  1. Looking for great restaurants in Philadelphia near City Center. Preferably places that focus on fish. The restaurant in the Palomar Hotel looks promising (we will be staying there). Any recommendations?
  2. Thanks so much for the suggestions. I just discovered a website featuring restaurants on Charlotte Street. Lots of very interesting places. We will be there in mid-May, so there might even be the oppotunity for al fresco dining.
  3. We would like to find five or six places for lunch in these neighborhoods, including one or two vegetarian options. We are staying at a hotel at the north end of Tottenham Court Road and would like to walk to the restaurants.
  4. Eventide is the destination restaurant in Clarendon. I don't go there to drink at the bar or in the lounge. I go to enjoy the subtle, creative appetizers and entrees in the sumptuous and elegant upstairs dining area. It has the added advantage of being quiet enough to carry on a low decibel conversation. But if the food declines, then I will take my business elsewhere.
  5. I have never been to the bar, but I have loved the restaurant's food and ambience. Will those also be lost with these departures?
  6. Thanks so much for your great reply. We really like the "white" sweet potatoes orignially grown by native Americans and can occasionally be found at at Giant and Balducci's in McLean. We cannot find them at Whole Foods. I was unaware of the 1930s Southern PR campaign. Getting to Gallaudet would be a hike.
  7. Native American sweet potatoes are hard to find. Most groceries stock yams and often call them sweet potatoes. Native American sweet potatoes have light skin and a very light yellow interior. We have been eating them for several years and find their texture and flavor superior to the African originated yam. If you have been eating yams, I humbly suggest that you seek out sweet potatoes. They are also more nutritious.
  8. Thanks for the helpful suggestions. We decided to try RIZ although we don't like heavy, rich food.
  9. We want to reserve dinner via Open Table for New Year's Day dinner. I would appreciate any suggestions.
  10. Thanks very much. I do Open Table but was unaware of this particular site.
  11. I would appreciate some suggestions about pre-theater DC restaurant specials. I have found Tosca, Corduroy, and Urbana, but there must be many more.
  12. I am concerned about the concept of bringing chefs online with Tom S. He claims that he seeks anonomity while dining and preparing his reviews, but his aim to bring in professional food people, including chefs, every other week for his weekly chats might subvert his intention.
  13. I read the article about the benefits of blueberries in today's WP. Where can I buy blueberry juice in NOVA? I eat beaucoup blueberries with cereal every morning and love them.
  14. We had a delicious brunch at Eventide today. The grilled flatbread was the best brunch entree that I have had during a year of brunching. More importantly, we had requested a booth through Open Table but were seated at a table. We were OK with that, because it was against a wall--not in the middle. During our brunch the acting manager who usually is the head bar tender--I can't remember his name,--came to our table and apologized for the mix up. We told him that we were fine. Then our incredibly professional and helpful server apologized two more times. To top it off, we were compted $10. I LOVE YOU EVENTIDE. Thank you so much. You set the standard!
  15. Sauteed and then baked salmon with a horseradish, apple jelly, and chives sauce Couscous with leeks, grape tomatoes, scallions, and carrots Light, healthy and delicious. EAT MORE BLUEBERRIES everybody!
  16. We love this book of recipes. Tonight we made her rosemary-bean soup. Great Northern beans, garlic, white onion, sundried tomatoes, a sprig of rosemary, low sodium chicken or vegetable stock, and a dash of ground pepper. Bring to a boil and simmer for 20 minutes. We served it with a sliced avocado on the side. The only hard part is cutting the sundried tomatoes. They are very tough.
  17. My SO and I had an early dinner on Saturday evening at 1789 in order to get to the Kennedy Center. The staff was incredibly accomodating and promised to get us on our way by 7:00. And we were. But in the interim, we had an excellent dinner. I had the white sweet potato soup, which arrived as a delicious puree with a whole chestnut. My Black Grouper was moist and not too salty. My SO had an extremely well prepared pear and fig salad with three huge and thinly sliced pears. Her lobster was less inventive, tender but not very interesting. I almost never have dessert but opted for the vanilla/ cranberry sorbet. It was very good, especially the cranberry which was just a tad tart (that's good). On the other hand, this is a very old and tired venue. Worn carpets, restaurant reviews on the walls that were at least 12 years old, and a decor that was a mish mash of "traditional"styles. We were seated in the Garden Room. Why is it called the Garden Room? Apparently because the walls held rather tacky art that featured flowers. This old townhouse could benefit from a "Corduroy" makeover.
  18. Thanks very much. We have several concerts at Strathmore this season, so this is very helpful.
  19. Does anyone have recommendations for restaurants near Strathmore Hall in North Bethesda? Addie's, Oakville, Black Market Bistro, others?
  20. As most everyone knows, it is the gold standard in DC. Today we bought corvina from Costa Rica and sauteed it with a dusting of flour and a sprinkle of lemon pepper. Then it was cooked for two minutes on each side in butter and olive oil over medium/medium high heat. Then we poured a tangy sauce on the fish made up of freshly squeezed oranges, chopped ginger, soy sauce, and mirin rice wine. Fabulous! The variety and quality here are really impressive.
  21. Pete Sampras? I didn't know that. I've been driving by the site of the McLean Tavern just about everyday for at least six or seven months and have yet to see any construction activity. Blockbuster is still in business next to Hallmark Cards in another strip mall in beautiful downtown McLean. The "McLean Tavern" is filling a spot vacated by an independent video store whose name escapes me. Kirite
  22. Last spring we had a great brunch at Cafe du Parc. The current website does not have a brunch menu. Is brunch no longer served?
  23. We will be staying in Leopoldstadt (District # 2) just north of Rosen Park. Any suggestions for lunch? We will be pretty close to Lassalle. Thanks.
  24. We also had a disappointing exprerience at Chef Geoff for lunch last week. Very mediocre food despite the huge menu. You mentioned in your post that one could do better in Tysons Corner. Do you have any recs?
