  1. You and I may be the only one who doesn't think much of about the food at the great wall food counter. Last time I got it, the food had this strange matallic taste and I could not eat it. I will never go back. Happy go market food counter has better food but maxim is better. Have you done the hot pot thing at Uncle Liu's yet?
  2. I keep wishing for a better dim sum place in NOVA then MDH. Its one of those places, where I go because its the best of the bunch but that isn't saying a whole lot and I don't want to make the trek to gaithersburg or HEB. Why can't NOVA produce and support a really good dimsum place?
  3. My appologies but we are unable to attend due to family matters. Sorry for any incovienance. Woup
  4. Its may in DC. My thoughts turn to soft shell crabs. Anyone see them anywhere.
  5. Any interest on Uncle Liu's Hot Pot in merrifield va for tuesday or Thursday night thing. The specific date not yet determine but being hot pot preferably before it get stinking hot. Soup
  6. To me beans and lental are the super food. Fortunately my kids love beans so we eat a lot of variety and the cooking tends to be very simple. few aromatics and salt and pepper. With good bread or rice, it is an amazing easy meal. we keep about 10 different varieties of beans and lentles in the pantry. Our favorite recipe is for black bean and is pretty simple. Soak bean overnight. In a heavy pot, saute garlic and onion with olive oil (I sometimes use bacon grease or duck fat), cook beans for about 1.5 hours with some bay leaves. I use water as the cooking liquid. I don't want them to fall apart. I'll mash a few to make it creamy but I want the shape a very slight bite feel to it. add salt at the end to taste - you don't need a lot. I also add some acid to brighten the flavor. To serve, ladle over rice and sprinkle endless options (raw onion work well, bacon, chives, etc). YUM!!!
  7. I'll bring black beans and rice. It will be vegan.
  8. I've been to many events at Fort Hunt Park where there were kegs o'plenty. Infact the I have an event the saturday before and saturday after the picnic and I know there will be many many kegs at each event.
  9. I think I can make this event. Right between two crawfish boils. Me and the family (wife and 2 kids 6 & 8). Don't know what I have bring but I will think about it. With all the port that we can expect perhaps black beans & rice.
  10. What a great idea!!! Is it on the 25th @ 1pm?
  11. It interesting that the lastest posting don't seem to address the main difference between Tony and other food celebs/shows. The main difference is the public personna that tony has fasioned for the past 10 years. I don't ever recall bobby flay, emeril or rachel ray every stating that they were outsiders not taken in a the shill of big corporations. Nor did they make fun of others who were out to cash in their celebrity. Tony has done that. However, I guess he has had a change of heart in his later years. .
  12. I've been a fan of bourdain for years. Kitchen conf. and cook's tour. I still think the TV show Cook's tour is one of the best food related shows of all time. I wish they would do reruns... As for no reservations, it can be good but somethings it just ok. I think as he gets a family and gets older, he seems to want to travel less so there's been more shows closer to home and more repackaged shows. I think in this season and last there have been show that weren't just that good. Perhpas its time that No Reservations had its run its course and he should let it go. As for last weeks episode, I was looking forward to it but it just wan't that good. Why did I need to see two people dancing on the ice? BTW, how much is he getting from Chase to flash the card on the various episode? I guess he is not a hotel shill (Singapore episode) but certainly tips his hat to Chase. Becomes harder to argue that you are the "bad boy of food" or the cool outsider when you're doing the same thing as other food celebs. Racheal ray just came closer to bourdain.
  13. How long does the oil last?
  14. I love fried chicken. At home I always pan fried because I just don't want to waste all the oil required for deep frying. As for the skin peeling off more on deep fried, it doesn't bother me at all. The real issue for me alway is (in either pan or deep fry), what do you do with all the oil. Seem very wasteful to throw it away. However, I have not figured out a good way to store and use again. Any suggestions?
  15. bought bunch of choice T-bone (wonder what the difference btwn Tbone and porterhouse is). Anyway it looked pretty good. Some marbeling and you coudn't beat the price ($5/lb).
  16. my favorite (don't know about the best) is actually served the the hot food bar at shopper (the one in Lorton). It is a non-sauced spicy dredge variety. A lot of wing fans will not call this buffalo wing as there is no sauce but like I said, it is my favorite. Would highly recommend it.
  17. glad to hear you like it. I love these and like you said, stragely addictive. of my top 5 chips, this is the only one that is nationally available and it is truly spicy. You will feel it. But the heat builds gradually. Soup
  18. Person named Ankash. Says he was the chef at Cafe Taj who started his own catering business.
  19. am throwing the wife a party with 40 of her friends. We are doing the catering route and have chosen an indian caterer. I was thinking of the following dishes.... Veggie Pakora/Samosa Bhindi Masala Baigan Bartha Dal Saag Paneer Chicken Tikka masala chicken tandoori Lamb vindaloo or Rogan Josh Naan Raita basmati rice As you can see my knowledge of indian is based on years of eating at indian buffets. the menu seems pedastrian even to me. I would appreciate ideas that would jazz this up without driving up the price too much. Any insights would be appreciated.
  20. BTW had laksa at cafe asia in Roslynn, I could not eat it. was awful. I should run down the street and just gotten a burger. Still looking for a great laksa. All but given up on ramen in DC but that is another thread....
  21. Yes we are talking about the same dish and yes a janpanese place sell it even though it is a malay dish. I seem to remember many korean places that sell janpanese food or is it the other way around?
  22. I love Doritos Habenaro. I think it is the best nationally available chip and certainly in my list of top 5. They have been off the shelf for over a year. I was in Safeway yesterday and low and behold there they were. I bough 5 bags. If you haven't tried one, I would highly recommend it. Soup
  23. Go have a couple of Bahn Mis and judge for yourself. They are certainly very reasonable price. I like DC bahn mi. In opinion, Bahn Mi's ROCK!!!
