  1. Exqusite dinner last night and tonight. I went to the Black Salt Fish Market yesterday and bought two crab cakes, swordfish and two sides--green and yellow grilled zucchini and a chickpea salad with feta and olives. Last night we baked the crab cakes. They are unadulterated--no Old Bay, mustard, and very little filling. We made a jicama slaw with fresh oranges and limes, plus mango, champagne vinegar based on a recipe from the book "Raising the Salad Bar." Tonight we grilled the swordfish gently and perfectly and had a savory salad of arugula, yellow grape tomatoes, and a creamy avocado. The dressing was a simple one of olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and ground pepper. We enjoyed a bottle of Estancia Zin '08.
  2. Apparently 1789 has been running its own restaurant week since late June and will continue into mid-September. Metrocurean has a downloadable coupon today. Has anyone eaten at 1789 with this promo?
  3. Local for Campbell's Soups would be Camden, NJ. Yum, dipping into the polluted Delaware River for tasty morsels of....?
  4. Does Lawrence Peter (Yogi) Berra have a role in these places, or did they just highjack his name?
  5. I made a rw reservation at SEI, but the website does not have a rw menu. Suggestions? Thanks
  6. I just googled Ed Witt, and he has a very impressive set of culinary credentials. I just have two questions--why did Adam leave and why did Ed decide to move to 701?
  7. Late breaking news. TK did not perpetrate the hoax. He was victimized by it.
  8. Near the end of the chat TK acknowledges that the whole thing, including the gun Club of Goldvein, is a hoax. Google Sidd Finch.
  9. Jared Diamond has written two books that might be worth reading--although I'm pretty sure that you all have. "Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies" and "Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed." These issues are extremely complicated and providing some ethnographic context might be useful.
  10. We had brunch there today. The service was impeccable. I had a very tasty though oversalted soft shell crab with seemingly several pounds of fries. After scraping the salt off, the fries were excellent. My SO had the omelet which she found delicious, but the potatoes were very dreary. We were ambivalent about the ambience. Pros: Very sleek dining area, cool restrooms. Cons: So noisy that we gave up trying to have a conversation. Just for fun, I spoke as loudly as I could--actually I shouted--but to no avail. I need to learn how to lip read. Parking was a real challenge. But the renaissance of 14th Street is absolutely wonderful.
  11. Still no website, but we did lunch carry-out today. This is a classy place with excellent sandwiches and sides. They have seven or eight vegetarian sandwiches to complement the ones with hooves, feathers, and fins. Excellent beet salad as a side. At least as good as Black Salt. Very helpful staff. They explained how they have installed cooling units that suck very little energy. I asked how business was and was told they it was good, but they needed more breakfast traffic. I did not check out the breakfast menu. I really hope that Nourish flourishes.
  12. We have reservations for Sunday. Thanks for the review. We were interested in the Amish Egg Omelet, the Antipasto Flatbread, and the Soft Shell Crab. It's a very inventive brunch menu. Any recommendations?
  13. Keith, We were unable to get to the CBIs because of fog. But we had three wonderful dinners in SW Harbor, and a great time in Acadia. We stayed at the Kingsley Inn. I f we go next year, we would stay at the Claremont.
  14. Just returned from 17 days in Maine. Here are a few quick takes. Brunswick--Henry and Marty's. Much, much better than Back Street Bistro. Camden--Francine was a big disappointment--noisy, oversalted food, greens from a bag, all of our dining mates were also dismayed. Belfast--try the Belfast co-op. Wonderful organic grocery and restaurant. Southwest Harbor--three very good places from top to bottom: Fiddlers' Green, Red Sky, Cafe 2. We canceled our reservations at Primo in Rockland and Natalie's in Camden on the advice of locals who advised that they are expensive and overrated.
  15. There goes Ray's the Catch? I hope not.
  16. Keithstg is right. The cruise ships don't arrive until August and linger through September. That's when Bar Harbor becomes Maine's Manhattan.
  17. Thanks. Are you sure that OEG will accept my certificate? I emailed Clyde's about their non-Clyde's venues and never got a reply.
  18. For better or for worse, I have a $100 gift certificate to Clyde's. How and where would be the smartest way to use it?
  19. Red meat makes my stomach feel like it has been run over by a bulldozer. Does anyone know when his fish place will open?
  20. Bar Harbor can be a tourist trap. Very crowded. You might consider driving or cylcling to South West Harbor. Much quieter and much more Maine. If you do, I have three recs --Cafe 2, Fiddlers's Green, and Red Sky. But while you are in Acadia, the carriage trails are really interesting.
