  1. Too bring it back...my kingdom for great korean BBQ. Charcoal fire, quality meat (BEEF), great banchan.
  2. The place is closed. :-(. Really like the quality of the meat and the use of the charcoal. Annandale has a lot of korean, most are very solid but it still lacks a great BBQ place (like the places in LA) , quality meat, charcoal, great banchan. Chung Dai Kam wasn't exactly it but it was closer. I'm hoping we get a great korean BBQ place soon. Not to get off topic but I had budea chigea for lunch today. Litteral transaltion is "army stew". there are resturants dedicated to this "hybrid" dish in seoul but rarely see in around DC. It was pretty good and interesting. Soup
  3. To target and pile on chains can be easy. But for me Famous Dave's (FD) is pretty good. It is one of the better joint around DC. I frequent both the potomac mills and chantilly location and chantilly is a bit more consistant. Right now this is my fav. bbq place. It also happens to be great value. Over took Willards after the last 2 bad meals at willards. Am going to try to make it out to the pit stop over the next 2 or so. Soup
  4. surprised about the berries. seems like a cold spring. Were the berries good? Been calling around to farms for pick your own but nothing is open yet for strawberries.
  5. I love strawberries. I don't mean the peices of card board they sell in groceries or many farm stand (which I believed to be repackaged store straw berries), I mean real berries that are small sweet and test like strawberries I remember from childhood. (BTW in my adult like I came across good strawberries only once: in centeral NJ where I lived next to a strawberry field one year. Next year the put up track housing). So this year in an effort to introduce my kids to great berries, I'm trying to find a you-pick place with good variety of strawberries. I figure I would have the best luck going straigh to the source. BTW, we go to Butlers every year for blue, black and rasberries. Haven't done strawberries there. Do they have different varieties? Would appreciate your thoughts on a good strawberry you pick farm. Soup
  6. Can you share the price? I'm interested. BTW, Do we get the whole fish for is it fileted? Soup
  7. I love Bo's. never miss a chance to get some when I'm in the chapel hill area. However, I think the best fast food FC is popeyes, still. Bo's is close. I haven't seen a churche's in DC in 20 years and that use to be my fav. Has anyone trie pollo camparo in bailey's Xroad?
  8. For her bday wish, she wants a great lunch somewhere in NOVA or DC. She mentioned 2941. I just called and they have no prefix menu for lunch. I thought they did? Anyone know a good place with nice suroundings where we can get a very nice lesurily meal? Soup
  9. Have been going to Mu kee for years. The food is solid. Noodle soups and roast meats are always solid. About the same level as mark's but not as good as full kee (when to full key near bailey's this saturday and the roast meats were really good). Tried the egg plant with salt fish and chicken. Fish seem like sardines more for flavor, you don't even really see it. I think it is the best dish on the menu. All around solid place. Any one been to china star in fairfax lately. I have a real craving for hot and spicy food. Soup
  10. Wow the last review on this place was over 3 years ago. Has any one been lately for happy hour? Doesn't it offer anything else than $1 oysters? Am looking to get my oyster fix and was considering happy hours at the following: Hank's in alexandria Old Ebitt's Grill Black Salt Would appreciate anything input.
  11. went to Gom Tang E for the first time this week and then second... I'm not a fan of solung tang/gom tang. I actually don't know what the difference is but the I've always found the milking white soup pretty bland and un-exciting (I know you're suppose to add stuff to make it tasty). However, my parents wanted to go, yaechon had a 45 minute wait on Saturday night so I begrudingly agreed. We went to the one in Annandale. you walk in you see pretty sparse decoration but the water wheel is nice. The thing that catches your eyes are the two hot tub size culdrons on soup behind a big glass case. You can see large hunks of something swimming in milking white broth. We all order sulung tang. I got the combination. When it arrived, I added a ton of scallon, salt, pepper and the all important kimchi juice. The kimchi is already in a container in the table and you serve yourself. two types of kimchi, no other bachan to speak of. I tasted my soup and Hello, the stuff rocked. It had flavor and great mouth feel and the noodles in the soup were just the right texture. This is great soup. In addition, they gave me free refees on noodles and soup (not sure if this was standard policy) but I easily ate one and half bowls. The best parts were all the ofals in it. It had intestines, liver, tendons, stomach, and other parts that I didn't recognize. It also had meat in it but I found the ofals really tasty and the textures were just outrageious. For 3 people I paid less then $30 with tip. Hard to find a better bargain. 2 days later, I kept thinking about the meal and had the cravings. So I went back on friday for quick early lunch. Went in around 11:30. Talk to the waitress and found out that during lunch the prices are just rediculous cheap. For seniors is was $4 and for me $5. I thought they might skimp on the meat and ofals but they did not. Had a great meal but I did smell like scallions for rest of the work day because I again put a lot of scallions into the soup. I would recommend this place. I wonder if the gom tang e in centreville is the same? Soup
