  1. Working on the freezer some more - I will make real meals next week. Tonight, cherry meatballs on naan with greek yogurt. And salad. And it was tasty. So glad the food survived the fridge issue!
  2. So, ran up to see the parents this weekend. Saw them, 1 sister (and her husband and 1 of their kids), and my brother. Didn't get to go out. Helped with the parental cooking. (They are aging.) But now we are home. And last night, we just ate random snack stuff, because after driving all day, who wants to cook? Tonight, we worked on getting rid of fridge stuff, and so, we ate bruschetta. Well, kinda. I got a baguette, and we sliced it, and brushed the slices with olive oil, and then topped the slices with sun-dried tomatoes and fresh mozzarella. Then basil leaves, which are going nuts in their pots in the back yard. Also salad. For dessert, we tried the cake pops that my niece made and sent back with us. I liked the frosting. The boy liked them all. I would have liked them, were it not for the coconut. Oh well. So I had some of the cookies I bought for road snacks on the way back - maple cream sandwiches. They were good.
  3. Made an expedition here over the weekend. Heading up to mom and dad's this weekend, and mom has a thing for crystalized ginger. Mediterranean Bakery has the best, and for a very good price. She likes it a lot, so I always take her some. I asked what else she wanted. She said, "I don't know what else they have!" So I ran down the list of dried fruits, including the fact that they seem to be the only place I can find unsweetened dried tart cherries. Then I hear dad in the background yelling, "Bring those!" Offered spice mixes too, but he said he has enough of those right now. So, shopping. Got some urfa pepper, aleppo pepper, and rice flour there too for us. Sadly, no fruit roll cookies. "The baker is on.... vacation?... maybe 2 weeks?" Those cookies better come back! She better be right about "vacation!" Those are the best cookies. I got some halvah though. I like that. Nobody else here does, so I don't have to share.
  4. So, on @Kibbee Nayee's advice, when we headed out to Mediterranean Bakery to pick up some crystalized ginger for Mom and some dried cherries for dad (also hoping for fruit roll cookies, but apparently the baker is on vacation and "maybe in 2 weeks?" Anyhow.) and some ingredients for us, we stopped here. Got sandwiches for lunch, and the shwarma and souvlaki were very good. Got some most excellent tahini. Looked all around at cool stuff. Now, we need to find a time to go on the weekend for the kibbee nayee. Well worth the stop!
  5. Another new recipe. I saw this on the NYT cooking app, and we HAD to try it. So we did. Plus salad. Later, ice cream. So, "Oven Fries With Tahini Yogurt and Smoky-Sweet Nuts" will get made again. Was quite tasty. We made the full amount of the nut and tahini toppings, and used about 2/3 of it on a half amount of the potatoes. We both like extra glop. Had to do a bit of shopping to make this - lost the tahini, which was getting old anyhow, in the tragedy of the fridge. So I took kibbehnaya's (I think I have spelled that incorrectly) advice and when we went to Mediterranean Bakery, we also stopped at Mediterranean Gourmet. Got the peppers and a jar of lovely tahini between the 2 places. No more supermarket tahini from now on!
  6. At the park again last night, and once again, not organized enough to bring food. I did manage water though, and seat cushions. But I was not eating Nats dogs again. They are just not nice, I have now had stomach issues twice this year after eating them and there are STILL no onions. So we had papusas. He had cheese and chicken, I had bean and cheese. And they were quite good. The papusa stand has moved, and is now on the first level behind first base. So a quick trip upstairs to our seats, and the food was still warm when we sat down. Our usher Benny was there last night, and all is right in section 308.
  7. I tried a new recipe tonight, and was quite pleased. So there was salad, and dinner rolls, and Pork Chops with Peaches. That was so very tasty! (Although, since I have a large shelf full of spice mixes, rather than mixing up another, I used one intended for pork.) Later, ice cream.
