  1. By following the trail of corporate ownership, it can be shown the 3.7% of Don's thoughts on wine are actually written by advertising copywriters. This is actually a surprisingly low number, even less than the influence of the drip, drip, drip of wine opinion from the Robert Parker publicity stalactite directly above Don's head.
  2. The amount of comment on this subject could go on and on, but here are my two cents: --- the practice of dressing government clerks in judge's robes (to provide a little extra authority) is just silly . --- would it not be a trivial project to design parking meters that report (to Parking Central) every five minutes "Hey, I'm working!" (Some kind of wireless gadget). --- the DC government could sell a 24 hour "park in any legal space for as long as you want" pass, sold via internet, for $10. No need for little pieces of paper - - - tag number would just show up on meter ticket writers portable computer as "Do not ticket". That would be nice. (I would call it "Councilmember for a Day") DC Government sometimes does things which defy logic. This is just a fact of DC life.
  3. Happy Birthday to Xcanuck's close relative!
  4. I thought "gastropub" was medical librarian shorthand for "the Gastroenterology section of a medical library". As in: "Where do I put "A Treatise on the Merck Manual (14th ed.) Classification of Flatulence"?" "Park in Gastropub"
  5. What about specific gravity? I was looking forward to specific gravity!
  6. It's a special day, if you know what I mean (and I think you do): Happy Birthday, Hillvalley!
  7. Food truck rugby scrum today (1/10) at Franklin Square. for lunch. Cupcake fanatics and lobster crazies will converge. Ten vendors. Maybe this a permanent change in the DC lunch culture.
  8. Clam Chowder, really good. The cold weather may have added to the allure. Truck parked at 19th and L Street. Line about ten people long at 1:30. Maybe the novelty has worn off.
  9. For years, police patrolling the I-95 corridor knew that a car noticeably weighted down in back, driver wearing a sombrero, "South of the Border" sticker on bumper was not smuggling drugs but scoring some Blenheim. (No triple spacing, yeah!).
  10. Are commercial ginger beer and ginger ale made with ginger? Or maybe made with imitation wasabi and other assorted flavor elements? I would think this would not be high on the list for imitation flavor designers. Could be wrong.
  11. Arena Stage has a new home in SW DC, not directly across from the fish market. Real name: Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater (!). Dinner at the cafe there, Next Stage by José Andrés. I think this production, Oklahoma, is the first production at this building . Someone thought the menu of the cafe should tie in with the current production. I will let the idea of José Andrés drawing inspiration from the traditional foods of Oklahoma speak for itself. State Bird Wild Turkey Noodle Soup free range wild turkey, carrots, onion, celery. At least the noodles were added at service, so they didn'y get mushy. Chicken Slaw Salad spinach stuffed chicken, shredded cabbage, cheese and buttermilk and herb dressing. OK, but too cold. 36-Hour Short Ribs slow cooked in a red wine sauce. Probably the best thing on the menu. Potato Puree with American Idaho potatoes (!) Yes, well ... Oklahoma Succotash black-eyed peas, okra, squash and bacon. Good or inedible, depending on likes or dislikes of ingredients. Red Velvet Cupcakes with Cream Cheese filling. Plenty sweet. half-bottle 2007 Catena Merlot ($28) (!) Umm.... I will leave the review of the theatrical event itself to someone else.
  12. . Crap! I knew I should have read the DR.com EULA.
  13. Happy Birthday, Mr. SJ's +1! Have a wonderful day. Yes, we love you. Now get back to work.
  14. Bethesda location, 9th Street Italian: better than Subway (one block away)?. Yes. Better than Vace (three blocks away)? Not in my opinion.
  15. To F. Scott Fitzgerald, birthday Sept. 24, why not make a weekend of it?
  16. To Morrie Yohai, inventoin the of the Cheez Doodle. He passed away at age 90. The glow-in-the-dark snackfood Hall of Fame would be nothing without him. The orange fingers were a small price to pay.
  17. Some species of fish will be permitted to survive because they contain too much mercury to eat. How sick is that.
  18. Lustau Solera Superior sherry. Feel like a suspect in an Agatha Christie novel.
  19. Another chapter in the book "How to Win Friends and Influence People With Meat." A book starring ... well you know.
  20. ML advertising budget (ever): zero.
  21. [quote name='hillvalley' date='07 June 2010 - 09:52 PM' timestamp='1275961966' post='165359' ]I'm tired of asparagus. Hand me my fainting couch!

Surprised no mentions of 'Shell Games' by Craig Welch. I am interested but haven't read it yet. It is mostly about the illegal geoduck business. At least it would offer a chance to ask (again) "How is Don Rockwell like a Pacific Coast clam?"
  23. A friend insists that the third letter in "pho" need an umlaut. The Vietnamese don't speak German, do they?
