  1. I saw them last weekend for the first time this season at the Falls Church market, so I imagine they'll be in good supply for the next week or two.
  2. What a smart, smart game they played! Penned the Pens in the neutral zone and ruined their rush, found the holes in the goalie's game, stayed patient and ground it out. Love these guys! So much heart and smarts. And Tampa's style of play is similar to the Pens', so a good lesson in how to shut down the next team. Oh but this glorious win!
  3. Holtbeast saved the bacon last night, but still an outstanding showing (except for that frighteningly bad 2nd period) for the Caps, considering they're without Burakovsky, Wilson and lost Backstrom in the 3rd, while playing against a basically full complement of Pens. One more for the conference, but scary to think that we may have lost Carlson (with his ice time and points) and Backstrom last night. Still waiting word on their evaulations; Carlson undergoing concussion review protocols and Backstrom went out last night with an upper body injury.
  4. Stopped in here for a light lunch today. Sister got a cauliflower & chickpea wrap ($7) and I got the lamb meatball wrap ($8) and we split and shared. Both were tasty, I liked the spicing on the lamb meatballs especially, with nicely blistered naan wraps. The mint yogurt sauce that I drizzled on the lamb was fine but not a standout. I wish they had a braised lamb option with the same spicing, or maybe split the meatballs so that you get some with every bite. Also got a mango lassi (which I've never tried before, btw) and thought it was tasty but too much/too thick as a beverage with a meal. It seemed more like a dessert smoothie to me. perhaps if I was eating something with a lot of hot spicing I would appreciate it a lot more.
  5. Tom Wilson suspended for 3 games for what has been deemed an illegal high hit on a Pens player. I wonder if Coach Trotz will move Smith-Pelley up to the line to fill the spot. He seems like the next best match to Wilson in terms of size, speed, and hard checking play to break down the Pens' lines.
  6. Great game yesterday! Only gave me about 5 minutes of fear. Nice to see Vrana get a goal, he's been working hard with the little ice time he has, but was super impressed with the good work of Chandler Stephenson -- fast, hard on the puck, good hockey IQ. And wonderful to see Holtbeast back in good form.
  7. Had dinner last night at Samurai teppanyaki grill in the GMU shopping center. I had the chicken and shrimp combo, dining companion had the lobster-filet-shrimp, plus the typical miso soup, salad, fried rice, grilled veggies and noodles. It was clean, everything was cooked properly, not the best show by the chef but certainly adequate, and thankfully not oversalted (which is something that I find happens at a teppanyaki with chefs using the salt shakers in their show). A lot of food -- I took fully half of mine home even after eating until I was stuffed, so I think a fair value for the price, which I believe was about $24 for my choice, maybe about $31-$32 for my companion? Plus a sake appletini for me that balanced on the line between sweet and sour. I would have been happy with a tad more sour but was relieved that it wasn't too sweet. Not fine dining by any stretch, but I think a better choice than Kilroy's (which was the other option I was offered).
  8. I'm hoping they learned their lesson about turtling after the two home losses to CBJ when they got up 2 goals and still managed to lose. It was great to see them keep their foot down and continue to be aggressive when they got the lead last night, although their puck clearing in the 3rd period was looking mighty weak against a desperate CBJ team even at 5 on 5, and of course worse when CBJ pulled Bob.
  9. To be fair, the $12 popcorn has free refills. I saw the show this weekend as well. Best contortionist I've ever seen, and the best juggler that I've seen in a Cirque show. All the water elements were well done and a nice surprise. The storyline and costuming weren't as strong as Kurios, in my opinion, but it was a stronger show in terms of acrobatics.
  10. With the Pens, it's not 1-1. From Wikipedia The Pittsburgh Penguins–Washington Capitals rivalry was an inter-division rivalry from 1993 to 2013, and intradivisional the other seasons.[42] In total, the two teams have met ten times in the playoffs. Despite trailing in 8 of the 10 series, Pittsburgh has won all but the 1994 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals where they were heavily favored. The teams first met in the 1991 Patrick Division Finals, when the Penguins defeated the Capitals in 5 en route to capturing the Stanley Cup. In fact, all five Stanley Cups won by Pittsburgh have included a round against Washington
  11. driving by here this morning on the way to the farmer's market, I noticed their signs were down but no new signs in their place, and about a half a mile away, I saw a Silk Road food truck parked by a house. I wonder if they're going to use the restaurant space solely to prep for the food truck or if they're really leaving the brick & mortar location.
  12. Asparagus prices are down a bit, $4 bundles but 7-8 fat spears now. Also saw gorgeous tender sugar snaps and one farmer had a big pile of ramps at $5 per bundle.
  13. Great game last night to tie the series, good speed, good decisions, no idiotic penalities all game long. However, Oshie is looking likes he's playing more hurt than is typical for playoff hockey and I hope he can last through the series. And as well as they played last night, I wonder if this level is good enough to beat the 2nd round teams? Won't know until we get there.
  14. OT was stellar...well, except for the fact we didn't score. The second period blew chunks. Why the Caps can't keep the gas on and deliver a demoralizing defeat is beyond me. As soon as they would get a lead, they would slow down, and a slow heavy game means that CBJ gets more opportunities, which they capitalized on.
  15. The Caps are defeating themselves with stupidity, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. According to the pundits back in October, they shouldn't have even made the playoffs this season. Watching these two games almost makes me wish they hadn't, when witnessing such idiotic penalties that handed the game over to CBJ.
  16. Not as strongly as I hoped for, but the filling still had a taste that wasn't ordinary and complemented the lemon of the cake, so I was happy with the finished product. And it was a hit with the crowd. Only 2 slices left over to bring home in a group of 8.
  17. well, my candied flowers didn't turn out as well as I hoped, but it's still a festive piece of work
  18. Beautiful morning at the market. Lots and lots and lots of bedding plants. Some new lettuces and the asparagus is starting to come in. However, the asparagus I saw for sale was $4 for perhaps 5 fat spears. That's still a bit too pricey for me. I'll wait for the supply to bring the cost down.
  19. So last night clinched first place in the Metropolitan Division and we beat the evil flightless birds to do it. Grubauer in goal has been exceptional. This save was a thing of beauty (Video on nhl.com - best replay is at 39 seconds) For a team that, at the beginning of the season, was said to have perhaps a shot at a wild card berth, to now top the division with 4 games left to play, is amazing.
  20. Did another test run last night and this time my faith in butter cake is restored. However, I didn't get the flavor punch I wanted out of this iteration, so I think I'll go with a straight lemon butter cake, since I know I can really amp up the lemon flavor in a cake batter, and make an elderberry curd and syrup to imbibe & fill the layers, and then do a lemon buttercream frosting
  21. It's the same butter cake I've been making forever. Obviously, subbing the Ikea elderflower syrup for some of the milk was a grave mistake, and I'll never buy that lemon curd again! I'm stopping at TJ's tonight on the way home to pick up supplies for a different take on the same idea.