  8. Sadly, I do not like lettuce soup. I have a friend/former boss who loves lettuce soup, and I understand her lettuce soup is good. But I hate it. So, not for me. The frozen lettuce became compost, and maybe more lettuce will grow because of it. So, tonight - it's Sunday and we were not at a ballgame. So, it's grill night! A porterhouse, rubbed with "butcher's rub" spice mix. Asparagus (the last of the season). Yellow squash. Carrots. Corn (the first of the season!). Salad. Dinner rolls. Later, ice cream. I made the delicious chocolate raspberry ice cream. Subbed in some black cocoa powder for 1/3 of the regular dutch cocoa powder, so I expect it to be extra dark, which is the boy's favorite thing, extra dark chocolate. I don't love dark chocolate, except.... I love oreos, I love "Famous Chocolate Wafers," and I love dark chocolate ice cream. I just don't like dark chocolate bars. So I am looking forward to this.
  9. Stopped in for a few beers the other night. (looking at this topic - we went once in the fall, and sat outside, and I was amazed at how well they were coping with all the restrictions. Sorry I forgot to post, because I like this place and would like to promote them!) Anyhow, Saturday. 3 of us. Tried the ESB (Cheshire Grin) on nitro (Have had it before on cask and on draft but not nitro. God, we are beer nerds.) Then I had more of that, while the others had the bock, (Unicycle Vigilante). All very tasty. Met the new taproom manager, missed all the former staff, but they are keeping up SO well despite everyone's ongoing staffing issues. We, being the barflies that we are, wanted to sit at the bar, but they aren't doing that yet. Still working out the logistics they said. But we got a bar table, and hung out and enjoyed being OUT OUT OUT! (Yeah, we missed going out.)
  10. Saturday night, we wanted to go drink at Silver Branch. But the current food menu interested none of us. So we went to Quarry House for burgers and beer. 3 of us, one a bit of a whisky snob. She had so much fun picking out a whisky to try. She loves to get a small shot of something she has never had before so she can try it without buying a full bottle. So, beer, burgers, tots, and some whisky. Also, the new bar manager there is one of our favorite former bartenders from Little Coco's - that was a nice surprise! Their beer list was excellent. Lots of very local stuff, and a good variety (says the woman who really hates hop bombs and can have issues with modern beer lists.) The whisky list remains excellent. The burgers were cooked properly, and quite tasty. And the service was very good. I know they are still staffing up, but SO friendly and helpful.
  11. Friday night, a trip to Bedrock (always fun) followed by the recently re-opened Smoke and Barrel. The beer list is still working its way back, the entire crew is new, including the kitchen. So, we drank some beer, and enjoyed it but wished for a little more variety in our choices. We ate a BBQ sampler, split between 4 of us, and it was good, but clearly, still working out the newness. Watched some baseball, met the new staff, said hi to Johnny, and it was good.
  12. I am very grateful that we have the secondary fridge. But it froze the lettuce. So no salad tonight. Oh well, it has kept MOST things safe. Although, it also froze the basil yesterday. Luckily, there was basil in the back yard, so the pizza was still properly basiled. However, the repairman came. The fridge had blown a few relays. The main fridge is now cooling back down! And at a reasonable price! (And what WILL NOT stop running through my head? "My Old Man" by the Smothers Brothers. "He wears a refrigerator repairman's shoes, he wears a refrigerator repairman's hat.') (They did a LOT of versions of that. I think that one has the refrigerator repairman line.) So, there was asparagus-mushroom alfredo spaghetti. And garlic bread, made with rosemary sourdough bread. And later there will be ice cream. And tomorrow, ALL THE FOOD will come back up from the basement to the kitchen!
  13. Wednesday was pizza night. And cherries arrived at the farm market this week. So, brie and gorgonzola cherry pizza. Very tasty. Also, salad. The refrigerator repairman is parked outside and has been for 20 minutes. When is he going to come in and fix my fridge?!
  14. Lettuce arrived overnight. And so... salad. And BLTs! Later, ice cream. Working on making space in the tiny fridge/freezer.
  15. At the game on Sunday, back in our own seats. Our other 2 did not go, so we filled one seat with another friend, and had one empty seat. Had the semi-usual "Excuse me, you are in our seats." "No, these are ours." "No, this is 308." "Oh, sorry. Which way is 309?" exchange with folks when we arrived. Dudes, we have had these seats for 10+ years. We know where we sit. Beer - stella. Plain, fine. Dogs. I like them less every time. This time they were hot though! Still, total salt bombs, and NO ONIONS yet again. Brought in water. Next time, I will go back to bringing in food. Luckily, I was able to bring in my bag with seat cushions and water. That will fit some snacks too. Glad they have backed off on the "tiny bags only" policy. Now, can we get the backpack ban repealed? And perhaps accept cash again?
