  1. Don, 29? LOL! as if. scusa. Happy Birthday, Don.
  2. "Tomatoes?" (to paraphrase Dr. Freud). Parts of you needing to be relaxed, stiff? Other parts more, um. relaxed than desired? Fruits not up to standard? Sounds more like the results of a crapulent lifestyle. Really, I don't think you have blight. Could be, but highly unlikely.
  3. Market only has a few vendors. Main topic of conversation, difficulty of parking at Dupont Market. Meatcrafters had samples of their products, Keilbasa, that New Orleans sausage I can't spell, brats, lamb merguez, dc halfsmokes. Halfsmokes, I don't see the attraction. Got some merguez to look forward to. As mentioned elsewhere, few veggies. Some of the vendors do seem to be 'serious amateurs," the ones I'm find most interesting.
  4. Some of the bartending schools work in a particular way, using ersatz liquor, which is much cheaper than the real stuff. This also allows the schools to accept students of any age. Also, the instructors are often professional bartenders who need to take some time to, um, dry out.
  5. Have you ever just returned from a long visit with the Carthusian monks, and needed to let loose a good screed? I thought so. Some of you probably thought the writer was George Will, whilst experimenting with the special mushrooms the local kids sell on the street corner. Not so. It's just too good. And George Will would never say "hairy eyeball". I was going to mention something about the guy who wears the incredibly shmatte brick red suit, who is seen in all the best places. But what is the point?
  6. Does Bistro d'Oc have the highest expection/reality disappointment number of any restaurant in DC? If not at the top, probably close to it.
  7. Does a shorts and t-shirt wearing family have the right to demand shorts and t-shirt prices? I think they do.
  8. I expect this is as close as ML's meat is going to get to Paris Hilton, but who knows? Will we see POTUS wearing a "Ray's Hell-Burger" tee shirt? This is so not happening, that it definitely will happen. Does BO have ML's private cell phone number? Maybe. (getting really breathless here!)
  9. Someday I will hear some server, in all seriousness say "our sommelier recommends the stemless stemware." I will plotz.
  10. Los Angeles food cart vendors use twitter to market to foodie customers. Will DC workers be wasting even more time checking food cart tweets to see who has what? http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090515/ap_on_..._twitter_trucks It's all to tech for me.
  11. In ML's address book, we can be pretty sure that "W. House" stands for "White House" can't we? (maybe Landrum would like to open a place at the Watergate).
  12. Landrum passes Secret Service background check? Bad boy? no, pussycat.
  13. Been to www.robertodonna.com lately? Covered in dust. Particularly chef's blog.
  14. Swine producers are seeing a reduction of sales because of fear of swine flu (or "grippe porcine", as I prefer). We can help revive the slumping economy by eating more bacon. A half remembered quote from a spokesperson of the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy "the only way to save endangered livestock breeds is to eat them" (no, not all of them ... buying some will encourage farmers to raise more). Wine producers need for us to drink more (a little tiny bit more). Yes, it's a plan. Might even work. I'm willing to try.
  15. Eating things past their expiration date is on the 'food machismo' list (I don.t know the feminine equivalent). Other items on the list: - very rare roast beef - caesar salad with raw egg - oysters harvested by sleazy friend - liquor (moonshine?) from unlabeled jar. - mountain oysters The list is endless. With canning, if something looks OK, and smells OK it probably is. The risk of botulism is low. The government, however, would not approve. I had a friend who would take a bite out of a beer glass, then spit it out. Very impressive. He was dreadfully afraid of bacon past its expiration date.
  16. Available at the Big Hunt. I just like the name.
  17. Now that Starbucks has lost its cachet, going there is quite alright. Kind of like visitingthe local dive bar, only a coffee bar. A guilty pleasure. Some Starbucks location maintain a certain hipitude. But most not. If they can hold on ... who knows?
  18. The first week of March is much too early to think about gardens. If you were planning an herb garden, what would you include?
  19. Gordon Ramsay could bring Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares here. Really.I suspect there is some good cooking to be found, but it is elusive.
  20. Dotage? Dotage? Not likely ... dotage doesn't start until age 51. Besides, Iknow dozens of people more dotage than Waitman. Maybe not dozens. Some, anyway.
  21. shot an elephant in my pajamas ...
  22. "Roulade taxonomy" ... I thought "taxidermy". Taxidermy is "skin arrangement", so I give myself half credit.
