  1. "I believe the Paila Marina is ready." -- Gustavo Fring
  2. Bak Kut Teh?
  3. I've had the french onion soup at Bistro Bis a dozen times and always thought it was fantastic.
  4. Ignore all of the items in the name of the place, better boba-type drinks can be had in multiple places in the same shopping mall (in fact there are like half a dozen fronting Bellaire, all battling it out, the creamy/tart variety at Sharetea was my winner), the Szechuan dry noodles here are just incredible. Perfect flavor and textural balance--match-stick cucumbers of a nutty, spicy, sauce... I could go on but just go try it. It's also $4.50, so, yeah. The beef noodle soup, pork chop, fried tofu are all very good here as well, but, those noodles tho.
  5. Apparently it is open. Co-worker tried the lasagna soup said it was decent. I looked at their website - they use no dairy, no butter, no oil and no salt. I might be convinced of the first three ingredients, but no salt?
  6. Kasha Neam sold Kennedy's Natural Foods to a longtime customer, Karen Sherwood, a couple months ago. It's ironic that I'd been going to Kennedy's for well over ten years, and that Kasha's daughter, Elaine, knew my voice when I called, and even what I was going to order: "Tofu Delight, multi grain, no onions, right?" But as many times as I'd been there, we never even knew each other's names, and they had no idea it was me who had been raving about them for so long. But yesterday, I had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with Karen (yes, Kennedy's is now open mid-day on Sundays), and here's the scoop: Karen will be keeping the name "Kennedy's Natural Foods" which has been around for decades. She's also opening Nourish Market on Old Dominion Drive in McLean, near the intersection of Spring Hill Road (this is very close to being Great Falls). Nourish Market will (in addition to being a market) feature grab-and-go fare that's made at Kennedy's, so in essence, she'll have a single-kitchen mini-chain in a few more weeks. At some point in the future, "Nourish Market" will be worked into the Kennedy's Natural Foods signage in Falls Church. The sandwiches (I enjoyed a Chicken Salad, multi-grain, no onions) appear to be fairly close to what they were before, with slight variations on the names. Cheers, Rocks [P.S. Out of deference to both Kasha and Karen, I'm retiring the Kasha's Kitchen thread (retired in italic), and beginning this new one.]
  7. Since winter is once again at our throats, a month early this year, and with the New Frugality forcing us to reconsider all of our dining choices, I thought that this was as good a time as any to look at professionally-made soups. I was just at breadsoda last night and really enjoyed the mushroom and brie soup. It had all sorts of nice things in it and it really hit the spot. They DO have take-out containers, and for dining in, you can get a cup or a bowl. If any restaurant has a French Onion soup, I'm a complete pushover for it, I almost have to order it. The more cheese on top, the better. If you need a chainsaw to cut through it, I'm satisfied Central does a great one, as you might expect. Bistro Franí§ais has the classic textbook one. So, who's got the soup that warms your cockles these days?
  8. Okay, I love making a variation on Lulu's simple, thin lentil soup w lots of garlic and croutons, aged a day. Italian version with chesnuts and pancetta, yum. Deborah Madision's lentil minestrone is a delicious change, though I wish I could find a new source for the tiny pasta stars that made it special. Whenever I am cold and need only a little something to tide me over, a cup of curried lentil soup from Teaism is just the thing. In the mood for something new, I am asking you all for suggestions. It has to be vegetarian. No mushrooms, no wine; kid-friendly. I have Le Puy, Beluga and a handful of little brown Spanish lentils. Shallots, leeks, garlic, onions, parsley, carrots, sweet potatoes, Parmesan rind, celery dot dot . Plan is to spoon leaves of baby spinach in when serving.
