  1. Any recommendations for dinner at or near Southbank Centre?
  2. Any restaurant suggestions? Preferably a sheltered place.
  3. Our first and only time there was about a year ago for lunch. We were underwhelmed with mayo larded lobster rolls and very ordinary salads. But because so many Rockwellians love this place, we just made dinner reservations for early February.
  4. Truly shocking! Does this mean that her dietary habits are to blame? Mon Dieu!
  5. We had lunch on Saturday at Foti's. It was our first visit, We both had a wonderfully mellow butternut squash soup with slivers of Granny Smith apples and almonds. My wife (it was her birthday) had one of the lunch specials--a portabello mushroom sandwich with red peppers, red onion, and goat cheese. She loved the combination of soft and chewy textures. I ordered a quite complex grilled chicken, orange, and pepadew salad with a subtle vinegarette dressing. The ambience was very appealing with a deep purple pressed tin ceiling, brick walls, and ample space between tables. East Davis Street was a pleasant surprise with a boutique hotel, an olive oil place, and a very hip coffee shop.
  6. We have three recommendations for the upper West End just off Totenham Court Road--Sardo, Pescatori, and Mennula. Went there last spring and plan to return in April. We would appreciate some recs for Covent Garden and Greenwich.
  7. Parking is also horrible. Because we don't have easy access to the Metro, we have been reduced to dining at restaurants that have valet parking. And that means expensive. It really sucks.
  8. Yes, Tyson's has become a concrete jungle and Rt 7 looks like a 21st century 3rd Avenue EL. We rarely venture into DC on weeknights, but it was my wife's birthday, and I wanted to give her an exceptional dining experience. Our anniversary is in early March, so I will try to traverse the terrain to Fiola again.
  9. A tour bus managed to block the GW Parkway in both directions this evening, and traffic was gridlocked for hours. We were driving on 123 from McLean so, dammit, we had to call and cancel our reservations and wound up at Cafe Oggi in McLean instead. From a potentially memorable meal to an instantly forgettable one.
  10. We have reservations tomorrow evening and would be very grateful for some recommendations that don't include meat. As I look at the menu Crostini Ahi Tuna Tartar, Crostino, Cacio & Pepe Spaghetti, Vincisgrassi, Bucatini, and Ravioli resonate. We're celebrating a birthday. Thanks very much
  11. "You Guys" is a thoughtless and impersonal greeting. I'm old enough to remember the very clever Broadway musical "Guys and Dolls." Imagine the uproar if servers greeted patrons with "You Dolls."
  12. Why do servers greet patrons as "you guys?" We are in our 60s, yet we are inevitably addressed as "you guys." Has my wife morphed into a guy? I don't think so. Is "guy" now gender neutral? Are women dining with women addressed as "you Guys"? Am I alone in finding this greeting off-putting? Does anyone know the origins of "you guys?" Thanks.
  13. We had dinner at Nostos tonight, and it was packed, no doubt partly because of the Washingtoinan Top 100 and 10 top newcomers. We requested a quiet table across from the bar. Tonight's meal was very, very good. Beets with goat cheese, fried zucchini slices very thin with Greek yogurt, a spinach phylo, and grilled octopus. The octopus was less salty (as in good) because I had emailed Nostos with my request. It may not be quite as great as when it opened, but given all of the publicity it has held up very well.
  14. Wow it was corny and great! Carmen Lombardo "singing" "Boo Hoo" and Guy's son in law Kenny Gardner wiggling his shoulders to " It's Later Than you Think." I don't remember Aretha, but I agree that NYE TV essentially ended with Guy's demise. My father's family was French-Canadian, so it made NYE with the Royal Canadians really special. I seem to remember that the last year or two of the show took place in either Grand Central Station or Penn Station. Had they been booted from the Roosevelt Hotel?
  15. Alaskan King Crab Legs, crab cakes, beets (all from Black Salt) and champagne. Do any of you remember Guy Lombardo and the Royal Canadians from the Roosevelt Hotel every NYE? I may be the oldest Rockwellian.
  16. Having been coerced a few times into eating at chains like Cheesecake Factory, I soon realized that these places serve lots of sodium bombs and cholesterol boosters.

  18. I know it's weird, but we want to dine out on New Year's Day. As I scroll the usual suspects, I can only find New Year's Eve places that are open. Nothing on OpenTable, WaPo, or Washingtonian. Looking for fine dining in DC or NOVA.
  19. We had Christmas dinner at Corduroy last year, but are you sure they're open this year? We're going to Assaggi Mozzarella Bar in Bethesda. Don't know if it's kid friendly.
  20. And then the third and fourth oldest threads? Perhaps we need a Rockwellian--contra Orwellian--historian.
  21. Rocks is right. Nostos has slipped. On our most recent--fourth--visit the little pita triangles (which previously were the best I've ever had) with olive oil and oregano were dried out and stiff, and the bronzini was overcooked and lacked texture. We went on a Thursday night and the place was jammed and incredibly noisy. What a shame.
  22. We're having dinner there next week. I'll ask the staff where Tom Elder cooked before Harth. I'll ask if he is a hologram. I''ll ask if I could meet him. On a previous visit our server told us that his mother owns a farm in Loudon County and that much of the produce is grown there. Who knows?
  23. There are three things I like here. The flatbreads are crispy and interesting. The vegetable sides are unusual and tasty--things like brussel sprouts and honeyed squash. And if you dine between 5 and 10 you can snag 1000 Open Table points.
