  1. Does this have anything to do with adding "bull pizzle" to the menu? (don't haveany idea, but I couldn't resist.)
  2. Others have a better sense of how to organize comments, but here are some: --- Cab drivers will say "Are you SURE you want to go to that street?" --- The new Corduroy has no backdraft ale ... no room for kegs. --- It was good to see some of the favorites from before ... I had the roast lamb and spinach. --- The pineapple tart was wonderful. --- Rumor is that they will be open May 11 (Mother's Day). Closed Sundays, otherwise. --- Ferhat adjusting to his new role, not easy to supervise, rather than be hands on. --- Scott says the "items that need to be finished" checklist will be done by July 4.!
  3. Is it fancy dress? No one told me it was fancy dress.
  4. Nothing like going into the woods and getting laminated.
  5. I thought I was the only one who found that modern "non-stick" worked fine, so long as the first thing in the pan was "a lump of butter such as your thumb". I learned my klutz cooking using hand-me-down cast iron and some RevereWare pots from who knows where, so I'm a little fearful of the special care needed for the "good stuff". (my local sheriff had made me promise to be very, very careful).
  6. Was that you hiking into the wilderness with a throng of Boy Scouts, helping them earn their "Wilderness Survival" merit badges? Cooking equipment consisting only of a half dozen Sara Lee pie tins, a rusty hatchet, and a copy of the French Laundry cookbook? Now that is character building.
  7. The "soft opening" of the new Corduroy was amazing! Sorry you missed it. Sure, you can be 99.8% certain that this an April Fools, really lammo joke, but shouldn't someone go and check it out anyway?
  8. I don't know what is in the drink, the "Eliot Spitzer". It does involve something tangy from New York, though.
  9. Information that Ellwood Thompson's Market wants to open a store at Columbia Road and 14th Street. Not definitely going to happen, but more of a "yes, no, maybe" statement. Questions 1. Who is Ellwood Thompson's Market? 2. Would this store be a good thing? 3. Should I care if they open a store, or not? (yes, probably) Here is their web site: click (more info about Polyface Farms, and other Birkenstocker type stuff) ============================== What got me started on this is this message (they want your help getting this store!): AM group message Mostly, I know nothing. Really.
  10. Years ago, a good many, I was working as a waiter ... a customer wanted to speak to the manager ... I looked high and low for him ... finally saw him ... What was he doing coming out of a storage room with the "good looking guy" waiter, pulling up his pants? I was surprised that somehow out of this, I got to be the bad guy.Encouraged to find employment elsewhere. Whether the customer got to talk to the manager, I don't know.
  11. A little article in the Washington Business Journal says that Pete's Apizza is one of six restaurants opening in a building near 14th and Irving St. ... Sake Club, Potbelly, Five Guys, a Gastropub (?) by chef Jamie Leeds. Just enough information to cause trouble. Original article here: click
  12. I enjoy it all, including " A melange of Sysco lettuce, aged since last Thursday in our thermally stabilized storage unit". But then I am a word guy. It is a little weird when the menu says "Dry aged steak, yadda, yadda, yadda" and "Succulent Maine lobster, yadda, yadda, yadda" and the server says "surf and turf". Not that I have anything against Morton's.
  13. I stopped by the 18th Street location. Since the service is essentially DIY, the service sucked. Ever had a server who was new on the job? I mean really new? I mean "where are the knives and forks?" new? That was me. The food ... eh, I would go back if it was 95 degrees out, I was standing in front of the main entrance, and I needed a beer. As a kid, I was facinated by the Automat in NY (it was like buying a slice of pie from a vending machine). Maybe technology-fascinated kids would find Vapiano fun.
  14. To the fabulous (and I do mean marvelous) Hillvalley: Happy Birthday!
  15. The pattern has been established: consume many bottles of wine one night, return next night and complain that wine list has been brutally pillaged. The 'Smurf Piss' ... basically a Margarita, not bad, if you like that kind of thing. Those who expect the Hendrick's gin ... I wouldn't get my hopes up, considering the massive quantities consumed Monday night. Discussion where to get the best 'golden shower': inconclusive (thankfully). Surprised that Southern Comfort is on the special menu ($3?). The SC drinkers I've known have had exceptional capacity. The kitchen continues its excellent work, in spite of the rowdiness of the patrons. No duck egg salad, though.
  16. ... hilarity ensues. As I expected, the divine Ms. M will be pressed into service (no?). For a few days, ordering will be discouraged. You will take what's put in front of you, and like it (probably be good, though). We shall see. A self-service bar? When was the last you saw that? (free form speculation based on no facts what-so-ever)
  17. A team of linguists is attempting to determine if the 'special' in special menu means: 1) to use up whatever is leftover in the kitchen, or 2) something so unbelievably good that those who don't get a taste will howl at the injustice. Meanwhile, another team, these oenological clairvoyants ,are trying to determine how many bottles are left in the wine cellar, and the labels. Or I suppose we could just ask.
  18. Looks like Scott has been appointed (by acclamation) "Le Grand Fromage" for the picnic. Cheese Head hat optional.
  19. Chinese New Year is Feb. 7, 2008, the year of the Rat! So far I'm looking at doing a Hot and Sour Soup ... need Wood Ear mushrooms and lily buds. Anyone have more ideas?
