  1. I prefer Ruan, but Mrs JPW prefers Nava. Peanut and Edgy don't care as long as they get plenty of rice.
  2. Quick note to add that this isn't on Colesville Rd. It's next to the liquor store parking lot around back.
  3. Shelly, 1st, welcome to DR. 2nd, this board is much different than Chowhound. As a whole, the posters here don't "hide" favorite places from others. If we like a place we want everyone to know about it. I think that the amount of time and effort that people put in trying to keep track of Peter Chang as covered in the new Yorker piece is good evidence of that. All of those efforts were reported publicly on this board. Start with Don's dining guide. Give us a better idea of where you will be in DC and what you like and the suggestions will come in from food trucks to fine dining. Cheers.
  4. With memories of the duck tongue that we sampled a while ago at Bob's 66, I will say that I am in complete agreement with you.
  5. Chris Chelios. Signed by an NHL team at the age of 48.
  6. I'd go for a pho-off between the branches of Pho 75.
  7. Snider's is an absolutely nuthouse this morning. Parking lot across the street was packed and people were circling for spots. Pretty well stocked except for bread.
  8. John Murtha. RIP. Largely responsible for the continuing existence of the city of Johnstown through his massive earmarking.
  9. A day late, but I've bought them at Whole Paycheck Silver Spring.
  10. This has to be the party that I saw, but it was Friday, not Saturday. Unless RTC had the misfortune of dealing with churlish groups of 7 in the bar on back to back nights. Needless to say, there is more than one side to every story. Granted that I only saw the second half of the affair, but I thought the RTC staff were as gracious and professional as possible in dealing with a difficult situation.

Ouch. I feel old now, because I like her writing. To me, it's evocative of how she seems to have lived her life -- singing in full rich tones. The first time I felt old is when I had to explain to some of my undergraduate students what the USSR and the Eastern Bloc were.
  12. That's "The Famous Grouse" to you.
  13. I always referred to it as Pittsburgh-style because it doesn't quite fit any of the other styles typically referred to around the US. The owner, Scott, went to Allderdice HS and got his start working at Mineo's. IIRC he once told me that he still uses the Mineo's dough recipe. I'm guessing that the "Pittsburgh-style" restaurant in Myrtle Beach is the Primanti Bros. outlet there.
  14. Cheese fondue tonight. Hoppin John for the neighborhood pot luck tomorrow. Chicken and sausage gumbo for dinner tomorrow because the Higher Power smiles on all people who dig into some gumbo.
  15. Stopped in for a second time yesterday. They are slinging some seriously good wines out of this place (including one of my favorite Rhone producers, Yann Chave). As noted above, all are Weygandt imports* and mostly French with a fair number of German and Austrian bottles. A lot of the wines are on the pricier side, but my rough guesstimate is that about 30% of the labels are under $20. The staff are very knowledgeable and (unlike another wine store further up Connecticut Ave) very nice whether you are buying a $100 bottle or a $10 bottle. *I did spot a California Syrah, but didn't ask what it was doing there.
  16. While not contesting Michael's StrunkandWhite-ly complaint, I will say that John (docsconz) is a very knowledgeable diner and one of the few people involved with eG for whom I have a great deal of respect. I just wish I had the opportunity to eat at the places he does, as often as he does. (Where's that damn envy emoticon when you need it!)
  17. I have heard that a recent wedding at the Oval Room was a spectacular occasion. Alas, i was too sick to attend.
  18. Books: Ratio by Ruhlman Momofuku My New Orleans by John Besh A couple of bottles of wine Yet another Microplane. (I appreciate that my aunt in law knows of my passion for food, but she needs to start keeping track of what she has given me, so that she doesn't give me the same thing year after year after year)
  19. Me! For finally getting the data sets out the door! Got my christmas themed hawaiian shirt and my Santa hat on! All together now - "Tiny Bubbles"
  20. Yep. It still seems like yesterday that we had to cancel out on the first ever DC eGullet event at Colorado Kitchen because we had to get to the hospital.
  21. Joe Strummer. Alas, I couldn't make the gig at The Passenger tonight.
  22. My 5 year old is on a first name basis with all of the bartenders at RTC. Actually, she's on a first name basis with about everyone in RTC, including some of the customers.
