  1. I saw that blurb on Sietsema's chat and was quite bewildered because the woman who answered the phone at Fiola told me the 18th! Someone needs to straighten things out.
  2. Evidently, we will not have to wait much longer. According to the restaurant, Fiola will be opening on April 18 and is taking reservations now. The phone number is 202-628-2888. If you happen to subscribe to UrbanDaddy, their opening date of April 11th is incorrect. I talked with the restaurant before posting this message and my starting date is directly from them. Rob
  3. Inspired by this entry, I went and did the $20 for three appetizers deal. I got a generous bowl of stir fried yaki udon with wild field mushrooms & ox tail and it was delicious--very much an asian take on oxtail stew so it sounds like the Shanghai noodles dish above. A heaping stack of tempura green beans with curry salt and pickled ginger vinaigrette were also quite tasty though the curry salt was applied a little too lavishly. Finally, the crispy pork belly with spicy aioli and steamed bao buns were a great finisher even though there were only two little buns to be had. Heck, they're appetizers after all, right? rob
  4. Don, You have always been kind to me, even though I post rarely. Whatever you want to do, you've got my support. Rob
  5. I looked at the Hill Country menu and there was a Barbecue Beef Sandwich available at lunch for $9.50 (with a 16 oz soda available for an extra $1). Rob
  6. I would like to mention the oshizushi again (since the last time someone brought it up was 2006). The pressed marinated mackerel sushi was great and I had six enormous pieces for $13.95. It made a great lunch. Rob
  7. Looks like we finally have some official news! According to this missive, Hill Country DC will be opening in a few weeks ("mid-March"). Rob
  8. According to Wikipedia, the proper term for the sauce in Chinese cuisine is "plum sauce." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duck_sauce
  9. I am on their email list and so far they have not said anything about DC. Guess they are keeping their cards close to their collective vest.
  10. Unfortunately, my solo thanksgiving trip to Trummers on Main had very mixed results. The oyster stew appetizer was very tasty though lukewarm. I had chosen the fish for my entree, which may have been my undoing. After a decent 30-40 minute wait, the fish came out and it was cold. The brussels sprouts leaves were overly salty as well. I was a little under the weather and could not bring myself to make a fuss over the entree on Thanksgiving. However, I must say that the pumpkin pudding cake was absolutely delicious.
  11. Hey folks, I am going to Trummer's on Main for Thanksgiving. Honestly, I am thinking about going for the shortribs instead of the turkey. Any reason why I should stick with the bird? The menu is here. Scroll down to the Thanksgiving section. Rob
  12. This sounds like a job for the manager. Actually, have you talked to them after the fact? I think that an apology is due to you at the very least. $42 is not chump change, at least to me.
  13. I went to Againn DC a few weeks ago to take advantage of that Livingsocial coupon ($25 off $50) and had a really great time. The service was right on and I was quite surprised to receive so much attention because I was all by myself and the tables were virtually empty. The food was very good: a tangy pickled vegetable salad, a sweet "pint of prawns," and a nice piece of salmon with crispy skin in a ratatouille with chili oil. I was so impressed that I pulled the manager aside and said nice things about the restaurant. Normally all you hear is negatives in that biz so I thought he would like to hear some nice things instead. After hearing my compliments, he gave me a dessert on the house! (hey, there's no dessert up here!) Initially I was very embarrassed because I wanted to write about the trip here but felt like my integrity might be questioned due to the freebie. However, Mr. Boone's experience led me to share my positive experience in contrast to his. Maybe the management is stretched thin like Mr. Boone suggested and I got the luck of the draw when it came to managers.... Rob
  14. If there is room for one more, include me in. Rob
  15. Same here. At least one week of notice would be good so I can decide whether or not I can go. Rob
  16. When my dad visited a month or two ago, I brought him to Spice Xing. He is a huge fan of Indian cuisine and visited the country back in the late 60s. After eating at Xing, he swore that their food was as good as any Indian food that he has eaten in America. Rob
  17. According to the City Paper, Hill Country D.C. is opening this month at 410 Seventh Street NW. Looking forward to it.... Rob
  18. I showed up without checking the board. Go me. Went to Ray's the Classics so it wasn't a total loss. Rob
  19. Just made a quick call and the answering machine is on. I don't know what that means but at least there is hope. Rob
