  1. Try the obscure duck! Kliman does indeed speak of the restaurant to which I allude. I'd go more into it, but I'm shnockered after a rehearsal dinner and beat. He's right-- stay away from the stir fries and delve deeply into the curries. Also, step up to the four-burner stove and chat with the man as he makes your meal. This jaunt into the hood is well worth it. Some dishes blow what I've ever had before in the DC area out of the water. Too many Thai places just throw some chicken, ginger, galanga, and lime leaves into a wok and say, badabing, this is Thai. F them. Thai X-ing is Thai!
  2. Homemade vanilla ice cream. But only if made in an ice cream maker that was brought over on the Mayflower.
  3. When I lived in Shirlington many moons ago, I enjoyed their carryout as well. There was a typo on the takeout menu at the time for their thin cigar shaped egg rolls-- "crippy rolls". I always got them, just because I enjoyed saying "crippy" instead of "crispy".
  4. The two guys sitting right next to your blonde friend. We left while you were still there. We should have some sort of secret gesture to perform every 5 mins or so to announce ourselves to other folks who are "in the know". Vigorous nose-picking is probably not a good one, huh?
  5. I think you were sitting right next to my and my buddy at the bar. You were over on the right hand side of the bar, right? New bartender. Her take on the Palena Manhattan was a little sweeter than usual, but still quite good. And a mean Negroni was had too. No food for us tonight as we ate at 2 Amy's.
  6. It's been a while since I've been, but the burger at Southside 815 in Old Town is great. Juicy as all get out, usually cooked exactly as you request, and the fries are damn decent. My only complaint is that there isn't a bleu cheese option.
  7. Rinsing removes a lot of the starch-- the one thing that makes rice sticky. Other than the above, I have no advice. Well, maybe a little. Use a little too much water, and cook it a little longer than you would on higher heat. But you have to get a real feel for it so as not to burn it. I can pull it off maybe 3 out of 10 times satisfactorily.
  8. I'm STILL angry about my one experience at Park Cafe from almost a year ago. It fucking sucks! I don't know how they even stay in business. It rarely has a crowd, and anyone I've ever spoken with who has been hated it. Starfish Cafe can bite me too.
  9. My fellow Rockwellians, I've decided I can't share this information-- I want this place all to myself. Sorry, Al P.S. On second thought, I may feel more charitable on Friday.
  10. Yes, they do have a bar menu. I don't recall the details though as it's been a while. I did have some pig's feet though! It's an attractive space in the wine bar. If it was more convenient for me, I'd go more frequently.
  11. If you're looking to get away from the city for a day trip, head out to Shepherdstown WV and hit the farmer's market behind the library on Sunday mornings. There are usually 8 or 10 vendors, most of them kinda hippy dippy, selling produce, bread, and cheese. Then walk down to The Lost Dog, an excellent coffee shop and have a cappuccino. There are some good lunch options in this quaint little village as well. Have a pizza at Three Onions, or a burger at the Yellow Brick Bank. I think this is one of the best day trips in the area. Give it a try, it's only about 90 mins away. And on a hot summer's day, you can stop off in Harper's Ferry and take a relaxing inner tube ride down the Shenandoah.
  12. Try the lounge at Good Guys. Then have some sushi next door at Sushi Ko!
  13. I've driven by Southern Fried Chicken and Pizza a few times. Come on, this is a brilliant concept. Why no mention anywhere?
  14. Not a farmer's market obviously, but Whole Paycheck (Foods) has had purple baby artichokes. I've seen them at a couple of locations-- P St, and the one down in Annandale.
  15. The best Steak House in DC I know where it is... At my place:
  16. Actually, it's the Dept of Stripclub Hygiene. They're the folks who check to make sure that the brass pole is wiped down after each performance.
  17. I can't help but get a laugh out of this ad for a server at 15 Ria. Highlights: I'm envisioning a restaurant staffed with recently graduated elementary school students. Kneeling, crawling, and stooping before customers to avoid mention of restaurant in Tom's weekly chats? Fingering? I knew restaurant staff can get a little frisky with one another, but yikes-- keep your hands away from my food! I wish this had been specified in the job description of the waiter who brought a reeking plate of mussels to a table I recently sat at with a few fellow Rockwellians.
  18. This site could be a good source of what's around the corner. Looks like Zengo in the Penn Quarter is looking for a GM: Craigs List
  19. The bitcher also said that they both had 1/4 of a glass of wine remaining-- as though that's a considerable amount and might require so much time to consume that their free sorbets would melt. I sometimes toy with the idea of opening a restaurant. When I read this kind of stuff though, I'd be rolling my eyes (and probably much worse) at bozos all the time.
