    John, the owner of Vicino in Silver Spring, learned his white pizza from Pines of Rome. Indirect descendant of AV Ristorante. I tried the white pizza at AV shortly before it closed and liked Vicino's better! Wish I had gone to AV sooner for their rabbit!

    In early June my wife and I had roast beef poboys at Parkway Bakery and Tavern and both came away wondering where was the flavor. The meat was tender and the bread very good but we left scratching our heads about all the good publicity. I guess we should trade notes with others who've been there recently. I would say Johnny's PoBoys in the FQ are much more flavorful.

    Ralph Stanley. What a treasure of a musician and singer he was! This was him on banjo singing that high harmony on the song Rank Stranger. His brother Carter Stanley is singing lead. This song is an old one by Albert E. Brumley, the same preacher who wrote songs you know like I'll Fly Away, Turn Your Radio On, I'll Meet You in the Morning. Well, if you listen to country music you might know them.

    The word "retarded" went out a long time ago, at least back to the 80s when I was a special education teacher, and was replaced with terms like "special," "learning disabled" or "developmentally challenged," etc. It's a new generation (I think in the 90s or 00s) that returned the word "retarded" to common use in protest of the supposed burden of "politically correct" language. Phrases like "______ challenged" are pretty much held up to ridicule today as the most egregious examples of political correctness. Personally I just think euphemisms are meant to show sensitivity and politeness. I do not find "politically correct" language burdensome or oppressive at all.

    The people who say "Trust me to carry a concealed gun and I will cover you if a shooter comes after you in a crowd," are often the same people who tell us "Don't trust our duly elected president because he's maybe one week away from staging a military overthrow of our country and establishing himself as a dictator." NO THANKS. I trust the President more than you. The majority of people in this country do not trust YOU with your concealed weapon in a crowd, thank you. Who elected YOU our protector? You might be a great danger to us in many ways, thank you.

    I agree! The honor of being the starting pitcher in the All Star Game, for me, is rightly judged not only by one's record THIS year but also by one's record in the last post season. It's a valedictory. Arietta would be a good choice for his National League champion manager Joe Maddon to select.

    This year's All Star Game starting pitcher will be chosen by Joe Maddon, manager of the Chicago Cubs, and he will probably pick his own man Jake Arietta to start. But you could argue that the honor should be Strasburg's. Oh well, it's just an exhibition game.

    Just got back from a trip to Lafayette to see family. Yellow Bowl continues to be excellent! The winner is the bisque. I don't know what's in that sauce but they should patent it! First time at Rachael's Seafood in Lafayette for lunch. I enjoyed my gumbo of shrimp, crab, and andouille sausage. Cute little place on the Kaliste Saloom Road side of town. It's an offshoot of Soop's in Maurice. Rachael's one of the daughters. Dwight's was closed in the evening because of the end of crawfish season so we had to get our fix at LT's Seafood in Broussard. Terrific! Better than Dwight's for boiled crawfish! You could get them in 3, 4, or 5 pound servings, and either mild, medium, or spicy. I ordered 4 pounds spicy and finished every last one! This is a popular place, full on Friday night with locals. They had run out of crabs, which was what most people at our table were craving. Around the table I saw happy people eating soft shell crab dinners, boiled shrimp, fried shrimp, and oyster poboy. Everybody seemed satisfied! Guidry's Reef on Pinhook Road for crab fingers, crab gumbo, and crab au gratin. Older crowd of locals, good sign! This is a place that comes and goes in popularity. A lot of people forget about it but it's on an upswing lately. Villager's Cafe in Maurice has our favorite poboys (ham and roast beef for me, pot roast poboy for my wife). Will post about a disappointing roast beef poboy at Parkway Bakery and Tavern later in the NOLA thread. Boudin twice from NuNu's Grocery in Maurice, and once from Johnson's Boucaniere on St. John Street in Lafayette by the Cathedral. I like the spice at Johnson's but the boudin was drier than the NuNu's, if that makes any sense. The best thing of all though was my sister's home meal of fried catfish! So fresh down there! She just seasons it with NuNu's seasoning and some mustard and Zatarain's Crispy Southern Fish Fry. Awesome! Can't wait to try it out at home. Wish I could get the same quality fish, even if it's cheap fish like catfish. When it's done well it's hard to top!

    Thanks to Butcher's Alley for being open today! They have great chicken thighs, Italian sausage, and Bolognese sauce! Sure picked me up in a last minute jam! They rock!

    And Marichal was the winningest pitcher of the 1960s. (Koufax retired mid-decade). The Giants were a great team in the 1960s but maybe not as deep as the Dodgers. Candlestick Park was brutal to play in, I understand, or else Mays would have hit even more home runs!

    This was quite a meal! Especially the third and fourth courses. When I read "lobster mashed potatoes" I thought there might be a small piece on top just for show but NO! There were delicious pieces of lobster all the way through the mashed potatoes! And the duck confit? Oh my! Thanks, Chef Jeff, for a wonderful meal! We enjoyed all the wines, especially the Galerie Sauvignon Blanc.

    The stereotypes in The Quiet Man certainly drew a lot of comment on the IMDB discussion board. I guess if I didn't overlook that kind of thing sometimes I'd have to discard just about my entire list of westerns! Cavalry to the "rescue!" Yeah, the burning of the dowry in QM was a high point! I liked the performances by the priest and the minister, by the brother in law and the widow, and of course the matchmaker!

    I'll recommend Catch-22. Alan Arkin is amazing in it. For comedy I have to include The In-Laws with Arkin and Peter Falk. "Are you interested in joining? The benefits are terrific. The trick is not to get killed. That's really the key to the benefit program."
