporting back on the meal. As for influential, well, at least we are in our own world I do know that some local chefs read check in on what we think but I am not sure how much actual influence we have in many places. Any chefs/restaurateurs care to comment? Nope! Just shoot me a PM if anyone wants to join us.
  5. Amazon often has really good deals that they don't advertise. Check out the Today's Deals and the Outlet section. Sur le Table, oddly enough, also has 1/2 price deals from time to time.
  6. I made out quite nicely in the kitchen department for my birthday. Granted it was a big one but I still did better than I expected. I came out with my first Le Cruset, Cuisinart and a dozen Lenox champagne flutes. Now if I only had reason to use them all at once
  7. Shhhhhh, no one's supposed to know so we will all play nice while he's away
  8. Post of the week award and it's only Monday Micheal, for the good of the people I am willing to make the sacrifice and eat all the deviled eggs that remain. I cannot promise that the men and children will not be harmed in the process though.
  9. First and foremost, my thanks to Galileo for being so fantastic and helping with the organization of the dinner. We have a 6:30 reservation on Sunday the 24th. No, we don't each have to bring our own email. They have it in our reservation. I did not have to put down the $25 a head reservation insurance that you need to do on opentable so that is no longer a problem. We may end up with a private room (woo hoo) but at the very least we will be seated at tables near each other. There is still room for more if anyone would like to join us. Just let me know.
  10. Nice and juicy, I made a mess at lunch today. Despite it being early in the season I had two amazing ears of corn from New Morning for dinner last night. Sweet and full of flavor. I picked up a bunch of baby carrotts with the greens on from Sunnyside and brought them into school today. Most of my kids have never seen carrott greens, let alone a real baby carrott (that didn't come out of a bag). We had a great time pretending to be Bugs Bunny, until it got annoying and we made them eat the carrotts Really good carrotts though.
  11. This is the list I have so far. If I missed you please let me know ASAP laniloa bilrus+1 hm212 dcfoodie+1 funjohnny +1 mdt jacques crackers+1 walrus+1 crescentfresh+1 jpw+1
  12. Last chance if you want to join us on the 24th! Please let me know by this afternoon if you are joining us. I would like to make the reservation as soon as possible. Thanks
  13. Yeah, it took a lot of convincing Corned beef hash with poached eggs and rye toast One damn fine bloody mary
  14. Always!!!! Everyone is always welcome, with or without posting that you are joining in. We really do need to come up with a secret handshake or password
  15. We have a group going Sunday the 24th. If anyone wants to join us send me a PM and I will add you to the list
  16. It's in the shopping center across from Bruce's Variety at the corner of Bradley Blvd. and Arlington.
  17. On behalf of the Nats fans out there, your membership has been revoked
  18. I completely agree, they start making the natto roll when I walk in I also go there for fish when I pretend I know how to make sushi at home. (For those of you who were in Bethesda 8 or so years ago this is the guy who had the sushi stand in Cameron's seafood market on Bethesda Ave.) But as far as I know, Daruma is the only place around that serves this kind of food. I would love to be wrong on this one. Shogun, they are definitely open on Saturday and I am pretty sure they are open on Sunday. The lunch counter is open until 3:30 or 4.
  19. I have an Open Table question. I am making a reservation but am not sure that one of the people will be able to join me. Will Galileo charge me for that person even though I am keeping the reservation?
  20. Given that it is summer and we should take advantage of the weather a group of us decided that it would be nice to do a different sort of Happy Hour. We thought that going to see The Wizard of Oz at Wolf Trap might be a nice, family friendly change of pace. There is something about sitting out under the stars, eating good food and of course drinking good wine while watching a classic movie accompanied by the National Symphony Orchestra that sounds like a good way to end the week. The performance is Friday, July 29th at 8:30. If you would like to join us drop me an email and buy some tickets. We can coordinate food and wine later.
  21. I have a thing for their salsa and chips. On a hot day, with a cold beer and good company it's not a bad way to spend an hour. The camarones diablo 'aint to bad either. I worked at the old Bethesda location as a hostess about 12 years ago (for two weeks) and it was amazing how quickly one masters the art of sneaking chips and salsa during a long shift.
  22. On behalf of those of us whose job does not allow much surfing during the day let alone time to read Tom's chat, but check in periodically with the board, would someone mind quoting the post from Tom's chat that you discuss (assuming that isn't a copyright violation)? It would make following the conversation so much easier. We would greatly appreciate it
