  1. BF and I tried out Tortacos tonight for Cinco de Mayo. We stuffed ourselves silly trying out all their taco varieties, including Al Pastor, Carnitas, Lengua (beef tongue), Asada, and Pollo. All of them were good but it was a pleasant surprise to have the lengua since it was not written on the board. You top the tacos at the self serve bar. They also offer tortas, burritos, quesadillas and sopes. Everything was really fresh. Even the guacamole and chips are homemade. I love that it is a family owned place instead of a chain. I thought it was a good sign that we were the only ones not speaking Spanish there. Two large family groups were eating in and there was a steady stream of carry out orders. They have nightly specials--tonight was $1 tacos. That is an amazing price for the quality of food we had. The street address is 9629 Lost Knife Road. It's at the corner of Lost Knife and Odenhal, in the same plaza as H Mart.
  2. I haven't been for dinner yet, nor ordered off the menu, but the $12 AYCE sushi buffet at lunch is spectacular. Very good fish, cut to an appropriate size with a good proportion of well vinegared rice. A very good selection of fish and rolls, far beyond the usual tuna/salmon/veggie selections. Constantly refreshed - it's a small place, yet 3 chefs were constantly making rolls, and I never saw a single empty tray on the buffet. A few cold/hot noodle dishes, salads, seaweed, etc. Also some pretty decent tempura, including shrimp that were a pretty good size. Price also includes tea and mushroom miso soup. No, this isn't Sushi-Ko/Kaz/etc. It's more like Kotobuki. But it's TWELVE DOLLARS. They lost money on me... P.S. Closed Mondays, no matter what the website says, and at 1:30p today there was a wait (albeit brief) for a table.
  3. Most of us know him as "the chef at Grapeseed who makes your hand disappear when you shake his," but in his previous life - which now must seem an eternity ago, Jeff played for one of the most legendary high school football teams in the history of the Washington, DC area, the dynastic Seneca Valley Screaming Eagles of Germantown, MD, who hold a record 12 Maryland State High School Football Championships, even though the school opened fairly recently in 1974. During Heineman's time at Seneca Valley, they won the Class A State Championship his freshman and sophomore years, 1979-1980 and 1980-1981, going undefeated at 12-0 his sophomore season. Heineman was listed as 6'4", 275, and was a two-way starter, at Center and Offensive Tackle on offense, and Defensive Tackle on defense (whew!) He was All-County in the Montgomery Journal (since absorbed into the Washington Examiner). He was an Honorable-Mention All-Met in the Washington Post, and was named one of the Top 100 Linemen in the Nation in USA Today, as well as being named one of George Michael's "Golden 11" Football Players (here's an example with the 2006 list). He is in the Seneca Valley Athletic Hall of Fame, and was recognized as the Best Defensive Lineman at Seneca Valley in the 1982-1983 season. However, his football career was not yet over. Oct 11, 1986 - "Unlikely Indians: 4-0 and No. 5" by Neil H. Greenberger on washingtonpost.com With Heineman a four-year starter at defensive tackle (he started one game his freshman year), the William & Mary Tribe in Williamsburg, VA was an NCAA Division I-AA Independent school during his tenure, but they made the Division I-AA Playoffs for the first time in school history, in Dec, 1986, his final season, with only 16 teams in the country qualifying - they ran into a juggernaut, losing to the University of Delaware in the first round, 51-21, but their football program was founded in 1893, and Heineman's squad broke a 93-year drought of no post-season football. I suspect the win over the University of Richmond, one week before, in what was then known as the "I-64 Bowl," (now called the Capital Cup) was Heineman's sweetest, with the Tribe defeating the Spiders on their own turf for Heineman's final football victory of his career. Heineman's athletic career was still not over after football, however, as he dropped 30 pounds and became an international rugby player. After his football career in college, Heineman played Club Rugby, and was named All-East Coast in 1988. He then moved to New Zealand, and made the All-Province Team playing Second Row (that's a position) for North Otago in 1990-1991. I suppose at some point he realized he was going to have to work, and so after stints in various restaurants, he opened Grapeseed in 2000, and they just celebrated their 16th anniversary last week, on Thursday, Apr 7, 2016. Congratulations, Jeff, on having wedged two very successful lifetimes into one.
  4. Eastern Kabob & Sweets is located in the Sugarloaf Shopping Center in Germantown. They have a buffet all the time, but I haven't tried it yet. Each of the last two times I have visited I ordered chapli. Each time it was amazing. The first time I got the beef and my friend got the chicken. Both were good, but the beef was better. It had a nice char on it which added an additional layer of flavor. The dish comes with two "patties" on a bed of rice, with shaved onion on top. The platter also comes with so stewed chickpeas and naan. It is a BARGAIN at $11.99. There is a ton of flavor in the chapli. The rice is also well seasoned and slightly spicy. Each time I ordered the dish spicy, but the heat was a bit restrained--that's okay because it was packed with flavor. As far as decor goes, it is bright and clean, with some flat screens playing Pakistani videos. The staff is nice enough. They also have some disco lights going. They are open late Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
  5. Hello Board, Tomorrow night I am taking my Mom to Germantown to test drive a car. We likely can do a quick dinner before or a more leisurely dinner afterwards. What is good in this area of town or on 270 south of Germantown (we are coming from NOVA)? Mom is pretty adventurous and likes ethnic cuisine. We are also fine with general purpose (pizza, etc) but I prefer not to have to do a big chain or fast food because we have been on the road a lot lately.
