  1. Hope you stayed til the end. It got kind of exciting! I was a Houston Astros fan until I gave that up completely the year DC got the Nationals, 2005. That turned out to be the ONLY year the Astros ever made it to the World Series, and I had switched allegiances! They got swept by Chicago White Sox, all tight games.
  2. Website Tim Carman's story in the Washington Post This is related to the guys who own Cava. I like their lamb chops and spanakopita better than Cava's, and I had both last week! Can't say I have enjoyed the Italian specialties on the menu, though. Half price bottles of wine on Tuesdays. Nice homemade baklava and galaktoboureko! Some of the other desserts are from bakeries. We've somehow missed this place though we pass right by it. Across the street from the Safeway where we shop.
  3. Is that Corrado Soprano on accordion? Just kidding. It's Pee Wee Broussard with the Happy Playboys of Scott!
  4. Still on target with the Tandoori scallops and the crab masala we had Friday night! Wonderful! Gonna try tandoor lamb chops next time.
  5. True. The winners in the Pioneer category were not even nominees but overlooked stars who rightly should have been named to the Fantastic Four. Somebody thought they surely would have been elected to their teams' Fantastic 4. Winners: Walter Johnson Nap Lajoie Christy Mathewson Cy Young Here were the nominees for Pioneers. Winners were not even nominated in this category. Grover C. Alexander | SP Cap Anson | 1B Buck Ewing | C Wee Willie Keeler | RF King Kelly | RF Kid Nichols | SP George Sisler | 1B George Wright | SS
  6. I have heard this promotion was a tie-in with the movie Fantastic Four, and not very serious at all. What was the reason at all for 4, not 5, not 9, which is the better number altogether? If the city were the unit involved, then the 4 for DC would IMO be Walter Johnson, Josh Gibson, Cool Papa Bell, and either Sam Rice, Bucky Harris, Goose Goslin, or Frank Howard. Lest anyone say the Negro Leagues don't count or the Grays weren't Washington's team, I say they were the NY Yankees of the Negro Leagues for about 10 years, and spent quite a few years with either half or two thirds of their home games in DC, not Pittsburgh, so that should count for something. If they Grays were Pittsburgh's team, then why weren't Gibson and Bell on their Fantastic Four? Notable left outs on Fantastic Four: Yogi Berra. How did THIS guy get left off the Yankees Mt. Rushmore? Shows how good the Yankee franchise has historically been. Albert Pujols. Good call! I would also say Dizzy Dean should have been on the Cardinals' Fours for his 30 win seasons. Juan Marichal. Belongs with the Giants top 4 above Posey. Marichal was the winningest pitcher of the 60s. Not sure but did Grover Cleveland Alexander make it on his team? Dominating pitcher. Eddie Collins with the Athletics. And Frank Robinson should have been in the top 4 living players, IMO. Why wasn't there a top 4 managers category?
  7. I wouldn't bet on myself to lose ANY games. Anything I could possibly gain by throwing a game here or there would be way offset by the bonus money and extras awarded to the World Series victor, which is what I would always want to be! It's the raison d'etre.
  8. Hard to locate entries on restaurants that I didn't know are listed as being in more than one location.
  9. Max Scherzer, Washington Nationals pitcher. No hitter today. More than that. It's two consecutive games he has taken a perfect game (no walks,no errors, no opponent on base -- very rare) so late into the game. Today he was ONE out away from a perfect game. Pirates batter was hit by a pitch and got to his base.

  11. Chocolate syrup celebration story Just a goofy way of letting off steam, I guess. There's a lot of tedium over the course of a season, so why not?
  12. ""And then Howard Stringer (head of CBS) left, and I believe now is in charge of a very successful string of nail salons." Still getting in his quips til the end!
  13. Those were some great Yankee teams he anchored! Surprised he's not in the HOF! No, I would not rate him above Bench. Bench and Ivan Rodriguez are probably the two best defensive catchers ever. Today it's Yadier Molina.
  14. I like the fact that Yogi Berra was a "bad ball hitter," that is, he would swing at a lot of pitches others would take, sometimes out of the strike zone, and still get hits! In today's lineups and strategies he would be the perfect number 8 hitter on a National League team. So many of today's number 8 hitters get no pitches in the strike zone, nothing to hit, hoping to walk him in favor of pitching to the number 9 slot, which is usually the pitcher. In the National League the strategy is to walk the number 8 hitter so that they can pitch to the number 9 guy, the pitcher, who is the worst batter in the lineup. Someone who bats like Yogi Berra could mess that up spectacularly! When asked why he swung at bad pitches, he famously said "They looked good to me!" That's a philosophy you could live by. Let's not forget Thurman Munson as a bridge between Yogi and Posada. Munson was the most valuable 1970s catcher, so respected by the Yankees that his teammates revived the practice of naming a team captain. They were not designating a team captain for a long time before Munson. Munson was the link between Yogi and Jeter, IMO.
  15. I've gotten Cherokee Purples and other heirlooms at J.R.Wright and Sons on New Hampshire Avenue, Colesville (Silver Spring). I get plants there every year. Not familiar with Black Krim. Will look for them this year.
  16. Coming back from a 9-1 deficit, that was exciting! More like a football score, 13-12.
  17. Doesn't sound quite like the same chicken dish we had in December. It was not a dish to be split for two. Crispy skin and juicy meat, not dry at all. But I don't remember much more than that. Maybe it was more dark meat whereas yours was more white meat?
  18. Sounds a bit inconsistent with the main entree. Our last two visits (December and again this Saturday) were both really very good! In December I had roast chicken that was anything but ordinary. More like the chicken we used to get at Palena. This Saturday it was suckling pig for two. The skin was crispy and the meat juicy and tender. Came with new potatoes and with ramps and marinated sweet yellow peppers. We also had -- burrata, (agree, maybe the best single dish) hog head cheese sausage salad (this was so tasty. I thought I was at Marcel's when this came out!) arugula salad with anchovy dressing (the crostini just soaked this up so it got better and better as you got further into the dish) fried sardines with Meyer lemons Wife had raviolini with fava beans and ricotta (next single best dish!) in some kind of thick, potato like broth. Could not get enough of this. I had spaghetti chitarra with lamb and pork meatballs (really enjoyed this one too. Had this before) The other two entree choices were quail and red snapper. I could have gone with either one but I had heard that if there's an entree to be split, that's maybe the best one to go with. Chocolate cake and ice cream. Nothing too fancy. Can't remember the other choices. So between December and last Saturday I am feeling more confident about the main entree working well. I am thinking next time of asking if I can replace the main entree with another round of the pasta, it's been that good!
  19. Pineapple sage, thyme, and chives survived the winter, but not the rosemary (again, second year in a row.)
  20. Average to cool summer predicted, and probably drier than normal: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/capital-weather-gang/wp/2015/04/24/current-el-nino-improves-odds-for-average-to-cool-summer-in-washington-d-c/?hpid=z4 What does this mean for gardeners? Should we plant later than usual, or anticipate more watering?
