  1. Some beautiful hockey being played last night. There was a time in the second period of probably 5 minutes without a whistle or stoppage of play and everything on both teams was fast, crisp and hard played. Gorgeous to watch a game like that. And even more beautiful was the win with a 5-on-3 penalty kill, a washed out goal due to a rotten call on goalie interference, and Wilson's dive into the net to save another goal.
  2. Interesting stat I read on the nhl.com site, that all of the Leafs goals in Game 2 were scored when one of the Caps players was without a stick. Most of the time, sticks are lost due to slashing by an opponent, so it is highly likely that uncalled penalties factored into our double OT loss.
  3. Penguins beat Columbus 3-1 last night, even with the Pens' starting goalie being a last-minute scratch. I watched part of that game and all I can say is CBJ needs to keep beating up the birds b/c they looked really good in last night's game, and if the Pens win that series, we want them as bruised and bloodied and slow as possible before we meet them. Rangers won, Bruins won, and an OT win for Edmonton over the St. Louis Blues.
  4. And so it begins, another run for the Cup. A much harder-won President's Trophy this season than last, but the team looks deeper, grittier, hungrier than last season's as well. We should beat the Leafs in 4, possibly 5. Happy to see Pens and Columbus battling each other in the first round. Pens are a pretty beaten-up team this time around, lots of injuries and Letang is out for the season; Columbus hasn't looked as good in the last 6 weeks as they did earlier in the year. I'm not sure who I want to win that series, as it looks like it could go all 7 games, and whoever is left standing is going to be even more beat up at that point, so do I hope Pittsburgh comes out on top so we vanquish the Pens to get that niggling doubt wiped out going forward, or do I hope that CBJ wins that series because I think we've got their number? Either way, I'm planted in front of a TV somewhere for the game on Thursday night. Go CAPS!
  5. Went for lunch today and had the pulled pork plate. The menu lists it as coming from Berkshire hogs. The meat was tasty and truly pulled, but a little dry. I tried it with the hog sauce and the vinegar sauce. The hog sauce is a slightly sweeter, more tomato-y take on the vinegar sauce, which was still a bit sweeter and not as hot as what I think of as eastern NC BBQ vinegar sauce. But Mixon is not from eastern NC. I had it with the collards and the fries. Good tasting collards , but they needed a little more chopping, as they were a bit unwieldy half-leaves. Fries were decent. There are also some sweet-and-sour pickle slices on the plate that were tasty. And word was that Mixon himself is in the kitchen today and there was a whiteboard special of whole hog dinner tonight.
  6. How tastes differ. I think Jimmy Stewart is one of the best actors to ever appear on film and I'll pick one of his films over any other rerun drivel almost every time. It's a tough call between Grant and Smith in Philadelphia Story, I'll give you that much, but I think Stewart's part had a lot more nuance that had to be conveyed than did Grant's.
  7. Driving by this morning, Meat In A Box is gone. There is a place called Kabob[olo]gy in it's place and the signage says "Mediterranean cuisine." I have no idea if it's a rebranded operation from the Meat folks or if there is a completely new regime/chef in place. And the Smashburger has closed.
  8. My sister and I stopped for lunch at the Springfield Mall location today. This time I had my glasses on when I looked at the menu and could see the calorie counts for everything. I love their macho peas but passed them by today -- 328 calories for a side order! Only the french fries had a higher calorie count for a side. I ended up getting the thigh skewers with the mango lime sauce, which was tasty but a little too tame, and the cole slaw, which was almost the very definition of average. My sister got the plain thighs and corn on the cob and said the corn was good, but she had slathered it with the wild herb sauce at the table, so i don't know which flavor she was actually commenting on.
  9. and he did it with a hat trick and off topic, but Braden Holtby, in that same game, became only the 3rd NHL goalie ever to have three 40-win seasons
  10. Sorry for your distress. The sugar-free issue has come up in Amazon reviews: https://www.amazon.com/Haribo-Sugar-Free-Gummy-Bears/dp/B008JELLCA
  11. One vendor had them at the Falls Church farmer's market last weekend, $5 for a quart box. The stand was on the bottom half of the L, sort of across from the lettuce lady and near the Turkish food vendor
  12. Went to the Caps game (unexpectedly) last night and grabbed dinner at the venue. Went to the Oyamel Cocina Mexicana pop-up there and got the Torta Cochinita, and glad I did. A very tasty sandwich and left me wanting the recipe for the marinade used for the pork. If you're eating at the arena, this is a nice sandwich to try. 13. In case I missed coverage of it in the thread, Mixon's is now open for lunch. A coworker went there today, got a pulled pork sandwich, cole slaw and Brunswick stew for $10. Said it was a lot of food for the price, the Brunswick stew was very different from anything he's had before but still tasty. he thought the pulled pork was good, the cole slaw was fine but not special. And said there weren't many women in the place at lunchtime.