  6. After my 3rd visit to this haven of Thai cuisine, I am prepared to declare Sabai Sabai Simply Thai the best Thai restaurant in Montgomery County. Bold words, but try it, and I think you'll be a believer. My wife & I were thrilled to discover that Sabai took over the space formerly occupied by the somewhat lackluster (in our experience) French Quarter Cafe. The interior is tasteful and stylish, somewhat surprising for G-town, and a refreshing alternative to the psychedelic-under-the-sea-outer-space theme that's become de rigueur at quite a few regional Thai outposts. Service is friendly, and the wait staff is knowledgeable about the menu, and happy to offer recommendations. But it's the food that'll knock your socks off. Sure, they've got solid and flavorful presentations of the standards: Pad Thai, Drunken Noodles, Kra Pow, etc, but the menu offers quite a few surprises. 1/2 of it is "Simply Thai Classics," while the other 1/2 is "Very Thai Street Fare." According to the servers, everything is fresh and made in-house. So far, with the exception of a "meh" serving of "Jungle Curry," everything has been phenomenal...and at times, approaches Lotus of Siam level, IMHO. (The biggest disappointment is the absence of LoS's legendary crispy rice appetizer.) That aside, the Spicy Catfish (with crispy basil and perfectly prepared Thai eggplant), Pad Prik Khing, and Basil Pork Crisp have all been killer entrees, and the Thai beef jerky, Kanom Jeeb (with skins that taste like fresh pasta from il Pizzico), and Street Style Grilled Pork (OMG) apps are all solid bets. It's the kind of place that's had us giddily planning our next meal, while savoring every bite...joyous Asian gluttony. As a denizen of the G-spot (as I prefer to call it...makes Germantown sound edgy and exciting), I couldn't be more thrilled to have such a fantastic Thai restaurant just across 270. Cheers, Scott
  7. I can't seem to find a thread on Tasty Garden so I thought I would start one. Located at the corner of 355 and Middlebrook Road (in the strip center opposite Yuraku). They have roasted meats which have all been above average. Tanks with fish, lobster, eel, crab, etc. I have tried a variety of dishes here, but the roasted chicken with crispy garlic and steamed fish (from the tank) are standouts. The fish was cooked perfectly, simply seasoned, but very tasty. Another standout is the shrimp dumpling soup. The broth in this soup is magical. I have been about 4 times and really want to keep coming back and work through the menu. The owner has always been there when I am there and is warm and willing to suggest items.
  8. La Tagliatella is supposed to open this Monday, April 1, in Clarendon in the 3 Bar and Grill location. The menu is posted here on their website. It has a wide selection of mix and match pastas and sauces as well as pizzas and other items. I'll reserve judgment and give it a try first. (The website also says wifi is available at Clarendon.) According to its website: La Tagliatella, is owned by AmRest Holding SE (AmRest, WSE); the largest operator of independent restaurants in Central and Eastern Europe with more than 700 restaurants. We have more than 135 La Tagliatella restaurants globally in Europe, Asia, India and the US. There will also be a location where Extra Virgin in Shirlington was.
  9. After reading Tim Carman's review of Pinks Cafe Afrikoko, my appetite and curiosity were whetted and I just had to try this place. It's tucked away in a small strip mall in Germantown, just a few minutes from my office. I went there, ordered three dishes, and came away thinking that someone had pulled a fast one on me. I ordered the chicken kebab ($5) to eat in while waiting for my take out orders. For $5, I figured I'd be getting a nice, lunch portion of something. What I got was two skewers of tough chicken that had been covered with a tomato based sauce and sprinkled with a dusting of spices. Nothing else. The chicken tasted like it had precooked and then popped in the microwave (what was that *bing* noise I heard just a minute before my meal was brought out to me?). There was no way the chicken had actually been cooked IN the sauce. Rather, it was just poured on. The sauce was blander than what I had imagined. The pieces of meat that were dusted with the spices didn't taste discernibly different from those that weren't. On top of that, I began to feel nauseous within 15 minutes of finishing and spent the next few hours in and out of the commode. For take out, I essentially ordered what I hoped would be enough for a nice dinner for two. I got a steamed vegetable stew ($7 - the menu said "with banku or rice") and then a beef and rice dish ($10). I was a little surprised to find that they had charged me an extra $3 for the banku (what DOES it mean when it says the dish is served WITH an item?). Oh, well...whatever. Got home to find out the vegetable dish was....frozen mixed vegetables (you can't mistake those machine cut veggies for anything else). They had been steamed and given the once over with a pepper grinder. For $7??? WTF? The one and only saving dish was the beef and rice dish (go figure - it's the one thing I can't remember the name of). While it was a little oily and the heat came predominantly from black pepper, the meat itself was very tender and the sauce had a flavour. It was great to dip some of the banku in the sauce. So - I (think I) got overcharged, got a bit sick, and went one for three on the meals. And yet, I'll still give them one more shot, seeing as how Carman was so positive on it. Maybe they knew he was a food writer and helped them with their decisions. I can't feel that we just didn't get our money's worth.
  10. Whenever we need emergency HVAC services it always seems to be in the middle of the night or on a Sunday. I found Germantown Services during one such calamity in July of 2010 when we awoke on a Sunday morning at 2:00 am to the sound of water cascading from the ceiling. As soon as dawn broke I began calling repair services and Scott Sadler from Germantown responded immediately, despite the fact that we had no prior relationship with him. He was there within the hour and fixed the problem quickly at a very reasonable price. Since then, we have had reason to call him on 3 other occasions, most of which have been on the weekend, and he has responded promptly, fixed the problem to our satisfaction, and the fees were always lower than expected. Not only is he very efficient and competent, Scott is also a very nice guy. We wouldn't dream of using any other HVAC service.
