  1. I like the chili at Hamburger Hamlet (aka "The Hamlet"). It's got a nice balance between flavor and heat though I have never judged its culinary correctness....
  2. Which restaurants are doing Thanksgiving in 2009? I am currently evaluating my options this year and a trip out of town seems unlikely.
  3. I checked out the restaurant's Google Map link and three out of the four reviews are 5 stars. Sounds like I have a BBQ pilgrimage to make....
  4. The Rockwell $23 four-course dinner at Radius was amazing. Everything was great, from soup to mussels to salad to pasta to pizza to dessert. I will let others give out more detail, but I will point out the Kampacha squash soup and the fig and feta pizza. The soup, which had a little rosemary oil on top, was the opener and it knocked me for a loop. This tiny cup was very creamy and rich, and I savored every bit. It reminded me of Corduroy's fabulous squash soup (which had a hint of foie if I remember correctly). As for the fig and feta pizza, it definitely lived up to my expectations. It seems that Chef Wiss likes to juggle sweet, savory, and salty and this pizza blended all three to good effect. The only criticism I have is that three pizzas might have been too much. If we had gone with just the fig and fall pizzas that would have been more than enough. On the other hand, the trusty sausage pizza may have been there for people who don't the fancy art pizzas. Thus all came away satisfied. I know I did.
  5. Went to the Gaithersburg location last night and had a Alehouse BBQ Burger ($9) with a 60 Minute IPA. The burger was cooked medium rare (as requested) but was utterly tasteless. Hard to believe that bacon, cheddar, and loads of BBQ sauce would add up to nothing but it did. The IPA was good as usual.
  6. My brother and I went to the new location a while ago and they did have gelato. I imagine they do now.
  7. Cancel that. I didn't look at my calendar first <sigh>.
  8. So I stumbled on the website for this BBQ joint and I can't find any threads about it on DR. Anyone been to Black Hog?
  9. Went here tonight and enjoyed every minute of it. Appetizers: Chicken tikka and the lamb chops. The tikka had a nice flavor and a good kick in the back of the throat but in my mind the substantial lamb chops (2) stood out in terms of pure flavor. Entrees: The tandoori chicken and the bacalao curry (shimp in a sauce made with vinegar and chillies). Since I only had a taste of the tandoori chicken I can only say that it was strongly aromatic and with just enough heat to count. Quite nice. As for the shrimp, I was impressed with it--the sauce packed a punch but it was mellow enough to work with the shrimp instead of overwhelm it. Very balanced and very tasty. I ate every bit of the bacalao shrimp and tried to mop up every bit of the sauce with naan and rice. In short, I have found a new place to take my brother and my dad when they come into town. Yum cubed!
  10. I went to Bon Chon Chicken in Annendale a few weeks ago and the soy garlic flavor was very good, crispy crust and all. Had to wait 45 minutes tho. Next time I will phone ahead like I am supposed to....
  11. I dropped by last night and got the cafeteria-style meal--was quite pleased by a stewed beef dish (wow!) and a nice noodle dish with sausage and chicken. The rice was a little dry but I walked away with a great meal (plus lumpia) for $10. I am coming back to try the other dishes!
  12. Agreed. I went last Saturday and was very pleased. Believe it or not, I thought the Albacore toro was fierce competition for the Kindai.
  13. Two weeks ago (or so), I made enquiries about a reservation for 1 and was brushed off with "just show up," for what it's worth. Wish me luck.
  14. Hi there, I have often been tempted by Annandale's Korean scene, but I live in Gaithersburg right now and getting to Northern Virginia can be a pain at the best of times. So if I am planning to visit a few places in Annandale every week or so for a month, where should I go? Variety would be nice but not absolutely necessary! rob t.
  15. I am yet another $20 dinnergoer and here's a few thoughts: The appetizers had their ups and downs. The chili cheese toast was great, the chicken kathi roll was merely good, and I wasn't down with the taste and texture of vegetable cutless (perhaps because I am not initiated into the Holy Church of Beets). A majority of the entrees were quite good, especially the Vegetable Chorchori, the lamb (the highlight of the meal), and the mackerel. However, I was not a fan of the gratin - seemed too sweet. As usual, I can't comment on the desserts because I am incapable of saving room for them. Rob
  16. Could someone please locate Spice Xing using Rockvile landmarks? I've lived there forever but I moved to Gaithersburg recently and I can't figure out where it is by looking at Google (Town Center maybe?). You can use almost any building in downtown and I can get it (Maxim Supermarket, Pho 75, and so on) rob t.
