  1. Grilled swordfish and orzo with feta, black olives, and sun dried tomatoes. But the star was a salsa made with mango cubes, diced and seeded cucumber, red onion, fresh mint, and a hit of lime juice. Delicious and incredibly healthy. Would not be found at America Eats.
  2. We kayaked to Nostos tonight for a fabulous dinner. We began with a combination dip of Tzatziki, Melitzanosalata, and Skordalia. They use pureed bread instaed of potatoes in the Skordalia, and it was creamy and garlicky. Per a few recommedations I had the grilled octopus which was succulent and very tender. A nice size portion too. The grilled salmon with spinach rice and fresh vegetables tasted really, well, fresh. We finished with melt-in-your-mouth baklava. This is a first class restaurant which is hard to find, especially on a rainy night. TS's review is slated to run in the 9/25 WP magazine. I'll be disappointed if he gives it less than 2 1/2 stars.
  3. Fresh Fig Salad. We bought some figs at our farmers' market and cut them into quarters. We marinated them for 10 minutes in a mixture of diced shallot, honey, balsamic vinegar, vegetable stock, and olive oil. Then we put them in arugula and crumbled goat cheese. It was very, very good.
  4. We have reservations for next Thursday at 7:30. We hate noisy restaurants, but the grilled octopus may be worth the decibels.
  5. After eating twice at the Rockville venue we tried the new spot in Tyson's. No windows, so it's very dark. We were seated near the front of the restaurant, so it's a long way to the kitchen. The result was cool to cold flatbread. But less defensible was a very undergrilled salmon on a plank.
  6. I went to Trip Advisor--no doubt a mistake--but service seems to be an issue at Thornton River Grille.
  7. We are staying at a B&B in Sperryville in late October and were thrilled to read Siestema's review of Indigo Cafe. And then the chef left before the print review appeared. Any recommendations for Sperryville and environs? Thanks
  8. We had dinner there on Sunday evening during the latest heat wave. I suspect that the AC couldn't handle the outside temperature plus a nearly full dining room, but Nate had installed some large fans to lessen the discomfort. The food was OK. Seafood stew had two shrimp, three clams, and seven mussels plus some finely diced vegetables. What saved it was a savory, garlicky sauce. The crabcakes were very tasty, with no hint of OB seasoning (just a nice hint of mustard) and a minimum of filler, but they were served on buttery mashed grits which reinforced the richness of the crabs instead of offering a counterpoint. My carmelized onion tart had too much crust and not enough onions. We were disappointed that the cod and the salmon had been removed from the menu.
  9. Circle One Bistro in Washington Circle is another possibility.
  10. I would recommend Marcel's, Ris, or the Blue Duck Tavern. All are within walking distance, and Marcel's will drive you there and back. Downside--all of them are expensive. Founding Farmers in the IMF builing is a bit farther but also less expensive.
  11. But it has a great website. Perhaps "Waterloo" would be a better name.
  12. We ordered the 1/3 lb burgers and could barely finish them. Inasmuch as we were there for lunch, we didn't pay attention to the booze prices.
  13. We had the veggie burgers on multigrain buns for lunch today. They were very good. My SO added goat cheese spread, avocado, cucumbers, and carrot strings. She liked everything but the goat cheese spread which was too thick. I built mine with carrot strings, cucumbers, roasted red peppers, and grilled onions. It was my fault for adding grilled onions, because they fought with the other toppings. Raw red onion slices woud have been a better choice. The veggie burger, as far as we could tell, contained lentils, corn, red pepper, and garlic powder. Neither the burgers nor the huge buns were overly salty. We passed on the garlic aioli sauce--served in a separate container--because it looked very heavy and loaded with calories. Service was friendly and efficient. The place was busy but not packed. The annoyingly loud music emanated from a very nice BOSE system hung from the ceiling. I'm a bit surprised that they have just one location in the area.
  14. Your reply seems a wee bit harsh. I found the review interesting and thoughtful.
  15. We will be in Camden for three weeks and Portland for a day. I called Fore Street today and made reservations. Thanks.
  16. Does anyone have recommendations other than Fore Street? We'll be in Portland on a Saturday evening in August. We prefer surf to turf.
  17. We love burgers that don't contain animals. Has anyone ordered the veggie burger at Counter? It's a CA chain with a location in Reston.
  18. We had lunch at Carlyle today. Iced teas arrived promptly. But after ordering two large salads we waited and waited. Parties arriving after us were being served. After about 30 minutes we asked the server why it was taking so long to deliver two salads. After apologizing the food arrived in about a minute. Then the manager came by to apologize. Then another apology--and extremely involved explantation--from our server. Finally, without asking, our server informed us that our entire lunch was being comped! Classy.
  19. What did you like about the roasted cod? Cod can be quite boring. BTW, I shot an email to Nate about parking, and he said that dinner guests can park in the Wachovia lot.
  20. Because of your enthusiastic mini- review, we booked a table there for a Sunday night in mid-July. Hope parking will not be a problem.
  21. And don't forget the jazz in the Empress Lounge on Friday and Saturday nights.
