  1. the corn is in full force, lots of tomatoes, good looking peaches -- basically, the abundance of summer produce has arrived. Also noticed lots of beautiful lisianthus today, mostly purples & whites, and a few pinks.
  2. It wasn't worth starting a new thread for Burnsville, NC, which is about 30 miles from Asheville, the county seat for Yancey County. There are not a whole lot of options, but if you happen to be there, Rio is passable Mexican food -- except the chips are meh, from a bag -- and choose Bubba's Good Eats (go for anything pig, plus excellent pork rinds) over Pig & Grits (no smoke in the pulled pork and mushy, so probably braised or sous vide). Garden Deli on the town square has serviceable food, not high end, but potato wedges are fried crispy & not greasy, and the portions are generous for the price, friendly service, kid friendly. Since the last time I was there, Yancey Co. now allows alcoholic beverages, so there's beer & wine in the grocery stores and there's a liquor store and a wine shop in town. --- Charlotte, NC (DonRocks)
  3. I'll vote for Taco Bamba -- except on a Saturday.
  4. from your own fingertips: although as I'm sure you're aware the only one even remotely correct is "Nope". ;)
  5. Well, it's just an idea. I'm still going to be making some stuff -- not sure quite what, yet -- and the chicken was going to be an add-on. I guess we'd only discover which chicken tastes best 2-3 hours later
  6. Compare & contrast? I don't know if any more people are interested in the idea.
  7. A thought crossed my mind over the weekend. Since folks are coming from all over the area, does anyone want to do a Peruvian chicken comparison? anyone who wants to participate can pick up a bird or two from their local favorite and then we can do a side-by-side to see how they stack up against each other.
  8. Management is purportedly looking into bringing Orpik back at a much reduced rate now that his contract has been purchased and they would be negotiating from scratch. With the cap limit increase and after signing Carlson, there's about $13.5M of room left for negotiation, so Kempny and Wilson are top on the list to keep. There's been some contact with Beags' agents from other teams; haven't heard if DSP is being courted yet.
  9. Toigo has the very last of the strawberries today, but blueberries are everywhere. Two farmers had corn -- still looks pretty scrawny, but it's corn! One sighting of Roma beans, three of okra. Lots of onions and beets and rhubarb and kale, a few garlic scapes still around, basil now showing up in big bundles.
  10. It's official -- Trotz to the Islanders, 5 years ~$20M contract. It's likely Lambert & Korn will go with him, and scuttlebutt is that that's where Grubauer will land, too, when he's traded soon.
  11. An ownership possibility seems remote unless it's in the tenths-of-a-percent range. Teams are owned by groups of billionaires or hundred-millionaires. It's very unlikely Trotz has the amount of money in his pocket to get into the office side as anything other than a paid employee. There was a photo of him on Twitter yesterday deplaning in Seattle, FWIW.
  12. I saw that a little earlier. I don't know how much I agree with his assessment, but my opinion wouldn't change the outcome. I think the 5-year/$5M ask was definitely stretching it, but it could have been done with the knowledge that Trotz wouldn't get it from the Caps and signaling what someone else needs to bring to the table to sign him up. There's a lot of coaching turnover in the NHL with only one having a 9-year tenure at this time.
  13. I love Coach Trotz and am sorry to see him go, but the Caps didn't want to pay what it would cost to keep him. He'll be raking in the bucks wherever he lands -- which is likely to be the Islanders, so we'll get to see plenty of him in upcoming seasons. Todd Reirdon is the heir apparent to the HC job and he's done a stellar job with the defense corps here, so hope that good effect translates to the forward lines as well. What I'm worried about is that Lane Lambert (PK & PP units) and the goalie coaching (Mitch Korn's replacement) will follow Trotz when he leaves. I have no idea what sort of depth we have in coaching in those areas.
  14. the Annandale location has moved to the Giant shopping center on Little River Turnpike about a mile west of where the Chi MC is now. It's been probably a year or more since I've had the chicken. I thought it was good, but I was always a bit skeeved out by how sticky the floors were and how sour the bar area smelled.
  15. 1. Henry Mancini 2. On the news when he died. 3. Ryan will be on the news when he dies, too. 4. Joan of Arc. 5. Nope. 6. The Teddies and those other ones from West Virginia that we don't talk about in polite company. 6a. The perfectly serviceable National Airport to the clunky Reagan National Airport. 7. New Wilson Bridge, Metro between Huntington and National Harbor. If I'm the only player, do I get bragging rights?
  16. From the website: There are 30 picnic tables in or around the pavilion and electricity, in the form of 4 110-volt outlets, is available for your use. There are two large grills outside the pavilion and a large fireplace within the pavilion. Water and comfort stations are located nearby. There is a softball field and an area for volleyball or relay games. Horseshoe pits are near the front of the pavilion. All are for your use during your event. You must provide the sports equipment, though poles are provided for volleyball or badminton.
  17. I'll be there. No idea what I'll be bringing along other than food and ice.
  18. Tried the chicken & cheese enchiladas at the Springfield location over the weekend. A huge amount of food for $8 -- 2 enchiladas, rice, refried pintos, lettuce & tomatoes, with a fried egg on top. I had also gotten an asada taco not knowing how much food came in the enchiladas. All components tasty, but it's a lot more cheesy than I care for anymore. I ended up eating the egg & sides and left half the enchiladas behind. Still stuffed to the gills, even so.
  19. See, I didn't see them killing the clock that early. I saw Vegas in a desperate, all-out push mode and the Caps defending vigorously. It's hard to generate good offense against that sort of push when chances of a turnover are high risk, so you have to play smart even if it means fewer offensive chances. It's less about protecting the lead and more about not making stupid defensive moves that the other team can capitalize on.
