lperry
Last night: Grilled portobellos filled with feta, sun dried tomatoes, and pistachios. Finely shredded napa cabbage in a tarragon vinegar, dijon, honey, walnut oil dressing. I wanted Savoy cabbage and settled for the mild napa. It worked quite well. Athena cantaloupe from NC. A bit watery, but I suppose that's to be expected. Tonight: Caponata using a combination of Mary Ann Esposito's and Fine Cooking's recipes. I used some tomato paste and the cocoa powder. Wonderful. I had other things planned, but this one got tasted in the pan and we ate it on crackers until we couldn't eat any more. NC peaches with cognac for dessert. monavano
^ That Bo Ssam is amazing, isn't it. I made it for the most recent DR picnic, guided by the local Bitten Word blog. Exceedingly easy, yet the result works on so many levels. Tonight was turkey pizza burgers and steamed broccoli. Jenni-O is my best friend some days. lperry
A layered "salad" of sorts. Quinoa and a little foxtail millet (pantry cleaning) with feta in a balsamic vinaigrette, topped with piles of Sungold and chocolate cherry tomatoes marinated in evoo and sel gris, all covered in a fluffy mound of Genovese and lemon basil chiffonade. All produce from the garden, which is cranking out a pint of cherry tomatoes every day. Summer happiness.
thistle
Very plain 'Mediterranean' sort of dinner- micro-browned chicken breasts (don't hate people, the leftovers stay pretty moist & my microwave is dying, I'm using it 'til it dies)w/ sumac, garlic, sherry vinegar-lentils, cooked w/ scallions & pork broth-tomato/eggplant sauté, w/ garlic, scallions, olives...(my son told me I need to stop using ellipses, it looks silly, so I'm swearing off from here). monavano
^ (don't hate on this one too ) Tonight was a stupid simple chicken dish, brought to you by Kraft. It's just seasoned chicken breasts, coated with mayo and sprinkled with Parmesan cheese and baked in the oven. My version adds Penzy's Herbs de Parisian and Herbs de Provence (instead of bread crumbs). It comes out so moist with the mayo coating, and the herbs deepen in flavor as it cooks. It's really good! lperry
Grilled portobello mushrooms filled with sun dried tomatoes, feta, chopped almonds, and thyme. Romaine and Sungold tomatoes in a tarragon vinaigrette. Cantaloupe and peaches, and a little amaretto may have made it into the peaches. Lemon verbena sorbet that wasn't finished until a few minutes ago. I used this recipe but weighed out 20 grams of leaves so it would be more consistently replicable, let the leaves steep in the syrup while it chilled, then strained it right before freezing, and the flavor is beyond words. If you have lemon verbena in your garden, make this. Really. Go make it. Make it right now.

Rieux
Cleaning out the fridge before vacation: stuffed peppers from my in-laws' farm with ground lamb cooked with pine nuts, tomatoes, mint, cumin, allspice, sumac and some goat cheese and breadcrumbs. Baked them for a while with some steam in the oven, and threw a quick mix of Greek yogurt, dill, and water on them when they came out. Served with green beans we picked at the in-laws, which were braised with tomatoes from the garden, onion, water, red wine vinegar. All delicious, and I impressed myself by throwing this together instinctively, knowing when to stop (for example, i excluded the zucchini I was thinking of putting in the stuffing, and on reflection, this was a good idea- it would have expressed too much water).

I found it amusing when I realized that. The steak was from Union Meats in the market. The tortillas were from Canales. The cilantro and lime were from the Paiks' produce stand. The purple spring onions, tomatoes, hot pepper, and corn were from Tuesday outside farmer-vendors. Garlic, bell peppers, black beans, and mango were from Costco. Of course, some of the products sold by merchants at the market also probably come from Costco (the one thing I can think of is canned mushrooms--definitely the kind sold in bulk by warehouses.) So, I'm not sure what my point is *Salt from Whole Foods, pepper from Penzey's, chipotles and olive oil from Giant, and orange juice from Yes! organic.
