  1. Bedrock Old Vine Zin, 2012. Perfect for a vortex kind of evening.
  2. I capped the Chiefs playoff loss with a pour from this bottle. My wife, who isn't much of a bourbon fan, tried some and was shocked at how much she enjoyed it. This is the first pour I've had since the initial one, and its just as delicious and complex as I remembered it. A nice consolation prize for the wild card exit.
  3. Drinking again to Jamaal Charles and the Kansas City Chiefs. It was a quick playoff run, but at least it was disappointing and underwhelming.
  4. Without knowing this thread existed, some of us tried to name a cocktail for all of us, in vain, The Rockwellardier.
  5. King Henry was a one-off brew from Goose Island. Some speculators have bottles for sale on beer collector websites. Looks like they'll set you back around $150 a pop. The newest Bourbon County series was released earlier this month, and it did include a Barleywine, just not barrel aged.
  6. Made it with some Elmer T Lee (90 proof) last night, and it was a bit too sweet for my taste. Next attempt will be a higher proof bourbon.
  7. Gonna mix up some more of these tonight, probably with a lower proof bourbon this time.
  8. There's another LastBottleWines.com marathon going on right now. Early returns are good labels from off years and possibly vintages on the decline. Still, some good bargains to be had if you're fast enough.
  9. The 2011 is available at Wine Library (excellent shippers and easy to find free shipping deals during the holidays), though don't know anything about the vintage: https://winelibrary.com/wines/74551-produttori-nebbiolo-langhe
  10. I've been drinking a lot of one off random beers these past few weeks. Some fall into the Xmas category, others are just out this time of year. The one thing I can say with certainty is if you see a bottle of Sam Adam Cherry Chocolate Bock, run as far as you can the other way. I think it only comes in their winter variety pack, and might be fine at a party for people who don't like beer, but wow this went straight down the sink after two sips for me.
  11. Well looks like we got this one right, according to an Arlnow article 18 months later "New Italian Store Location To Replace 7-11 In Westover" I posted my question so long ago, I don't even remember who my original source was.
  12. To Jamaal Charles, his amazing day, and another trip to the playoffs for the Chiefs!
  13. I prepared the first of many variations last night using Aperol, Dolin Blanc, and Breuckelen 77 Rye and Corn Whiskey (Disclosure? I'm friends with the owner's sister). I haven't had the original Campari version, but I really dug this one. The whiskey isn't overpowering to the more delicate spirits, so you really do get a good blend of all three flavors. Of course the Aperol and Vermouth are both on the lighter, citrusy side. My wife who doesn't like sweet drinks, including the Aperol Fizz for which we have the bottle, thought it was very good I went with the rye over bourbon, after reading the linked to article that heavier bourbons could overpower the drink. Go ahead and make your Aperol Boulevardiers without fear. Perhaps we could get it named the Rockwellardier around town.
  14. I e-mailed Jake Parrot out of the blue to see where I could get Dolin Blanc in Richmond, and he was more than helpful. Distributors are in the business of selling their products, so I think they don't mind the occasional e-mail asking where you could find their product. A lot of times distributor websites also carry that information or invite you to contact them.
  15. I'll report back sometime this weekend. I have tons of bourbon and a few ryes to work with as well.
  16. This is one of the few times, that I've been ahead of the curve. I bought a bottle of this on a whim, at double what I like to pay for my bourbon ($80ish I think), and brought it to our last bourbon tasting event. It was the clear winner of the night, but we all knew we probably would never see another bottle of it. It's been sitting on my shelf ever since, and I've only had one or two more pours from it. The article's description is pretty spot on, especially with the fruit notes. It doesn't have a whole lot of burn, and when poured over a block of ice I'd say it rivaled my one experience with Mr. Van Winkle's 15 year bottling. My only regret, now, is leaving that second bottle on the shelf. http://whiskyadvocate.com/whisky/2013/12/12/whisky-advocate-award-american-whiskey-of-the-year-2/
  17. Cool, thanks for the advice. I usually use Dolin Vermouths, so I'll try some variants out.
  18. I bought some Aperol over the summer for a cocktail recipe, and have half a bottle or so left. Does it compare favorably to Campari in drinks like these?
  19. Here is Draft Magazine's 2013 Top 25 Beers of the Year. Here is Wine Enthusiast's Top 25 Beers. Since this is presented as a buying guide, the one-offs aren't as prevalent, but regionals like New Glarus and Deschutes are very highly regarded. I don't really rank things when I try them, so I have no personal best beers of the year. But looking back through the VBT, which is a good online record, I think I'll pick up some more Troegnator once my fridge is empty. Please chime in with any best of lists, either published or person, that you might have!
  20. According to Draft Magazine, this is one of the top 25 beers of 2013. This is the second top beers of 2013 list I've seen, and they're mainly filled with limited and regional releases. "Sixpoint Brewery // 3Beans // spice/herb/vegetable Beer The chewiest, richest beer we sipped this year, 3Beans broods over the palate with intense darkness. Brewed with Romano beans (a cousin of the Kidney) for body, coffee beans for a java jolt and cacao beans for dark chocolate sweetness, the Baltic porter's elevated by espresso roast, bittersweet chocolate and dark fruit for an unrivaled, luscious sip; plus, all that rich flavor conceals a sly 10% ABV."
  21. And now it is official Bardstown principal cleared in Pappy Van Winkle investigation by Jack Brammer From the article : "Melton also said he will make 'a significant announcement' concerning the case at a news conference at his office at 3:30 p.m. Dec. 2. He did not elaborate. No arrests have been made in the case. Melton said more than 100 people have been interviewed. Pickett became a person of interest in the case after he was identified in surveillance video from a Hardin County liquor store where a clerk said a man wanted to sell a large amount of Pappy."
  22. I haven't been much into gin lately, but the good people at PX turned me onto Citadelle Gin out of France a few years ago. It is priced at about $20, and gets the job done. I'd call it a pretty mild tasting gin. I think it is closer to 90 than 80 proof, but not overpowering in cocktails.
  23. Two magnums of our current house red Borsao Tres Picos (2010) for the family, and a bottle or two of Keating Zinfandel (2009, Montecillo Vineyard) for the wine drinkers. Maybe we'll pop some champagne too, since it's the first Thanksgiving in our new home.
  24. This episode is for sale on iTunes for $2.99: Link The Travel Channel website also puts up full episodes sometimes, but this one isn't up yet.
