  1. So many DR members have stayed in the Glascock room (us too!). Funny to think most of us have never met, but we've all shared a bed!
  2. Wow. What a meal! We went tonight at 5:30 before Anything Goes (see the show!, it's great) and it was already half full. We had almost the same meal as dcandohio. We started with the corn, mint, prosciutto plate and the tomatoes. Both were delicious, nicely plated with edible flower petals, and tasted like summer. We then split the gnocchi with duck, which was heavenly with light gnocchi and a robust sauce with hints of either citrus or apple - my partner and I disagreed which flavor it was, but we agreed we loved it (and the dish came out already divided on two plates, a nice touch). I had the branzino with tomatoes, olives, and fennel, and my partner had the monkfish. Both were great and we couldn't figure out which one we liked better, although I have to say the artichokes with the monkfish were amazing. I had a glass of the Pinot Grigio, and it was crisp and a good foil for the food. For dessert we had gelato: pistachio, caramel, and burnt honey. Very good, but not the best I've ever had. Service was great, and impressive for the second night of being open. They heard my offhand comment about going to the theatre, and checked in several times to make sure that the pacing was right. Not too fast, bust brisk enough to get us out the door by 6:50 or so. The total was ridiculously low for food of this caliber at about $100 total + tip. (They are having 10% off all food for the first month they are open, but it was so good and already such a good deal, it's not even necessary). Go. Now. This is going to become an impossible reservation, and you will want to eat through the whole menu. I already want to play next trip back. I work nearby, so this should become a good "meeting friends for a nice lunch" place. Reading this, it sounds like I am in love with my new favorite Italian joint in town....
  3. Decided to try Casa Luca. Marcel's didn't work out, an d figured I'd try Casa Luca before it gets mobbed!
  4. This carrot pie from Home Made Summer. (I have the book, but this blog has posted the recipe) With a green salad. Yum. http://www.loveandflour.com/sides/carrot-goat-cheese-quiche
  5. Saida Cunningham is the best masseuse I have ever visited. Friendly, calming, and knowledgeable, she is a real therapist who can work deep tissue, trigger point, etc. She treats you like a friend and patient, and actually keeps written records of each visit, what was tight, etc. and refers back to them before your next appointment. Best of all, her rates are really reasonable, a 90-minute massage is just $95 and she does not accept tips. Office is right across from the entrance to the zoo. 6. I have been seeing Dr. O'Leary for ten years. His office is clean, his staff is great (both the receptionist and the dental assistants), and he is a nice, thorough Dentist. The best I have ever seen. A big plus is that his office reminds me of a family-run dentist office you would see in a small town, but it's right in DC near Sibley. He also uses electronic x-rays and records, which I appreciate. Only caveat, he is booked a month or so in advance because he is so good. 5840 MacArthur Blvd., NW Washington, DC. - (202) 966-8108 www.dennisolearydds.com Greg Watson
  7. Artisanal? Usually pretty good, large, and with enough buzz to keep things flowing. 34th and park, just a fe blocks from ESB.
  8. Just have not been or heard much about Ancora, but definitely interested in it!
  9. Going to the Kennedy Center for the first time in ages (to see Anything Goes, my favorite musical of all time!) on Saturday. I was told by my partner I am in charge of date night. Were should we go for pre-theater dinner? Curtain is at 7:30, so will probably go somewhere around 5:30 or so. I have never been to Marcel's (which is booked), Ris, Blue Duck. Rasika WE has no availability on open table, and the are closed, so I can't call today. Made a backup reservation at Ancora for 5:45 (which, I will cancel if we decide to go somewhere else, obviously -- I am not that guy.) Should we keep Ancora? Try for something else? Would like to keep to $50-60 pp + tax/tip or so with main, app, a glass of wine.
  10. I think I saw these at the Harris Teeter in Kalorama a few months ago. Not sure if they still have them.
  11. I thought the same thing. While I love a good Arepa, the fact that they are coming from a nominally Mexican place gives me great pause. Plus, this location is a block from the Inter-American Development Bank (where I work) - you can bet that the people who work here know where Arepas come from and will be none too pleased that they are being called Mexican! (On a side note, for good empanadas, and rotating latin food, try to get an invite to the IDB cafeteria. Some of the food is dreck, but as they rotate through countries and cuisines, there are some truly great latin foods coming out of the kitchen. And the Pao de Queijo at breakfast is as good as any you'd get in Brasil.)