  14. I thought it was good, too. I always liked the celebrity face-off dish competition -- especially remember James May getting soused making some boozy dessert.
  15. I got an email that there is going to be an American production of The F Word with Gordon Ramsey and it is casting teams of four to compete. It's calling for families, groups of friends, etc. to try out. Anyone in our foodie family want to give it a shot?
  16. No. Adam Greenberg of Barcelona won both a round of Chopped and then also won the year-end tournament of all the Chopped winners. I can't think of anyone else, though, that won. Will Artley should have on his appearance, IMO.
  17. Well, despite my good intentions, I saw the first half of the first round and when I woke up, they were just starting the final round. Chef Ype impressed the judges by getting his ice cream into the machine faster than has ever been done in that kitchen, about 2 minutes into the round. He ended up winning the episode, so good on him. I'll have to catch reruns and see what & how he cooked .
  18. Went to the Springfield location for lunch yesterday, got a chicken sandwich (pita wrap) and a side of baba ganoush. The wrap was overfiled to the point that it wasn't even worth attempting to hold it to eat it and I worked my way through about half the fillings with a fork. I passed on the white sauce because, from looking at the folks ahead of me, the counter folks were drowning the meats in it. A half cup of flavored mayo wasn't appealing. So I just got a light pass of the red sauce and dabbed on some of the baba ganoush for extra flavor/moisture on the chicken fillings. Very few toppings and they didn't look appealing. I thought it was a fair price for the amount of food, the meat flavor pretty good and it was pretty moist. The pitas (an extra came with the eggplant) were soft and fresh but they had a slightly raw flour flavor to them still. The baba ganoush was nicely smokey flavored and light spiced. The sumac sprinkled on top had lost all its zing and was just red powder, no astringent bite left to it. I took about 2/3 of it home, as I had eaten all I wanted. It made a lovely side for red snapper & broccoli last night. Based on my visit, I think I didn't do a great job ordering, but I didn't think it was fabulous, either. Definitely much lower on my radar than Cava Grill.
  19. I put this in the Silver Diner restaurant thread as well, but Executive Chef Ype from Silver Diner will be on Chopped Tuesday, Feb. 14.
  20. Stopped in the Silver Diner in Springfield today for lunch. The place was busy, service was friendly and efficient. I got the lamb-spinach-feta burger. It comes with a side Greek salad (too heavy on the dressing) rather than fries. The burger itself I ended up eating with a knife and fork, as the bottom half of the bun was incomplete and then completely soaked through with juices, so impossible to use as a hand-held. A shame; it looked like a nice toasty brioche bun. The burger itself was cooked to medium as requested, and plenty of arugula on it but no spinach, and just a smattering of feta, although there was plenty of feta on the salad. It was also covered in griddled onions, which were delicious but pretty much drowned out much of the rest of the flavors of the burger. Oh, and also one anemic tomato slice which I pushed off to the side, and there were some pickle chips I could add if I wished. $13, which seemed a fair enough price. Oh, and Chef Ype, the executive chef for the chain, will be competing on Chopped on Tuesday, Feb. 14.
  21. Met a friend for dinner here last night. Only 2-3 tables taken when we arrived, about 6:00. By 6:30, it was packed. They have added wines to the menu, and you can order by the taste ($3), half glass ($5), full glass ($8) or bottle (most ran in the $30-$40 range). Someone with more knowledge than me would have to weigh in on the quality of choices. I got a glass of the gruner vertliner and was happy enough with my choice. Unfortunately, the service overall was really lacking. I ordered the tamarind spring rolls and lemongrass chicken vermicelli bowl, plus the wine, and my friend got a vermicelli bowl and a half glass of pinot grigio. The waiter took our orders without writing anything down, got our wine after checking with us 2 more times about what we wanted, wine-wise. The tamarind rolls never showed. A chicken banh mi did arrive solo and was sent away. And then the rest of the meal was delivered by someone else, our server never checking back to see if we needed anything else. When we got the check (from yet another person), at least only the items we actually ordered and received were on there. Overall as far as the food goes, the chicken was a tiny bit overdone, and although it was sliced for presentation, nothing was sliced through completely, which makes eating with chopsticks and no knife difficult. The spicing was tasty and the salad/herbs in the bowl were nice and fresh, and the noodles cooked well.
