  1. Beer here again last night - the Obsidian Castle is still on. So tasty. We also ate here, due to the closure of Quarry House for covid stuff. The current menu is Mexican. I love Mexican. So.... Nope. Almost everything had cilantro. The boy ate the quesadilla and said it was fine but not exciting. I had the pretzel. Delicious, but not what I had been hoping for. Oh well. As ever, the beer is so good.
  2. After our annual watching of "Muppet Christmas Carol" at the AFI Silver last night, we tried to get dinner at Quarry House. No go - closed for a week due to a positive covid test among the staff. I hope they are all well and that nobody gets truly sick.
  3. Leftover turkey divan, along with salad tonight. (Christmas dinner is now down to 5 people, but appears to still be scheduled. Anybody in Petworth need some extra Brussels sprouts?)
  4. Dinner at the bar on Friday - our usual four. Pizzas. Negronis. Fizzy pink wine. Beer. Cannoli. Dropped off some Christmas treats for the staff, and a good time was had by all.
  5. Dinner at the bar Saturday. Took some Christmas treats for our bartenders, had some very delicious cocktails - it was dead dead dead, and they had time to be creative. Lumpia to share. Tocino sandwich for me, sissig for our third, and steak frites for the boy. Then we came home, another friend came over, and we had eggnog and cookies for dessert.
  6. As we hope that our Christmas dinner will still happen, this is the week of easy dinners. So, salad. Monday was enchiladas from the freezer. Yesterday was quesadillas. (I was making chorizo stuffed mushrooms to put in the freezer for Christmas. So, chorizo and mushroom quesadillas.) Tonight was turkey divan from the freezer.
  7. Tonight was salad, followed by potato pancakes (with sour cream), and breakfast sausage (with applesauce). It was delicious. Later, we will finish the rum raisin ice cream.
  8. Had lunch at the Teaism on 8th Street by the Navy Memorial today with a friend before checking out the holiday market. First, the market. I love it, but it is not as good this year. Too many import shacks and not enough local art stuff. But the mini doughnuts are still delicious. Now, on to Teaism. So the menu is a lot shorter than it used to be. I had the Korean brisket sandwich and she had the brisket bento box. There was no warning that there is cilantro involved. I managed to pick most of it off. Why? WHY? Otherwise it was good. Her tea was excellent, and she is a tea snob. No, I don't remember what kind. I had lassi, and it was tasty. She took home a bag of salty oat cookies. I didn't, because coconut is not my thing. (You know, this post really makes me sound picky, but I don't THINK that I am!)
  9. And tonight was baked chicken thighs (rubbed with olive oil and a chicken bbq spice mix). Also salad. Also english muffins. Then rum raisin ice cream for dessert.

    Gin

Hey folks - anyone able to help out with some Christmas shopping? I'm looking for gin. And vermouth. But not just any gin. New or unusual very very botanical gin. And not just any vermouth. His usual is Dolin. So something good, but different. So where should I go where someone knowledgeable can help me choose something, and then sell it to me? And any suggestions on good brands? Thank you all!
  11. OK, they did NOT have it at 14th and U, but they had 3 pieces at Eastern Market. So we bought 2. And it is delicious. Thanks again!
  12. Tonight, as ever, we started with salad - ours are never as exciting as Pat's. Our formula is lettuce, carrots, thinly sliced red onions, cheese (often blue crumbles, sometimes grated other stuff. Working on using up the aged gouda left from the thanksgiving cheese plate at the moment), fruit, and nuts. He often adds cherry tomatoes, and always adds olives (usually black, currently digging the orange marinated ones) to his. Then quesadillas. Pepper jack was on sale this week and I had the remnants of chicken fajitas in the freezer. So that was good. Last night was salad, followed by linguini with broccoli, freezer roast chicken, and mushrooms in a light cream sauce. English muffins for bread. (Again, thanks for the brilliant idea Pat!)
  13. OK, I had no clue who this was, and had to google. The name here is apparently his grandfather's nickname.
  14. Went down here for a tasting and some drinks on Saturday. I'm sorry they have moved out of our neighborhood, but love the space down there. The bar is usually loud, but not this week - the majority of the folks were in the main space at the tables. I love most of their products. The iron based one does not please me. Everything else... They released a special long-aged nocino this weekend that is quite tasty. So I brought a bottle of that home! Nothing else this time, but I do keep a lot of his stuff on my home bar. They make good booze.
  15. Ate here last Saturday after a trip to Don Ciccio for tasting and a drink. I had fried chicken. The boy had a version of the fish special. And our friend had a crab cake sandwich. We all tried to order other things, but half the specials were sold out, and so... Service was good. We sat at the bar, and folks were friendly. The beer list was OK. Convenient if you are down there, and affordable, but do NOT go late if you want the specials! (And we weren't even that late.)
  16. Takeout from here last Friday, eaten at the bar at Crown and Crow (directly downstairs, and WHY is there no thread for it?) It was tasty - our usual 4, so 4 entrees, and a shared bread basket and sides of raita and chutney. Even the chili heads thought the vindaloo was overly hot! But the paneer I had was delicious, and the lamb that the 4th had was appreciated. We have only dined in there once, years ago, but it sure is convenient for food when drinking downstairs. Prices are not bad for takeout.
  17. Still on the intermittent project of using down the freezer - tonight was chicken, frozen from the last roast chicken, chopped and stir fried with blanched broccoli. Sauced with Soy Vey hoisin teriyaki and topped with toasted sliced almonds, on brown rice. It was tasty. The boy added chili crisp and soy sauce to his. Was tasty. Also, salad. Monday was mac and cheese, with a mix of cheeses to use the ends of cheese, a fried up link of chorizo, and grilled green chilis. Also, salad. Went to a holiday party last night, so didn't cook.
  18. No longer Homestead - this is now Commonwealth Cantina. Yes, another tex-mex place. Overpriced and over-cilantroed.
  19. A return to the bar for dinner last Friday. Really, nothing new to report, just that it was lovely to sit at the bar, eat the food fresh from the kitchen, have the delicious cocktails, and enjoy the very good service.
  20. We sat at the bar last Friday. 3 of us. So happy to be here and to eat their cooking again. Also happy to see Kevin behind the bar and have some very tasty drinks. And got to say hi to Ann Cashion! (Our dining companion totally had a fan girl breakdown, but managed to save it until after our conversation.) Sadly, too much cilantro, but there are enough things that I can eat that I had a good dinner. People, really, not EVERY Mexican food item has cilantro in it. And why can't anyone make me guacamole without the evil green? Short kitchen hours, short menu, but everything we tried, both drinks and cocktails, was delicious, and the service was a lovely as ever.
  21. I am so far behind on remembering what I have been cooking, which is too bad, because I find this thread so very convenient for ideas and reminders! Thanksgiving was only 4 of us, so it was small. Still have leftovers though, so we had a turkey divan this week. Not the classic recipe. A layer of stuffing, a layer of turkey, broccoli, blops or cranberry sauce, topped with cheese sauce. I like it. I make it every year. Also tried a quiche recipe that used the leftover mashed potatoes for the crust. Not as successful, as the crust never really cooked into a crust the way the recipe said it should. Going to make a mac and cheese this week to use up some of the cheese from the cheese plate.
  22. We are going for Christmas eve, and it looks like the menu may not be too different than that. How was the first course less than perfect?
  23. OK, it seems I had not missed reservations for Christmas eve, but it still did not work out. Will have to plan a visit another time. Our usual Christmas eve dinner companion has her mother coming in for the holiday, and this is far beyond her financial comfort level. But we did score Corduroy reservations, so that will be good.
  24. Thank you! It is always something I want!