  16. So, tonight. Chicken with herbs and lemon - simple, and tasty. Also, some bread. No salad. Why? So, Saturday night we came home from a wonderful dinner. Went to the fridge to get a drink. The fridge was a bit warm. It had been making click noises... I should have realized. So it appears that the fridge is dead (again.) Luckily for us, last time it died, we got a small (not dorm sized, but not full sized) fridge for the basement. So, up and down the stairs we go carrying as much of the food as we could stuff into the downstairs fridge. Luckily, only had to trash about 20% of fridge contents, maybe a little more from the freezer. The lettuce had gotten too warm, but we thought it would be OK. No, then it froze as it was too far to the back in the basement fridge. Ah well. More lettuce will come in the South Mountain box tonight. There will be salad tomorrow. Luckily, the ice cream had only partly thawed, so there will be ice cream soon. And I sure hope they can fix it. Apparently it is currently nigh on impossible to get a new fridge, let alone a new black fridge. And repair folks can't get to us until Thursday. And who knows how long parts will take! Thank God for the basement fridge.
  17. Saturday night, a return to the bar at Kinship. Trying to make up for 2 missed anniversary dinners, several missed birthday dinners, and a planned Christmas Eve dinner. And as ever, so very tasty! We started with drinks, a "split tail" for him and a Mai Tai for me. Then he had soft shell crab appetizer while I had ricotta dumplings with poached asparagus and artichokes. For dinner we had the "For the Table" ribeye (usually his roasted chicken obsession means that we end up with the chicken. I am okay with that!) and a bottle of Piedrasassi, Rim Rock, Arroyo Grande Valley (I love sommeliers. They always help so much!) And of course, the most amazingly delicious parker house rolls ever! (Sorry, menu is not online. It says it is, but it brings up the cocktail list.) For dessert, I had "Drunken Cherries," while he had "Caramella Chocolate Ganache Tart." Delicious glass of dessert wine for each of us - can't remember specific names and list is not online. Mine was something made with cognac grapes, he had a Sauterne. And also as ever, the service was amazing. The bartender, who I think I have sat with before?, was lovely. The sommelier was so friendly and helpful. The food servers were lovely. It was just a wonderful night all around.
  18. I would be really happy to eat at your house.
  19. I'm interested, but a bit intimidated. I would try to go!
  20. Went for dinner again last night - 4 of us, sat inside this time. Drank a lot of cider, tried the Rose Gin and Tonic, ate a bunch of different food. Made reservations to go at least one more time before they have to close. Really, it is so sad. But the food is still good, and the cider is still good.
  21. Tonight was easy dinner night - cleaners came today, and we hate to make the kitchen gross so quickly! So, salad and pork buns. Pork buns made from leftover crockpot pulled pork that we pulled out of the freezer. The recipe uses frozen bread dough, but I just made this bread dough. Assembled and baked them over the weekend, popped them into the freezer. They nuke well straight out of the freezer. Quite tasty. Later, ice cream.
  22. Huh, can't find a topic for this. Well, it isn't exactly a restaurant. it's a beer garden with some food. Good beer that regularly rotates. So, last night we wanted out. Early Nats game, nice weather, let's walk down to the beer garden for some baseball, beer, and bar food. So, a few innings of baseball, some nice beer, and a "Beer Garden Platter," which is 2 brats with kraut, mustard, and onions (he gets my kraut. Bleah cabbage.), and a giant pretzel with mustard and cheese sauce for dipping. Nice evening. https://midlandsdc.com
  23. Asparagus season is coming to an end, so pile it on for as long as we can! Tonight was omelettes with goat cheese, mushrooms, and asparagus. Also salad and toast. Strawberry season may be running down too. So I made more infused vermouth for strawberry spritzes this weekend, and tonight the last of this week's strawberries will be on top of ice cream again.
  24. Us too. We also have quarter season tickets. The baseball obsessed one that I live with always buys the full postseason package, figuring we can always sell what we don't need. (He was right about that!) We went to every game of that post season, although our other 2 ticket-pod folks only went to some. What a run that was!
