  1. Rocks, after you finish reading "To Kill A Mockingbird" you may want to rent the DVD called "Hey, Boo: Harper Lee and To Kill A Mockingbird." Among its many attractions are interviews with Harper's 99-year old sister, who in 2010 was still a practicing attorney. Harper has not given an interview since 1964. And yes, I really like the idea of a culture/idea forum.
  2. Founding Farmers is very, very noisy. For an anniversary dinner, I'd suggest Proof. Quiet, intimate, great wine program, and metro friendly. Across the street from the Museum of American Art.
  3. I wish I could recall the exact words, but didn't Spike consign DC to the ranks of a second class restaurant city?
  4. Well, it did bring tears to my eyes, so I cancelled at New Heights--forgive me Bill and Hillary and Strobe and Tori-- for Sunday and booked La Caraquena.
  5. Thanks so much. Will definitely try it. Tonight's star was a vegetarian side. Heat pan with olive oil. Add 2 large shallots, 1/2 cup grape tomatoes, 1/2 cup chopped zucchini, and 8 cloves of sliced garlic. Slow cook for about 8 minutes and garnish with minced fresh basil.
  6. This is a modified recipe for two. 1/3 cup of one inch long zucchini spears, 1 1/2 tablespoons of fresh thyme, 2 tablespoons of sliced and pitted kalamata olives, 3 tablespoons of sundried tomatoes in olive oil, six cloves of finely minced garlic, 2 tablespoons of olive oil, with a touch of lemon pepper. Grill at 500 degrees for 5 minutes with the vegetables facing the grill, then turn and grill for four minutes. The salmon should be grilled in Gina Knox cedar papers. Happy eating!
  7. Grilled salmon in cedar papers--via Gena Knox--surrounded by fresh zucchini spears, thinly sliced kalamata olives, finely chopped sun dried tomatoes in olive oil, and lots of minced garlic. I would be happy to provide the recipe and cooking times.
  8. Went for dinner again tonight and except for a moderately large party in the back room it was, as usual, almost empty. Does Hilton subsidize Harth whereas Michel rented space from The Four Seasons?
  9. If Robert Moses were still around he would be thrilled by Tyson's. Everything he loved is there (or will be soon). Concrete everywhere. High, low and in between. Multilane roads going hither and yon. Bland uniformity. Sidewalks, such as they are, rolled up by 8 p.m. This guy wanted to cut a highway through Greenwich Village.
  10. Reston is a planned town. Some others include Brasilia, Columbia, MD, Washington, DC, the Levittowns (PA and NY), and Roosevelt NJ. Some of them have flourished, and some have not. The planners have a tendency to overlook how people really live. Jane Jacobs vs Le Corbusier.
  11. Simple vegetarian dinner tonight. Texmati brown rice, low salt black beans, shallots, Italian parsley, and salsa (from Whole Foods) with a very nice zinfindel.
  12. I agree. Remember when Tom brought on chefs to shill their restaurants? That was a bust. But Todd is an author and a former lit teacher, so I'm not too surprised that he has found this format. It really challenges the questioners to do something other than ask where to take their in-laws from Nebraska for something not too adventurous.
  13. Balducci's fish is usually very good, and the service is much friendlier and helpful than WF. It doesn't have the vast selection of Black Salt, but if you befriend the fishmonger, he will go in the back and find some very fresh delights.
  14. We hve tired of Seasons 52 and Addie's seems to have declined. Any recs for dinner near Strathmore Hall?
  15. This is a great little place! We went there tonight for the second time and had another very good meal. Apple salad with mesclun, blue cheese, pickled onions, and candied walnuts in a light oil and vinegar dressing; a rather small beet salad (a bit of a disappointment); and a very tasty mushroom risotto with zuccchini, shitake mushrooms, and melted gruyere. The entire staff is gracious and professional. Did this space used to house a Dairy Queen. Nine tables and absolutely no ambience.
  16. So do I. Hallmark Cards needs to take some of the blame.
  17. The Yelpers like it, but do you with discerning tastes like it?
  18. We made reservations at the Paul Hamlyn Hall Bar and Restaurant in the Royal Opera House. Has anyone dined there?
  19. We've heard and read good things about Mala Tang. We are vegetarians who shy away from really spicy food and one of us is allergic to nuts. We would really appreciate some menu recommendations.
