  1. My daughters are in college but I still buy them Jip and Janneke (Dutch children's book characters who are not nearly as well behaved as Dick and Jane) items at the HEMA. It is somewhat like a Target but less expensive and more colorful.

This had been a very common activity among some Amish friends of my family, opening their homes to tourists for a traditional seven sweets/seven sours meal that also let you experience a few hours of PA Dutch and the Amish experience generally. That is until one family feeling jealous or slighted or something (there was much gossip in their particular Amish community at that time), reported the others to the PA health authorities who, backed by the PA restaurant association, then ruined the fun by requiring our friends to operate as a restaurant with all the certifications, inspections, etc. Some families still offer these dinners which are often grouped with tours or stays at BandBs, but our friends no longer do it.
  3. My given name is Elizabeth but as a child everyone called me Beth.While nothing wrong with that,,I never understood why my parents gave me a name they never used for me. Finally in grad school i made the transition to being known as Elizabeth. It is a stark divide in my life and a clear indication of when someone met me. Elizabeth has so many nickname possibilities and the one I always detested was Liz (at my local Starbucks, baristas know not to make that assumption).In the mid-late 1980's, some of the economists at my agency (it took us a long time to hire what are now known as IT staff) were setting up the Wang system, and knowing I detested being called Liz, humorously gave me the screen name "Lizzie" and as many above have experienced, it has stuck for many years as a screen name/login etc.
  4. Although I thought I lived in Arlington, VA, this suggests that my daughter and I live in Bhutan but spend some time each week in Japan. I know Americans are processed and fast food heavy in their diets, but is that photo really an accurate representation of what people in the US eat? I clearly live in a healthy food bubble.
  5. Many years ago Sony Corp. sued a little Filipino restaurant in Baltimore named "Sony's", which was the owner's name. Sony asked for nearly $3million in damages. The woman fought it as long as she could but eventually changed the name and soon after went out of business.

  7. Seriously - my daughter's school is looking for an Elvis impersonator for the afterprom party. I was able to help with the drag queen request but not the Elvis one. If you have ever been to an event with "Elvis" and thought it was a good show, let me know! On a side note, many years ago, I was flying through Atlanta on an anniversary weekend of Elvis' birthday (or death) and the terminal was FILLED with Elvis impersonators and those just dressed in his style, on their way to Memphis. Most were from Europe. Quite a sight.
  8. it looks like it could be a waffle under that cheese (or whatever) and the sauce plating is similar, but you are correct about the cone. I just happened to be viewing the page trying to figure out how to upload an image so threw in the quick guess.
  9. Lunched here yesterday. I agree with the reviews above - the noodles are so good. Two had the vegan option, one colleague had the shio with pork and I had the shoyu ramen (also with pork.) To quote one colleague, "I am so full and know I should stop but I just can't." The broths were delicious, the soft boiled eggs two of us had were a bit over soft-boiled but still a great addition, and those noodles were like nothing I had ever had in DC. We arrived around 12:15 and were seated within minutes. I think we were just fortunate but most parties seemed to be seated fairly quickly. Service was gracious (fork provided to one in our party without question or smirk) and the menu explained very clearly.
  10. Referencing a few earlier posts, I am also from PA Dutch country and sweet bologna and cream cheese was a frequent treat. I liked to layer and stack and then slice into little pie slices. And like bookluvingbabe, very occasionallyfound a miracle whip on wonder bread sandwich as a treat in my lunchbox. No microwave popcorn allowed in my house - but both my daughters now how to make real popcorn with oil and kernels. I find it hard to believe so many people on this website eat the microwave stuff. The smell is just too much.

I had a very nice Sunday brunch a few weeks ago, with a savory bread pudding and side salad, and a blackberry sangria, and lingered with no ill will from the staff while listening to my Coursera physics course videos. I also like the French press coffee they serve but don't know what brand it is. I had started at Northside but left since no tables were available inside or out, and ended up quite happy with the change.
  12. We eat at BUbby's whenever we are in NYC for hearings at a nearby court. It is affordable on our government per diem and the food while not trendy or necessarily spectacular, is always quite good.
  13. Harris Teeter did not have any - did not even look sold out, just looked empty.
  14. If anyone has seen dry ice on their morning travels, please post where. Extra points for Arlington, McLean or northwest DC.
  15. Hershey Park Hershey Park is also fun to visit when it is open for its winter Candylane. It is really busy Thanksgiving weekend but other days are not usually that bad. It can be cold and the entire park is not open, but nearly all the rides that are open are targeted for younger children.

I vote a better place (and much better coffee) as I will be wasting a small amount of gas (as I try to coast as much as possible in my hybrid) this afternoon to drive from DC to Northside or Bayou to meet a friend for coffee. As for cheese, i like some of the vendors at the Arlington and other farmer's markets, but can never remember the names. Not a huge range of product, but friendly, knowledgeable vendors. I would guess not permanaent enough to add farmer's market favorites to the map?

While I wish Cause the best success (and can recommend a great community center in Shaw that they might want to look at), is it really necessary to disparage other restaurant owners who you accuse of not giving back to the community. Maybe many of us do not know who you are referring to when you post these remarks, and thus read your words as a slap at any owners other than yourselves? I am involved with a locally owned restaurant and we do give back A LOT to our DC neighborhood, but we perhaps do not feel the need to publicize this at every effort, nor do we share the burden to show our books to the general public. Your effort is distinct of course, and the path you are on is admirable. But don't alienate potential customers before you even open by suggesting that your "Cause" makes you better than the owners of other local restaurants. We all still have to sell enough food and drink to pay the bills first.
  19. per diem for meals et al is $158, but my hotel is under the $340 allowed so i have a bit of wiggle room. Breakfast is included at the hotel which brings down the per diem a bit.
  20. Cannot believe no posts on Geneva - any recommendations for not outrageously priced restaurants as I will be traveling on the federal per diem. I am trying to be a good steward of tax payer $$$$.
  21. Colombia - no u, 2 o's. Many years ago, I spent my junior year in college there. Probably one of the more crazy semester abroad options in the early 1980's. I don't have restaurant recs, but make sure to try arepas de choclo. Sweet corn arepas - I have never had anything like them in the states. Ajiaco and sancocho are traditional stews, combining yuca, platanos, chicken, and potatoes. Do not be surprised to find a chicken paw in there. Also, drink aguardiente with tropical fruit chasers, but cautiously.
  22. Eater DC has an article about Spike Medelsohn repping an acid reflux drug (for some reason it will not link for me). Will this be the new trend - what diseases/afflications do you think are next in line for other chefs to divulge and get paid to do so? I wonder if your tab at his restaurants will now come with a sample of Dexilant instead of a piece of candy or something? (Full disclosure in that I have never eaten at one of his restaurants so I do not know whether you are gifted with anything other than the bill.)
  23. Another on on Lee Highway in Arlington is Caribbean Grill. Black beans, yuca, plantains, rice, etc. Check that the beans do not have meat in them, though. Cash only. There is a another similar place across from Pupatella, as well as Crisp and Juicy down a bit further on Lee Highway.
