  1. This is absolutely bizarre to me: http://www.fizzyfruit.com/BusinessFrontPage.htm Carbonated fruit in a jar. To quote SNL Celebrity Jeopardy's Nic Cage, "Who? What? Why..... ????????"
  2. Komi Dino I know, I know, it's like why not already? Well, I budget for great dinners out, my friends for other things. Dinners alone at wonderful places- not always so fun. I love sharing food
  3. Note: Trader Joe's carries frozen organic blueberries (and other berries) and they're great! Also the good thing about frozen berries in plain yogurt is that the juices release in the microwave, so they get swirled in the yogurt. Yum!
  4. For the Del Ray restaurants, are these metro accessible? If so I'm in for Los Tios!
  5. Jonny, I am so there with you. Seriously. I am running a non-profit now, one that I wouldn't be running except that when my boss up and moved to Europe in August, our staff of two became a staff of one. I am desperately seeking to get into the gourmet/wine/cooking industry. I love talking, writing, discussing food and wine. I love planning menus and events. As soon as I'm done with this god-awful 800 person Gala in Feb., I am OUTTA here. Maybe back to France... but definitely where my heart is. Life's too short to spend it with your mind in one place and your heart in another... Brett
  6. Because juice doesn't have the natural fiber that is in the flesh of the fruit, so the sugar is concentrated.
  7. What exactly is the DC Cru? (And yes I get the pun)
  8. Pardon this perhaps ignorant question, but is soy sauce as present an ingredient in Korean cooking as it is in Chinese or Japanese cuisine (ie most sauces, glazes, dressings)?
  9. What's behind it is eating simple carbs alone- these raise your blood sugar incredibly. If combined with protein and/or fiber (ie having oatmeal with milk, or high fiber cereal with yogurt) your body will digest and absorb the sugars in the carbs more slowly. Bottom line- glycemic index. Stay away from refined carbs and sugar, and you will feel fuller longer, without a sugar crash. White flour has the same effect as simple sugar on the bloodstream.
  10. I was walking up 18th St. NW yesterday, and noticed the renovation of a storefront just past Mandu. The awning is pink and reads Cherry (or Cherry Hill, can't remember exactly), and announces a new sushi bar/ Japanese restaurant. Interesting! No opening date posted. Anyone know anything about this?
  11. His website is hilarious! (And he's actually kinda cute, too )
  12. Anyone for a happy hour tomorrow night in honor of MLK Jr day? I'm thinking Mimi's or 21P. Would love to meet members, finally.
  13. Posh is Posh Dining Club, new um, dining club in DC. I guess the owners have created a myspace profile, and they have requested to be my "friend".
  14. Went to Oceanaire tonight with friends, having been there quite a few times before. As always, the fish was excellently prepared and delicious. Only complaint- absolutley no vegetables served with the food, so I ordered steamed asparagus. Cost- $12. About $1/stalk. I think thats a bit ridiculous. Also, Posh has tried to be my "friend" 'on myspace more than once. Sad.
  15. I apologize. I'm embarassed and putting my foot in my mouth. I was using that fact as a disclaimer, because I am very interested in food and cooking, as well as fitness and nutrition, and wanted to participate in the discussion. I am sorry if I alienated anyone; my intention was the opposite.
  16. Wow that just reminded me of something i used to love- fritos dipped in butterscotch pudding. Tried on a dare. But oh, the rewards...
  17. I have never been overweight, but at my heaviest was a good 15lbs more than I am now (they don't call it the freshman 15 for nothing right), and this is the best advice I can offer. Eating well and light, whatever "plan" or method you follow, shouldn't be looked at as a diet. Diets are temporary. It should be a lifestyle, a way of eating. I could never go back to eating the fried foods I used to eat, or the creamy salad dressings. The thought of them turns me off... I don't miss fatty cuts of meat because I never ate that to begin with. There are so many wonderful foods out there that are absolutely delicious and healthy. And once you wean yourself off of anything, the cravings for it will go away. On a side note, and this may just because I'm an allergic freak and have a weird GI tract, but I ate some fries and red meat after not having done so for years, and got pretty ill from that...
  18. If your gut feeling is telling you this guy is creepy... he most likely is and you maybe should do carry out. If, on the other hand, you don't feel threatened, make an anonymous call to the manager of the restaurant and perhaps mention that you had an uncomfortable encounter with his otherwise lovely delivery man, who shouldn't be fired but might need to be spoken to regarding his um, invasion of your personal space.
  19. It actually took me awhile to buy a bottle of olive oil because of the high fat content, though it is the monounsaturated fat which is good for you. Of course, very light hand on everything... but what do you suggest using instead? Actually last night i roasted some eggplant with salt, black pepper, garlic and some crushed red pepper... deeelish
  20. I'm sure it does. But I'm a little wary to try it in case of gaining weight (I don't need to lose).. I am also a diet coke fiend. But I've never drinken regular soda, anyway.
  21. Just went for a run through Rock Creek to the P St. Starbucks (skim latte as my end incentive). Love going for long walks (not just on the beach ) but don't have a dog myself, so if anyone is looking for a fellow walker or someone to take their pooch out, let me know! As for cooking veggies... this may not be gourmet, but I tend to just steam in the microwave or roast in the oven with a bit of olive oil and different spices. Also, a little low fat cheese can go a long way. I also will use chicken or veggie broth instead of oil if I am stir-frying or sauteeing- it allows the heat to spread evenly throughout the pan and imparts some flavor and moisture without adding any fat. Balsamic vinegar is also good like this on poultry, esp. once it reduces. Oh! And how could I forget wine- wine is a wonderful way to add flavor without fat.
  22. Yes- as well as Purdue chicken nuggets with the cheese inside. Oh wow- that with Velveeta mac n cheese was a delicious, ignorance-is-bliss staple of my adolescence. (PS I am trying not to triple space on my replies, please let me know if this works)
  23. Currently - as in right now- James and his pizza are being featured on NBC4 Wednesday's Child feature. Seems like a nice guy!
