  1. If you want to get a bargain meal at Kushi without going to RW, look out for their Living Social deal ($30 for $60 on food and drink). That beats RW all hollow, where you get a dinner special for $35.11 sans drinks or extras. Rob
  2. I would like to attend. Fits right in with my Restaurant Week reservations. Thanks, Rob
  3. After a trip to the nearby barber, I stopped by Ray's to ask about the Bistro deal. Turns out it is still available anywhere in the restaurant. If the server doesn't offer the deal, I was told that you can ask for it.
  4. Well, I was looking through Restaurant Week for places to go when I noticed that Farrah Olivia was on the list. This was surprising. A little digging revealed that Chef Morou has revived his cooking inside Kora, his brother's restaurant. So I made a RW reservation and will report as long as the debt ceiling is raised. Note to Don (and/or moderators): Hopefully I handled this correctly. I did find the first thread but since I can't rename or merge, I thought I would post and let you folks do the dirty work.
  5. Also, it looks like there may be no such thing as a hypoallegenic dog.
  6. Where is the love? They're not evil, they're just self-centered, manipulative, and deceitful! Rob
  7. As a single cat person, I have no problem with well-behaved dogs. And personally, I make significant allowances for parents or else when will they ever get out? Finally, when I bring my personable and well-meaning cat Sam with me to Citronelle, he loves the Kit Kat bar....
  8. Last month I finally went to Hill Country to celebrate my 41st birthday. I went early on a Thursday to avoid the crowds and that tactic worked very well--I was virtually the only one there. I went with the $24 special with 1/4 lb moist brisket. They wouldn't let me upgrade from the lean brisket in the special so I had to buy it extra. The sides were baked beans with burnt ends and collard greens. The beef ribs and the moist brisket were excellent and I enjoyed them thoroughly--smoke and fat and meat combining in a most pleasing fashion. Unfortunately the lean brisket is just dull. The restaurant is really missing a beat by not allowing an upgrade to moist for a fee. The sides were okay though I was definitely disappointed in the beans. The burnt ends didn't really seem to contribute anything. I would definitely go back if I was feeling flush. In most cases though, I'd probably end up hitting Nando's instead to reduce wallet damage. Rob
  9. Visited Freddy's on Saturday. Enjoyed the fried calamari and the tremendous lobster roll. Really nice balsamic dressing for the iceberg salad, though the salad itself only had tomatoes. Service was rough but hey, I came in less than three hours after its opening. All in all, a success. I shall returm! Rob
  10. When my mom made them out of canned clams, the term "clam fritter" probably would have been a better descriptor. Rob
  11. Well, that's a little facile. If you recall, Gillian Clark was on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, remember? Like the show or not, it didn't just cover diners. Also, I have been to the Silver Diner in Arlington recently and endorse the change wholeheartedly. As far as area diners go, I like it more than any I have visited. Note I have not been to Bob & Edith yet.... Rob
  12. Went to the Fairfax branch because Annandale didn't pick up the phone. They said the chicken would be ready in about 45 mins and it was when we arrived an hour later. My brother, who has never any Korean fried chicken before, really enjoyed both flavors. He also had praise for the pickled radishes, noting that many other house-made pickles are "all vinegar." Great experience, all in all.
  13. Matt, I've been thinking about this concept and I think that two people might be able to do it. Hit me backchannel if you are still interested. Rob
  14. Hi there, I was reading a story in the Boston Globe about the city's glorious food past: Food City In passing, the author noted that the New York Public Library had collected over 700 menus from one 19th century restaurant in just 4 years (1862-1865). So I wondered whether future generations would know what we ate. Thus, this proposal. Is anyone else interested in collecting and saving menus from DC right now? If I can find sufficient interest, I would be glad to figure out if the DC Library or the Library of Congress would be interested in participating. If they aren't, maybe a local college is. The rest of the collection process should be easy to suss out. I will only go ahead with this unless at least 15 people evince real interest or am persuaded by a few folks who REALLY want it to go forward. Let me know if you definitely want to participate, preferably in this thread or by PM if you are shy. Rob
  15. The prices on the menu have definitely caused me to avoid the place up to this point. I guess the $24 deal for one is ok, but that means that I end up with at least $30 with tip--probably $40 or more with a beer. What if I want to mess around with the menu? I suspect the damage would be worse. Rob
  16. Went to Medium Rare on Saturday when I was feeling low and came out feeling a lot better. I took a bar seat initially but I did not get a greeting of any sort after initial eye contact and a few minutes' wait. As a single diner I have tended to get better service at a table so I gave up quickly and obtained a two-top from the gracious hostess instead. Once I was seated, I had great service during the rest of the meal. I have nothing but praise for the food. Steak was done to a perfect medium rare and the fries were great. On top of that, the salad was perfectly tossed (aka invisible to the naked eye) with a wonderful dressing. The hot fudge sunday was good but too much for this diner--I'd say it would be perfect for two. The only complaint I have is that I wasn't fond of the '90s/00s rock in the background and would have preferred something like a leisurely bop soundtrack (a la Miles Davis' "Boplicity" or "So What") instead. But really, who cares about that? I would go back here in a heartbeat. Rob
  17. Tuesday works for me. I vote MU as well. Rob
