From Sietsema's chat yesterday...

Alcova Heights, Arlington, Va.: So Tom, who would be your pick for Chef of the Year?

Tom Sietsema: I have the list of finalists in front of me, but I'm sworn to secrecy. Two of the candidates on the roster are certainly deserving of the honor, in my opinion.

Anybody want to guess at the other three?

Congrats to the nominees.

But I do have one question--does anyone go to Mie n Yu?  That seemed odd because I never hear anything about it.

Likewise, I was a bit surprised that Mie n Yu was on there. I've never heard anything nice about the place, although it may very well be that I live in a vacuum.

Congratulations and good luck to all!

Does anyone know their criteria for "new restaurant?" Feels like BlackSalt isn't all that new, and with the nominations for their chef and manager (congrats starfish!) I'd think that Notti Bianche would have been nominated in that category.

Mie n Yu was last year's RAMMY "Favorite Restaurant" as voted on by the public. ----> *

I have been to Mie N Yu a few times. It is fun. The decor is nice. The food is average, but I venture some of the restaurants some love on this board are average IMO. Their Foie Gras with Blueberries is delicious. My kids love the place.

I question the nomination of one of the pastry chefs, Steve KLC. I have never tasted a dessert of his that has been outstanding.

Isn't this the organization Michael Landrumm can't stand? Just curious.

To quote the nomination form:

A restaurant that must have been opened between December 1, 2004 and December 1, 2005 and already distinguishes itself as a pacesetter in food, beverage and service.

Congrats to all the nominees!

[A special thanks to Chef Armstrong & Meschelle for their quick reflexes and Danny for not laughing too hard! <_< ]

We've been once. Interesting experience (if you like sitting on pillows and trying to eat off of a serving tray sized table.

ETA: strange, this echos my earlier review. I must be in a rut...a rut...a rut...a rut..

Does this count:

And to be honest, Mie N Yu boasts one of the most attractive restroom areas in town, a sort of mini-harem of unisex bathrooms, each with its own full-length carved wood door around a central cluster of sinks whose faucets trickle water into barrels filled with polished river stones.

good luck to all of the rammy nominees, but especially the ones that participate in this forum.

win or lose, we'll all be "celebrating" at the after party.

p.s. a word to the wise be careful where you dine tonight - many of the staff members at some restaurants will be at the marriot wardman park rather than staffing a post tonight.

Witness once again their failure to recognize the wine and beverage program that sets the gold and platinum standards for taste, depth, breadth, truly world-class knowledge and value in this area, let alone the only wine program hereabouts worthy of international distinction, and the man behind it.

Mark, I know I'm not your type, but I've got a real Rammy for you anytime.

Congratulations to all the winners
