  1. Stopped at the Lotte at Ravensworth Plaza this morning to pick up some fresh fish for dinner tonight. While I was there, I noticed they had a good price on lobster at $10/lb. I walked over to the lobster tanks and they only had 4 lobsters, but each one must have weighed 10-15 pounds. I've never before seen IRL a lobster that size and they are way more scary and prehistoric looking than their 1.5 lb. cousins. I'm guessing they got the monsters in for Chinese New Year. I don't even *own* a pot big enough to steam one of those bad boys!
  2. Dined here a week ago with my sister. I dont' remember exact prices, so whatever I have listed is my best guess memory. It's a handsome, comfortable restaurant and I thought the service was very good throughout the meal. I started with a cocktail called the "Just Right" of bourbon, egg, lemon, habanero shrub and served with one giant ice cube and garnished with blueberries pickled in a maraschino cherry brine. It was perfectly balanced with no one flavor coming to the forefront, but instead creating one entirely new-to-me flavor. That was a nice treat. I rarely find a new flavor at my age! My sister got a Moscow Mule and loved it, but it's a lot more heavy ginger bite to it than I like. We shared an order of the lemongrass pork potstickers, which were nice and light, a very sheer dumpling wrapper that wasn't browned much. It was such a delicate wrapper, though, it may not have been able to take much more heat and remain intact. The stuffing was tasty and only pressed enough to hold together. Served with a sweet chili oil based sauce and soy sauce on the side on top of a watercress salad with a little lemony mayo drizzle. I think $11 for 5 dumplings, so I think a fair price for a good appetizer. Mains, she got the cider braised pork shank (around $35) and I got the short rib with baked beans, root veggies and crispy polenta (about $30). I got a taste of hers and the pork shank definitely was the winner between the two meats. Luscious, juicy, delicious. The short rib I got was a good rendition and was cooked well, but it simply couldn't match the yum of the pork shank. The crispy polenta reminded me of the spooonbread my mom used to make when I was a child -- silky, buttery, corny -- that was cut into a rectangle and fried into a crunchy shell. Overall, I thought it was a good meal if you want to stuff yourself on homey comfort food, which I did that night.
  3. Since I wrote the post above, Stick has been pushing in the pucks. All the lines are really starting to gel now, and the 4th line with Winnik and Beagle is so much fun to watch and has become quite the threat to score shorthanded on a penalty kill. Last night they crushed the Blue Jackets to the point where, looking at the CBJ team, I wondered how they had accomplished such a winning streak.
  4. Okay, but know that it does make pizza, but certainly pizza is only a part of their offerings. Take a look at the menu http://www.pizzeriaorso.com/pizzeria-orso-menu-updated-10-19-16.html
  5. I'm liking the young blood on the team, and loving the play of Nisky, Winnik, Beags and Justin Williams. I don't think they get credit for the hustle they bring and I wish more of the team had that 3rd and even 4th effort when they're on the ice. Williams is who I always notice gets to and stays at the front of the net in traffic and it's surprising he hasn't pushed more pucks in yet this season.
  6. My extended family is coming for our family Christmas on Tuesday. I'll have 20-28 folks show up. I'm making four different kinds of chili and I've got the first of the lot (spicy red chuck) braising in a low oven now. I'll get the green pork chili going after lunch. Still have a mild hamburger chili and a vegetarian chili to make tomorrow.
  7. Stopped in the Old Town location today with a friend. A bottle of water and a single patty cheeseburger with the usual fixings was $8.50 or thereabouts. My friend got the veggie burger and an order of fries with cajun spice. The fries were very nicely done, a large amount for the "small" order (I think $4.75), the cajun spicing was quite mild. An interesting twist, the buns are branded with "Burgerfi" seared into them. It was a good burger, a bit better than 5 Guys but not go-blocks-out-of-your-way better. At the price point, if they were next door to one another, I could see making Burgerfi the winner over 5 Guys. The space is nice, the service people are friendly but the crew in there seemed a bit in the weeds when we went in with only a handful of customers in the store (don't know what was happening with take-out/call-in orders, though). I saw Boyle's sodas in the case but didn't pay attention to the beers on offer. Oh, and I thought that BurgerFi would imply it was owned by former Marines, but it's not. Actually a shortening of "burgerfication of America".