  12. Would recommend china star in fair city mall. Very good chinese food if you order off the chinese menu.
  13. Saw this placed on Triple D. Guy was going off on the lamb and french toast. His rants have not convince me to go back since my last visit 7 years ago.
  14. Soup

    Bacon

who is bruce and what is the westover bacon program?
  15. Played hookie and spent the afternoon with the wife on at the outside bar at coastal flats. mets some nice folks, the bartendar rocked. The food was good, drinks were great and being outside was even better. There has got to be a better place with an outside patio then one that sits in a middle of the parking lot, however...
  16. China star is one of my fav chinese place in the area. The tofu, duck, rabbit off the chinese menu is excellent. However the fish with mustard green and fried eggplant is by far my favorite. You should give the place another try with the chinese menu.
  17. Am in NOVA (closer to fairfax). Having lunch with the wife and it is suppose to be fantastic weather. We like a place where we can sit out side hand have a great leasurely meal/drinks for lunch. Suggestions for places with outdoor seating option. Fairfax area is best but will drive a bit as well. Soup
  18. chicken stock going right now in a slow cooker. It will be done in the morning and destined for Jambalaya tomorrow night. Also just finished Napa cabbage Miso Soup. It is a great vegitarian soup.
  19. Ok. I've had it with sub par bacon. I've gotten bacon from costco, BJs, safeway, giant, etc. They all have issues. Mostly too much Fat and the quality is not all that great. Is there somewhere where I can get decent bacon (i'd prefer not to do mail order)?
  20. If you get advanterous and want to tweak the recipe a bit, try going with raw oysters (gul jut) instead of the pickled shrimp (sawoo jut). I love oyster kimchi. Although I am not an expert kimchi maker, I've made it enough times to have some opinions. Ingredients matter (I know it is an obivous point). Pick really heavy napa cabbage. For the fish sauce, I actually like the 3 crabs version vs. the korean products. As for the pepper flakes you will see bunch of different grinds. Don't get the fine grind. I was actually surprised that this mattered but it does (don't know why). I get a medium/course. Note, most koreans want their pepper flakes that was made in korea vs. china. Most koreans seemed to believe that chinese product has a lot of peticide (not sure that's true). On the kochugaru (pepper flakes), my parent claim that if imparts a redish color on your cutting board, it has pigments added. Anyone know it its true. They actually gone to making their own kochugaru and let me say it looks nothing like the store bought. Not as red, more hot and kimchi is less red then the stuff you probably have seen. Not sure I taste the difference but it doesn't leave red coloring on my cutting board when I cut the kimchi. I've tried different brands from H mart and they all leave a redish stain on my cutting board. Soup BTW, if you ever want to buy kimchi, the best version is at the rainbow catering next to the paris bakery in annandale. Cost a bit more but every single korean we serve it to says exactly the same thing.
  21. Was thinking about taking the wife out to Shamshimery this friday night. It has by far the best rice in town. The rice is just amazing and nothing around DC even comes close. The kabobs are really good (between moby and S too close to call on kabob. Frankly their achilles heel is the bread. What I wouldn't give for decent bread at S. However, as the wife says, with the rice this good do you need bread? (risotto with a side order of spagetti anyone?)
  22. Went to the Great Wall (GW) yesterday. Had forgotten that it is the Lunar new year this week. The place was so packed I really had a difficult time moving around let along shopping. Although not a new year purchase, I got rice and 3 from their food "court". I am continually underwelmed by their food court. The food at the annandale place and certainly at maxim in Rockville is way better. Will go back for some duck and pig. These will be good sides to the Dduk Guk (rice cake soup) which is the traditional lunar new year dish in korean culture.
  23. How did I miss this and I am on groupon. I'm assuming this is done since I cannot see it on groupon.
