  1. went to a charity event on Saturday called Hungry for Music? They do a fund raiser every year to raise $ for music instructions and instruments for dissadvantage youth. The fund raiser is a crawfish boil. The event had a lot of great music and more crawfish, potato, corn and beer than you could shake a stick at. Just a fantasic event for a good cause. I also found it one of the best way to spend an afternoon. For folks interested, their is another boil put on by LSU alumni association two weekends from now. It is without a doubt, the largest boil around DC. I think they are about 100 tickets left still. 1500 people and 15,000lbs of crawfish. It is an amazing event. www.dccrawfish.com
  2. Well, I think it's season for soft shell crabs. I would appreciate a heads up for any good sources for these. Thanks in advance. Soup
  3. Went to super H on Sunday just to pick up a few things but the good prices on seafood caught my eye. 99cent/lb on female crabs. Bought a dozen for maybe $4. They were kind of small but lively. Not sure I'd receommend. But the lobsters were great. Really fresh. They were trashing a lot. $5.99/lb. I bought 5 lobster each just over a pound. I'd highly recommend the lobsters. Soup
  4. Didn't make it this weekend as hope. I know you tried 4 carts but how many carts in total where there and what were some of the other offerings?
  5. I have given up on most retail places in my yearly sources for decent strawberries (stuff I remember eating when I was a kid, or the berries I've had on a NJ strawberry farm or stuff I had overseas). I think it is the variety that we grow in this country. Never-the-less, spring brings new hope and I'm looking for a farm (Pick your own) for some great strawberries. If you know of any, I would appreciate a heads up. Soup
  6. This looks amazing. Will try to go this weekend.
  7. Gamasot is a solid place but SLT has never been a favorite of of mine. Other soups are solid but you can find better examples else where. If out in Chantilly, try a place called Go Yang Jip by Dullas expo center. Hole in the was but serves some of the best korean soup around. BTW, this place also serves Soon Dae Gook with just the Soon Dae (none of the other bits) in addition to the regular Soon Dae gook with all the other stuff (which I love) in it.
  8. I buy a lot of fruit and veggies at the asians stores mentioned in the thread. It is true that variety, price and turnover are all good but the freshness on certain items are questionable. Stuff I have to watch consistantly are grapes, berries and peppers. My brother in law calls them "lot B". not sure if that is a technical/industry trade term but no matter the turn over, they are starting (IN SOME Products only) with product that is not as fresh off the vine as some of the other stores. For the variety and price on produce local asians store can not be beat. Just careful on what you buy and use them quickly.
  9. Went for lunch today. IMO willards is on the top 5 for BBQ around DC area, not necessarily the hardest to do but it still has solid Q with consistant sides. I go once a month and alway get Brisket. Today, once again order brisket. However, it was different. Had a nice mild smoke flavor and it was incredibably juicy, soft and beefy. I have eaten at willard's a lot and their brisk is good but never been great. Today, it was great. Was it a one time thing or have they step it up a notch or two. I hope the latter but I'll see in a few week. I kid you not. It was as good as the stuff I've had in TX and for the first time at willard's I did not use their sauce. I'm still thinking about that brisket. YUM!!! Soup
  10. Found this yesterday. I will being going. It sounds like a good cause and I will get my crawfish fix (hopefully), two birds with one stone. I've not been to previous boils put on by this org. so I don't know what to expect. $35/person, kids under 12 free. http://hungryformusic.org/hfm/ Soup
  11. Use to find them about a year ago in every grocery. I've look and cannot find them around in NOVA grocery stores. Would appreciate a heads up if you know where I can score some.
  12. Went and answered the question myself this weekend. The place is big, clean and pretty nice. Has sort of a warehouse feel to it. Large selection of everything and clearly they are not yet finished building it out. I do like the wide isles and the large selection of stuff beyond asian foods (e.g., indian selection is really good and spanish stuff is good as well). Everything is compariable to super H in fairfax but the seafood selection althrough great (is not as big as great wall). The veggies and fruits were excellent.
  13. I really like the banchan at this place. The stews and soups are solid bets but my favorite are the grilled or braised fish. I have braised blue fish in spicy sauce (have no idea what the name for it in korean is) at it is great. Soup
  14. Has anyone been out to the new Lotte in Chantilly @ rt 50 and sully (close to that intersection)? supposedly its pretty big.
  15. There was a $20 tuesday that Grover did (it was great). Choong Hwa Won that $4 cha chang mein about a week ago. Not sure if the deal is still good.
  16. Got half a bushel of oysters today from father and son seafood. Located in Lorton VA. $45 for about 9 dozen. Mid size oysters. The owners said they were local but I didn't press him on who his supplier was. The oysters were faily clean, nice and briny and all relatively fresh. Made very quick work the them watching B-ball. Pretty good deal for the number of oysters I got. I think I will make another trip next week. Soup
  17. Thank you Grover for planning. Over all, thumbs up experience. My favorite was the hot and sweet pork belly. Also enjoyed the steamed egg. Excellent. The other items were also solid but the standout was the pork belly. Reminds me of places in Seoul but I could do without the loud music. Very much enjoyed the company. I would go back to this place. Look forward to next $20 tuesday (BTW, anyone tried the HanGang resturant or the new tofu place next to the Giant in annandale)?
  18. Some of the larger korean places has private rooms. Its been a long time since I used them but generally they don't charge if I remember correctly. Hee Been Sorak Garden Han song Oak to name a few.
  19. I missed a lot of festivals (food and ethic oriented) last year and am determined to correct that error this year. Any recommendation for "not to be missed" festival in the area? Soup
  20. As long as work doesn't change my plans I am in for Honey pig. Soup
  21. I think I'm in for HK palace next week. Soup
  22. speaking of gauging, I flew the coup this week and went to orlando. Needed some warm weather and didn't want to be around for the crowds. You want to talk gauging, Mickey's got it down to a science.
