Kriedl sold Cafe Tirolo about a year ago. I tried it once a month later and it was okay (certainly better than Cafe Monti). But I haven't been to Cafe Tirolo lately. -

Just to add: if looking for a good Austrian place instead, Cafe Katja in Manhattan has always been good when we've gone. As for the beer halls, the Bohemian Beer Hall has always been a great big outdoor place to drink & used to be pretty much the only place of its type in NYC. Now, there are many outdoor beer halls, including a decent one attached to the New Prospect Hall in Bklyn (the catering place that does the tv commercial "we make your dreams come true") so its not so special anymore. And the food is just not anything other than a good way to soak up the beer. I'm not sure about the Istrian Sports Club in Astoria. It may be worth a look as well. I'll just sit here and live vicariously while you do the field work. -
By now, everyone in this forum has read Sietsema's review of Leopold's Kafe & Konditorei in last Sunday's Post Magazine. This was clearly the horrendous service to which Mr. Seistema has been alluding in his last four chats. Was I the only one who found it inconceiveable that a restaurant with "manequine like managers" and "clueless servers" can be granted a single star? My understanding is that one star is given to restaurants that provide a "satisfactory" dinning experience. Has the bar of satisfaction dropped so preposterously low that entrees can arrive atop appetizers? Who could find satisfaction in being ignored by three staff members when trying to order? Mr. Sietsema even reffered to the managers as 'human peacocks' more concerned with their own dinner on a Saturday night than the pleasure of their guests. While not entirely surprised by the awarding of a star to Leopold's - Beacon Bar and Grille was also heavily criticized for their service and earned a star - I am offended as a restaurant professional. I have not been to Leolold's and I am in no way trying to criticize them. I wish their ownership and management team the best of luck. However, this review describes as satisfactory service that would make me walk out if I were a guest, and that I would not tolerate in my restaurant. It makes me want to grow hair on my bald head solely for the purpose of tearing it out. . -
This is a hauntingly beautiful work by Franz Schubert which he composed during the final year of his life (he died at age 31, if you can believe it). Lotte Lenya didn't have a beautiful voice. She had an incomparable gift. Her husband, the brilliant composer Kurt Weill, said that all of his melodies came to him first in her voice. Her voice embodied the mid-20th-century German Zeitgeist, and almost perfectly captured everything about the artistic fusion of the art of Weill with that of Bertolt Brecht. Here she sings "Surabaya Johnny" from the Brecht-Weill "Stí¼ck mit Musik" Happy-End. She remains an inescapably important chanteuse of the 20th century, maybe the most inescapable. -
Euro Bistro is on Elden which is basically Baron Cameron as it goes into Herndon for those who are newer to the area, like I am! Jeff and I went to supper here tonight and had many delicious tasting dishes. We started with a nice shrimp bisque each - it only needed fresh pepper but since none was offered we used the table pepper, it tasted perfect after that. Next we shared a nicely presented goat cheese and proscuitto plate and some hot bread. We had some soft drinks, but they have an extensive wine/beer list. Then we ordered the main course hubby got one type of veal dish which was called Z-something... and I got another one that had heavy cream and mushrooms and bits of cooked bacon, a "heart doctor's delight"! Then we got dessert, mine was a tasty hot apple streudel w/vanilla bean ice cream. He got the bread pudding. Both were presented beautifully as well and tasted very good. The price w/tip was under $75.00 for all that which included soups, appetizer, 2 entrees, 2 desserts and half a dozen drinks. The service was pretty good, but could be a bit better. I would give Cafe Monti a try. Very simple place inside but the food is very tasty.