  8. Big deep drawers for pots. A sink big enough for your largest pan/cookie sheet to sit flat on the bottom. More outlets. I don't care how many you think are enough, you'll want more. Don't have and wish I did: roll out tall-boy pantry
  9. I used to pass by Fearrington House on my way to see relatives in NC. I remember the community had a paved lot for a farmer's market right near the road and there was a sign posted that all the farmers needed to be gone by 5:00 p.m.
  10. The Exxon is a hole in the ground now. The Staples went into the spot where the Whole Foods was located, but now it's standing empty. Fingers crossed for a SteinMart to move in there.
  11. Staples has closed. The Flippin' Pizza was on the side end facing LRT, by the Verizon building, next to a smoke shop and dental office, not in the middle of things.
  12. Was at the Pinecrest Shopping Plaza for lunch today, intending to grab a slice at Flippin' Pizza, but that is now closed, so went around the corner and considered the options (5 Guys, Ind-Aroma, Firehouse Subs, a chinese take-out, Tropical Smoothie and Fireflies) and decided to go with IndAroma. I think I made the right choice. Got the chaat papdi and a samosa. The samosas are pre-fried and then reheated, served with a spicy green sauce and a mildly sweet brown sauce, and suffered from not being fresh out of the fryer. The filling was the traditional potato & peas and nicely creamy and would have been well served with a hot, crunchy exterior, but was limp and rather chewy. The chaat papdi was very brightly flavored with yogurt and cilantro and fairly priced at $5.25 for a smallish serving. I haven't had it in a while to compare, but I seem to recall the the Shiny's Sweets' (in the heart of Annandale) chaat papri as being a bit spicier and also tangier with sumac & a more pronounced tamarind flavor; the price/serving size would probably be about equal by ounce but I think Shiny's serving is larger. At any rate, it was a tasty lunch at a fair price.
  13. Was hoping to pick up a slice for lunch at the Annandale location today. Big orange sticker over the lock that it's closed and the equipment inside is claimed by the landlord, and a smaller sign saying they're opening on Main Street in Fairfax. I never thought it was a very good location within the shopping plaza itself, and I guess they never got the mass of nearby middle school and TJ HS kids they were hoping for.
  14. Don't forget how much of 2941's bottom line is buttressed by their wedding / event business. It's a huge factor in their success.
  15. Remember Annoying Man Bun? Well, he's actually got a very interesting new idea for his new restaurant in Encino: http://openforbusiness.opentable.com/tips/why-this-chef-is-opening-a-restaurant-with-no-servers/?utm_medium=discovery&utm_contentWhy+This+Chef+Is+Opening+a+Restaurant+with+No+Serv&utm_source=outbrain&utm_campaign=serverless_restaurant&utm_term=5561518
  16. My go-to for chicken thighs is to pull back the skin, splort some dijon on each thigh and spread it around, sprinkled with S&P, garlic powder and Herbes de Provence, pull the skin back over and sprinkle with another round of spices plus cayenne, and put into a hot oven (425) for about 40 minutes. I do a multipack each time so I have leftovers for lunches. But when it first comes out of the oven, I pick the most delectable, crunchiest piece of skin and pull it off and eat that one....and then I toss the rest of the skins because, well, it's just a spicy chicken potato chip of fat. But very easy to do. Steam some broccoli and squirt with lemon juice and it's a fine meal.

  18. How about Requin in the Mosaic District? Although you may want to avoid Dec. 18 -- that's "Brunch with Santa" day

  20. This is the last weekend of the season for most of the produce stands at the market until next spring. There are usually a couple who stick it out until Christmas with some greens and roots, but it's time to switch into winter mode.
  21. Check the diaper in the bottom of the packaging. Often that's where the smell is coming from. If the diaper stinks but the chicken doesn't, cook the chicken now and it (and you) will be fine. If the chicken is independently stinky w/out the diaper, return it.