  12. Domku has remodeled. Really nice new banquettes (no more couches) and chairs (love the fabric they used), a cool partition between the bar and restaurant. Dinner Friday was nice, with good service, good drinks and aquavit (I think the dill is best) and fine food. The beet buttermilk soup was great. The schnitzel and pierogi were good, but made better with some salt. It did seem that all the food needed some salt at the table, so maybe they are consciously trying to keep it low, figuring people can add more. A lovely, unique place in DC whose existence makes me happy.
  13. I just remembered two more: a friend of mine in Ireland, Enda Story; and, a friend of my ex in Mexico. She was a lovely Swedish with the first name of Viva. She married a guy with the last name Zapata, in Mexico. She became Viva Zapata!
  14. My mom used to go to a Dr. Hyman Hunter. And I also have heard of a Dr. Hands.
  15. Have you ever seen this amazing sketch from the 90's MTV comedy show "The State"? http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/b8a4df31a1/porcupine-racetrack-by-the-state-from-greatest-comedy-sketches Every time I see your username I sing the Porcupine Racetrack song.
  16. I was obsessed with Camus' book "The Plague" in high school, and even wrote a college entrance essay about it, based on this quote "I'd come to realize that all our troubles spring from our failure to use plain, clean-cut language. So I resolved always to speak - and to act - quite clearly, as this was the only way of setting myself on the right track." (Still love the book and the existentialist theory in it, but have not re-read it in ages). One of the main characters is Dr. Rieux, and I thought that Rieux sounded cool and started using it as a screen name. I also like Paneloux, one of the other characters, as a name. Maybe it is the x at the end that I like.
  17. Someone beat MsDiPesto to it! http://jalopnik.com/5724684/virginia-dmv-revokes-worlds-greatest-license-plate Some language NSFW
  18. Sadly, as I mentioned above, I have had limited success with the hummus recipe from Jerusalem. If others succeed, please let me know what you do so I can replicate it! So far, for the time, effort, and result, I have come down on store-bought
  19. I just had the saltiest dish I have ever eaten at Woodward Table. I ordered a bibb salad (decent, if not exciting) and the "spring peas". The spring peas turned out to be pea shoots (basically leaves) with raisins and pine nuts. They were so oversalted I ate one bite and left the rest (which at $6 or so, seemed a waste). I like salty food, but, wow.
  20. Thanks so much! I think Dean should open an Italian travel/eating agency! Dino Italian Food tours... I see it....
  21. Dear all, Leaving for 12 days in Italy tomorrow -- 4 in Rome, 4 in Tuscany, and 4 in Venice. We are all set in Rome, as I have several Roman friends who have set us up with restaurants owned by their friends. On the drive from Rome to Tuscany we will probably stop in Orvieto for lunch -- suggestions in Orvieto welcome! In Tuscany we are staying near Asciano and will day trip to places like Siena, Chianti, etc. Last time I went, Dean Gold gave me great recommendations for places like Il Conte Matto in Trequanda, but I am wondering if there are new suggestions for good places to have a large nice lunch in Siena, the Chianti area, etc. For these 4 days we basically just want to drive to different towns/villages and wander, eat, and relax so we have no set itinerary. If there are specific wineries we should visit in the area, we are also open to these suggestions! Finally, any Venice recommendations would be welcome! This is a honeymoon trip, so we are happy to have a mix of less-expensive and more-expensive options.
  22. I have never eaten in Bethesda, and know nothing about restaurants there, but my brother was at a conference at NIH and wanted to meet close to his hotel. I chose Redwood solely because I had read that Antonio was there on this site. The meal was solid, and the experience good. Living in DC-proper, I LOVED that the restaurant let 2 of us sit at the table when we arrived a half hour early - no "full parties only" rule. It was great to sit near the window, have a glass of wine and relax as we waited for my brother and uncle. I was trying to be healthy in advance of a trip to Italy tomorrow so I went with the spring salad and the black pea hummus. The spring salad was GREAT with ramps, asparagus, beets, etc. I could have eaten two more. The hummus was also delicious and came with cornichon, fresh veggies, olives, in addition to the normal pita bread, which I appreciated. All the others had burgers which they liked. All in all, a lovely evening.
  23. We ended up at Layalina, and it was fantastic!
  24. I actually loved the lemon macarons from Macaron Bee, and really enjoyed the caramel ones. I was not as in love with the raspberry.
