  1. Large diet coke, light on the ice. I must always have fountain diet coke at the movies. stomach ache inducing.........

Ok, thank you to squisdc who so graciously offered transportation, and those who identified their offerings as allergen-free (though from the list it seems like i'll be more boozed up than anything, but oh well). I'm in, and put me down for some sort of cracker. May be exceptionally healthy- a la my flaxbread foccacia, which i loooove- or the new southwest flatbreads at TJ's <-- the closest emoticon to embarrassment! But I love that stuff and it's allergen free so.. Or maybe home-made pita chips? And guac.... hmmm... Anyone roasting a bird?
  3. I am morally opposed to Chili's, as well as Uno's, because there are about 3 things on the entire menu that can be consumed without fear of allergy induced anaphylaxis. (Uno's has, well, nothing that I can consume. Same goes for Cosi.) The reason I say morally opposed is because of the blatant misrepresentation of their menu items and ingredients. I should be able to eat the plain chicken or steamed vegetables. Scan the actual ingredients and nutritional statements for these items at most chain restuarants, and you'll find that things are seldom what they seem....
  4. I make soy-free soy sauce. Yes, you read that correctly (I'm allergic to soy). I take some Vegemite or Marmite- which is very salty to begin with- disolve in boiling water. Add some chicken broth or mushroom broth- I prefer water that's been used to re-hydrate shitake mushrooms. It gives the sauce the umami factor otherwise supplied by the soy. Then a splash of red wine and some salt. Voila- sashimi time!
  5. I'm glad there's a newbie welcoming committee. I'd like to attend the picnic, but, as an allergic freak, I'm scared I won't be able to eat anything, and I don't want to annoy everyone day of the picnic hounding them about ingredients. So, if anyone is making anything that does NOT contain the following, will you let me know? I'd really appreciate a heads up: Sesame, soy (including soybean oil- read mayo, dressings, etc), carrots (veg. broth/mirepoix is tricky here), stringbeans, chickpeas, nuts Also anyone else live in the District and know of a good way to get down to Ft. Hunt? ETA: Perhaps i should be more direct, and proactive and ask if anyone has room in their car? Much appreciated!

  7. all I can offer on this place is that it used to be Pane Vino, and what I saw of it then wasn't anything to write home about.. I stopped in there once and interviewed for a hosting position- are they still owned by Restaurant Associates?
  8. never heard of the place... Also sometimes you don't want conversation from others, just to sit at the bar and enjoy your drink and the atmosphere. In which case the TV provides a distraction- not necessarily a personality vaccuum!
  9. I concur with Pat- as a woman (and CNN addict) it can be a nice place to let your gaze fall. Especially when CNN is on with CC and you just want to chill with your glass of wine. I think I may have just inadvertantly revealed my favorite watering hole...
  10. Stopped by Dino last night for happy hour with a co-worker. Dean graciously stopped by our table to recommend and tell us about Wednesday's wine flight. I absolutely adored the whites that I tasted, especially the "Christ's tears" (can't recall the Italian name). We shared the appetizer of roasted garlic with gorgonzola and tomato mostarda. Heaven. The plump golden raisins and stewed tomatos in the sauce made it extra delectable. All in all another great Dino experience. My one critique would be an error in service, or at least what I perceived to be. There was a piece of cork in my colleague's wine glass. When we alerted the bus boy and asked for a new glass, he simply returned with a clean glass and proceeded to transfer the same wine into the new glass. Yes, he did make sure the piece of cork stayed in the old glass, and my colleague didn't mind, but as a former server and someone who frequently dines out I would think an entirely new pour of the wine would have been appropriate, particularly since it was a 3 oz tasting.
  11. Bruno Ungaro, the chef that taught me to cook with all senses in Aix-en-Provence. My allergist, for telling me what I can and can't eat healthfully- thus forcing me to experiement.
  12. I guess I meant binder (though who wants a crabcake that's mostly filler anyway). And I should have clarified "lard" as heavy amounts of butter, cream, or other fatty substance...not lard. But isn't grease, used to fry crab cakes, considered lard?
  13. Does anyone know of a good place in the District that makes broiled/baked crabcakes without filler? Or, at least, without mayo? I'm allergic to soybean oil- big ingredient in commercial mayo- and not a huge fan of fat/lard in general.

  15. I prefer movie then dinner to dinner then movie. Have had a wonderful evening in Georgetown, beginning with (bad) movie, then dinner at Piccolo, followed by wine at Finomundo (since closed, I believe). Also Mie N Yu has a great ambiance if you go on a weeknight when it's not as crowded, and get good drinks and apps. Or wine tasting at Vidalia? A stroll along the White House/ OEB at sunset, for great photos, on the way to dinner on Penn? What about a champagne picnic on the steps of the Lincoln? Just for DC kicks.   18. Sure.. in bottom of salad bowl mix spoonful dijon mustard, vinegar.. whisk in salt (will help oil absorb), pepper, then olive oil. Add other spices to taste- ie Herbes de Provence, tarragon
