  1. Thanks for the recs. Went to carribean feast yesterday evening. The place was really good. Definitely deserves a return trip. We had jerk chicken with sweet potatos and spinich and oxtail with collards and rice and peas. All were good. The jerk chicken was really good and sweet potato was excellent. Soup
  2. Looking for a good carribean/jamaican place. Good rice and peas, jerk, and oxtails. Am willing to drive to MD. Thanks in advance. Soup
  3. I grilled fish last night and as I was explaining different parts to my kids, they asked "what is your favorite part"? I heard numerous times from cook's tour and no reservations, Anthony Bourdain talk about the collars or the cheeks. Those are good but I think the best part of any fish is the belly flap, the soft fatty underside of any fish tends to have more fat and flavor and cannot be beat for tenderness. To me (not counting flat fish), the belly area beats cheeks and collars hands down.
  4. I don't know the name of red spicy one, what the item in the cup is Mul kimchi (water kimchi) and Muk is the jello like substance with soy dressing.
  5. I was there on tuesday this week and had the Hae Jang gook (yae chun version is better by the way) but the version @ GMS is good. I added about a quarter of the bowl of scallions. I don't think they care that much. Had Soon Dae gook over the weekend @ GMS and again it was solid. So far the best soup I've had at GMS but you have to like a lot of different parts of a pig. Soup
  6. Agreed. Not season yet. They always seem prime around easter but certainly got the craving for a good boil. The problem is that it hard to find around here even in season. I'm not looking for frozen, thank you for the suggestions though. I'm looking for a resturant that serves boiled crawfish. If not would be glad with place that will sell a big sack of live ones. Picnic, what a great idea!!!
  7. i've been craving crawfish since I put the feed bag on last may. The season is right around the corner and I still have not found anywhere around the Wash/Balt. area that serves them. I'd appreciate any heads up on a place. Also does anyone know a dist. that will sell them by the sack?
  8. Was there on sat. with my son He got the dumplings (cigar shape fried one), we split the spicy dumplings and I had the spicy beef and tendon noodle soup. The soup was the best by far. My son now has a new favorite dish at A&J. I think we might do another lunch there this weekend. BTW, is there soup dumplings in at A&J. I wouldn't have guessed but I saw couple of tables that looked like soup dumplings and they were eating it like you would a soup dumpling.
  9. Just joined BJ after being a costco member for over 10 years. Like to here which is better. I joined BJ after a visit today because they had better variety, better store hours and could use my credit card. Not sure if their stuff or prices will be better than Costco.
  10. When someone mentions Hotdogs/half smokes, my minds turns to 3 places, vienna inn, Ben's and BW. Still like BW and vienna inn. breakfast sandwiches at BW isn't bad either.
  11. I hate to see another Annandale institution go. We had become fans of this place not because they served world class ribs (ribs were good) but because it was a neighborhood place. Nice waitstaff and no pretension. It will be missed. I just hope the korean place that goes in is good. I hope it is not another generic korean BBQ place with 20 page menu.
  12. The noodle soup dishes are very substatial and very good. My favorite is the one you had (1103). It does beg the question, which is the best noodle soup dish (e.g., pho, chinese egg noodle soup or rice noodle soup, jampong, udon) and the resturant that serves it in the DC area?
  13. I love hotdogs. My favorites are natural casing dogs by hebrew national, nathans, thumans, shofar, etc. Has anyone found a place that sells good natural casing dogs in NOVA area? I once found Usingers being sold at TJs but have never seen it again. Pretty good dogs can be had at the deli counter at wegman's but I refuse to pay $6 per pound for a hotdog. Second question is why so many skinless dogs by nathans and hebrew national at local groceries but you cannot find the natural casing version?
  14. Not rice but jook (rice gruel comes out nice).
  15. Was at Gamasot today. My first time. Based on such strong recommendations on this board, I had high hopes (even with the fact that soluntang is one of my least favorite korean soups). I love the layout of the resturant. I like the open kitchen and korean tables on wooden floors. I wish more places would do this. The place was clean and bright. Didn't even mind the TV (wasn't loud). I got the house specialty, Solung Tang. The soup was very plain (that is how it is suppose to be) and good. The noodles were not over done and there was a lot of meat. Meat had no flavor and I ended just removing it from the soup. Salt and diced scallions were provided on the table so you could season as needed. Panchan was good, nothing extraordinary. The key banchan to any soluntang place is the kimchi and it was really good. They first brought it in a large clay both then cut the two type of kimchi in fronth of you. When the kimchi juice and kimchi was added to the milky broth it was really good. Would I go back? absolutely. I'd like to order some of their other soup dishes. All around a very good place.
  16. put up garbi jhim (braised short ribs with root veggies) before I left this morning in the slow cooker. Will be ready come dinner time.
  17. I buy most of my beans and lentils at El grande (they have a very good hispanic bean section and indian/middle eastern bean section). Stuff I have currently in pantry are fava, red kidney, navy, black, lima, black eye peas, chick peas and bunch of lentils. My favorite are the lentils (more than beans). Much easier and faster to cook and really good in soups and as indian Dal. However, if I had to pick a bean, right now it is lima beans. Had lima beans and brown rice last night. Beans cooked very simply in chicken stock with onion, garlic and blk pepper. Was really good and creamy. I am still looking for a really good simple blk bean soup recipe if anyone has one. BTW, the wife used about a pound of the blk beans when cooking pie crust. Can I use those beans or is it a wasted effort since these have been "roasted" in the oven. Soup
  18. I just got a knock at the door and it was a guy selling meat door to door. I get these folks about 2x per year. I just have no confidenance in the product but was curious. Anyone every buy from these folks that sell meat door to door. Soup
  19. Am relatively new to the board. Very interested in Dim Sum. How does the Dim Sum Group work?
  20. This is probably the 3rd best place in chinatown for chinese food (which isn't saying much). I know many folks are very high on this place but I don't see it. The handmade noodles are the best dish they serve. However, they can be doughy and without much elasticity. However, it is for the most part solid noodle. The issue is that they take good noodle and distroy it with really poor soup. It has no flavor or body. As for the stuff in the steam tables, don't bother. Roast pig, duck and pork are all good. The soup dumplings are good to but can be inconsistant. Soup BTW, 1st and second goes to chinaboy and full kee (not in that order).
  21. That is what had origionally thought but the cut look way to small compared to a prime rim without the rib. The cross section was no where near the size of the prime rib but more like the size of a tenderloin.
  22. was at El Grande this morning. Found Hanger steaks for $3.20/lb. BTW, does anyone know what part of the beef does Rib eye com from? I saw rib eye primal today at El Grande for $3/lb and I expected to see bones attached to it but it look more like a large tenderloin. Any insight would be appreciate.
  23. I've tried this several times using still cut oatmeal with some raisins thrown in (ala alton brown) it every time it came out all slimy (it this just that way oat meal is?).
  24. To me this soup on new years morning is one of the great korean food traditions. Made the Mandoo this afternoon. I just cannot get up early enough in the morning to make mandoo anymore. Sleeping in has become almost as good of a tradition.
