  1. Well, here's what Tom Sietsema tweeted about Fabio's departure: "Food lovers, cross your fingers. Chef Fabio Trabocchi emails me that he’s 'Looking at more than one option and DC is one of them.'" (via Young & Hungry) Rob
  2. If you want to get the Rasika sauces at the Giant on Rockville Pike and Montrose Road, they are on the far endcap of the pasta/sauce/Italian aisle. Near the deli, if that helps. It took some looking to find them. Rob
  3. Pardon if I throw in a question, but this whole idea of freezing sounds great. So what's the best way to freeze and reheat many of these items? For example, I imagine rice and pasta might stick together after freezing. And as for reheating, do you just throw it in a microwave or a pan and let it go or would you do something like boiling in a bag?
  4. When I went to Austin on an internship in 2000, I discovered the joys of BBQ (despite visits to Ruby's and a nearby Rudy's). It was enough to take a self-designed BBQ tour with my dad a few years later. From my experience, Cooper's and Louis Mueller's are extraordinary while Black's was also notable. I don't think I'll be headed back to Austin anytime soon though, so if Hill Country is even decent I will welcome them with open arms. And if they are better than that, it'll be gravy.
  5. Admittedly, I didn't get out much in 2009 but the DR dinner at Radius Pizza was the highlight of my food year. Even though I ate at Komi for the first time in November, I was expecting a masterful meal from them while Chef Wiss' meal came out of left field and knocked me onto my keister. The pumpkin ravioli, the panzanella with apples, the fall pizza, and the fig and feta pizza were all wonderful and genuinely excited me. If I didn't live in Gaithersburg, I would go by Radius more often. Other highlights: Kindai tuna at Kaz Sushi Bistro Ginger salad at Burma Road A Thanksgiving feast at Vidalia My stepmom's cookies at Christmas Finding my old Boy Scout chili recipe on the Internet Getting my first All-Clad pan Rob
  6. Since I did not get enough signups, I am cancelling the outing. Thanks to everybody who signed on. Rob
  7. I am told that we need at least six people to sign on in order to be worth it. I have two definites and one possible. If anyone else is interested, please let me know by tomorrow at midnight (PM or post). If I don't have six by then, I will call it off.
  8. Is it really offensive to make an advance reservation in order to drive down to a restaurant and eat food prepared specifically for the occasion? If the chef is easily offended, perhaps so. I would think that Chef Chang would be happy to share true "ma la" cusine with us or at least refuse to do so before we arrive. On that premise, I am still soliciting participants. Please let me know by Wednesday, December 2nd. I will remind everybody before that time.
  9. Thanks TheMatt. I wanted to schedule this on a weekend so everybody can come. The final final date is December 5th. Mea culpa.
  10. Goodeats has volunteered to help us out with arranging the outing so I say we are go for launch on December the 3rd if that is satisfactory to all. Please PM me or post here if you want in. IMHO, we need at least four people to go. Rob
  11. Right now, I am looking for someone who speaks Mandarin. Hopefully I will within the next day or so. I would like to set the final date to December 3rd, if that works for everybody. The 4th would be fine as well. CORRECTION: Make that December the 5th. I wish to schedule it on a Saturday so everybody can come.
  12. Evidently, this trip will be futile unless we have a go-between who speaks Mandarin. This person would need to arrange a reservation and inform Chef Chang that we want food with the full "ma la" treatment. Otherwise we will get the boring Americanized dishes. If anyone can speak Mandarin and help out, that would be great; however, if no one volunteers by Friday, sadly I'm going to call off the trip. I don't see any other way to go.... Rob
  13. Sure, I'll drive. I can carry 4 people total (including me).
  14. Ladies and Gentlemen, I have been thinking about a road trip to visit Peter Chang's new joint Taste of China in Charlottesville. If I understand correctly, this is as close as he has been to the area in a long time so it is best to carpe diem while we have the chance. I would suggest next Sunday, November 22, as a potential date. After that I would suggest early December. Rob
  15. I think Zora was saying that glutamate exists naturally too. Now sometimes the artifical version of a substance can be problematic--for example, my mother was allergic to the artificial version of folic acid, which kept her from eating enriched foodstuffs--so maybe MSG is similar. Rob
