  1. Oh. My. Gawd! That is just awesome!
  2. Hope you had a Happy, Happy Birthday Monavano!
  3. Noooo! AGM: There can never be too much mac & cheese w/ bacon. Never. If there is, I'll be glad to take some home. Change my numbers to a +3; will also be bringing bread pudding and a slaw. Weather forecast for Sunday: High of 82 with a 10% chance of precipitation. Yay!
  4. Wait. A. Minute. What happened to the pork butt? And the veggie torte? And the deviled eggs? Scott... sigh... at least do the pork butt. Please.
  5. Change me to a +2. Also, put us in the sides/salad category: fennel and prosciutto salad. And we'll probably bring something else, TBD. goldenticket: When you're depending on folks to pick you up from the subway, you gotta roll on their schedule. Save me a rib.
  6. Dang! I thought/hoped you had found a clip of Zora's "small part."
  7. Is there a "theme" or "competition" or "contest" for this picnic? We've done butter and bacon and cheese tastings. Wasn't there mention of a "I can do better than Ruta" chicken challenge?
  8. Anyone having problems logging in? Got a message from Xochitl10 -- she's been getting an "access denied" message when attempting to log-in for the past two days. Told her I would check it out.
  9. I pour libations and bow my head to honor, remember and celebrate John Hope Franklin.
  10. Because I thought that was Father's Day. Isn't it the second Sunday?
  11. Is it too early to start planning? I'll start the ball rolling by calling out some dates: May 31 June 7, 21 or 28
  12. I used Turbinado (sugar cane) instead of (beet) sugar to sweeten whipped egg whites. (The one thing I forgot on my shopping list.) I think that's the reason it took so long to get the egg whites to whip and form peaks. If I had used 10x sugar... which I had on hand -- other recipes I've seen use 10x sugar to sweeten egg whites -- is it a 1:1 substitution?
  13. Dinner for 4: Muchies: Homemade pickles (bought/made by a guest) Amuse: Broccoli soup w/ chive-cayenne oil Sauteed cheese polenta squares Mains: Chicken and cremini mushroom ragu Creamy polenta with sharp cheddar cheese Roasted broccoli Wine: 2008 Altos Malbec Dessert: Bittersweet (flourless) roulade, filled with strawberry preserves and chocolate liqueured whipped cream, topped with dusted with cocoa and powdered sugar, raspberries (Alice Medrich) Gluten-free apple pie (Whole Foods, bought by a guest) The only "miss" was the apple pie: the crust didn't hold together and the apple filling was terribly sweet and overpowered the whole thing. Two hits: the roasted broccoli (Cook's Illustrated) and the creamy polenta.
  14. The first thing I would do: find and stuff -- with steel wool -- points of entry. Yes, it's quite time consuming but really quite effective. And, until you get things under control, use glass jars. I prefer glass to plastic because: glass is easier to clean; it doesn't stain; you can clearly view contents and know when you're running low; and the odd sized jars looks quite funky.
  15. Whoa. Didn't see that one coming.
  16. Please stop by to wish our friend ferment everything farewell as he prepares for his cross-country move in April. We'll be gathering at Big Hunt on Thursday, March 19, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. Big Hunt 1345 Connecticut Ave NW Dupont Circle Metro
  17. What's currently in season? If I go to the Dupont market this weekend, what can I expect to find?
  18. ferment everything is ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  19. I knew there was something I was suppose to do! The King Cake! I came across this recipe and am tempted to give it a try. Unless someone can offer an alternative.
