  1. Pool and beer Friday, early, before heading upstairs to Los Campeneros for dinner. Bedrock remains a good place for beer and pool. I am so glad they have made it this far through the crazy.
  2. Dinner here again Friday. And again, the food was good, the drinks were good, the service was good. The special tacos involved short ribs and had jus for dipping. Three of us ate those, while the fourth had crab cakes. Desserts were good too. Churros and flan both get multiple thumbs up. (I just wish there was less cilantro. It really limits my choices.) Oh, also, glad they were checking vaccination cards, even though the mandate hadn't started yet!
  3. I dunno, that looks like I would actually TASTE the celery!
  4. Ellicott City Diner - not in the historic downtown, but not far out Route 40. It's huge. I mean really huge. Sunday we planned to go up to Gettysburg, hit the diner early for breakfast, then do some antique/junque/junk shopping. But no. Stupid snow storm. Instead we decided to go to Ellicott City for a little shopping and come home before the storm got bad. Naturally, we also decided to see if there might be a diner there. And there was! It was tasty. Very classic diner. Clearly Greek owned. We didn't try any of the crazy stuff, although I really want to try the "extreme shakes." The boy had eggs over easy, white toast, home fries, sausage. (I was surprised that he didn't get scrapple, as he often does when we are somewhere that has it. Apparently, that is only in PA? Weirdo. Then again....) I had chicken and waffles, which came with a bowl of honey and butter for topping. It was quite good. I did not have coffee. He did. Said it was fine diner coffee. (We had stopped at Buna on the way out of town, as I wanted coffee before driving. Also, I prefer Ethiopian coffee to diner coffee.) If we lived closer, I would go regularly. As it is, this will become a good road trip stop. Shopping was not successful. No antiques or junque acquired. Although, I did find some fun socks.
  5. Ah, behind again. So, Monday was split pea soup. With leftover corn muffins, toasted. Also, salad. That was some good soup. I did not have a ham bone or ham hock, but had a chunk of ham with some bone in it, so that worked. Now I have a lot of leftover celery and I don't generally like celery. Need to figure out something. Tuesday was frito pie, with the leftover chili from the weekend. Also, salad. Sadly, that night was the end of the chocoflan. That stuff is so good. Last night we tried out a new quiche recipe. Added mushrooms. It was really tasty. Also, salad. Tonight is more split pea soup. English muffins. Also, salad. Also, Pat, I did not actually realize velveeta had a best buy date!
  6. Last night was more use stuff out of the freezer. So, roast chicken from the freezer, chopped, added to jarred red pasta sauce with some sautéed mushrooms over fettuccini. Also, salad and English muffins. Saturday we had folks over for dinner and games. Chili, corn muffins, salad. Chocoflan for dessert!
  7. Monday we made a pork shoulder in the crock pot. Dry rub (the end of a good mix, from a place that doesn't exist any more. Sad), onions, a little cider, and pork. Ate it as pulled pork. Also, corn pudding. The recipe was big, so I did some math and made a smaller batch. Tasty. I think I cooked it a little too long, as it was a little dry. Will do it again though. Also, salad. Last night was omlettes. Eggs (duh), brie, mushrooms, tarragon. Also, English muffins. Also, salad. Tonight is leftovers from the freezer - north African meatballs. Also, salad.
  8. We have not. Looking at it, sounds like it is worth trying, but... not when I want Thai.
  9. I remain delusional. We wanted Thai. 4 of us for Thai and cards at our house. So, knowing that they are NOT good at coordinating timing, I ordered all the food on one order. But still.... No more advanced scheduling, even though the website says you can. It was never good anyhow. So I know, it always takes 20ish minutes. I place the order, noting that it says 20-30 when it confirms. Then I get a text. 50-60 minutes. I know this is not right. I head over to arrive at 25 minutes. Check to see if food is ready. It is! No, I don't bother telling them what a pain in the ass this is. It's not worth the effort. I just swear, yet again, to find a new Thai place. (But the food is good, and it is close!) I have parked a block away. I walk back to the car, text folks to tell them I am on my way back with food. And get a text that food is ready! But the spring rolls were good, and I was told the dumplings were good. I liked my cashew chicken. The boy enjoyed his spicy seafood shrimp. There was also a Udom's curry and a pineapple fried rice at the table that were well reviewed. Any thoughts on better organized Thai food not too terribly far from southern Petworth?
  10. We were there in October, over Columbus Day weekend. I recommend "Federal Fritter." HIGHLY recommend. Although the service was a bit odd. (My comments from October.) Also enjoyed the brewpub at Dogfish Head. Nothing fancy, but fine pub food and nice beer.
  11. Tonight was a freezer night. But not for both of us. He used up the frozen shrimp in a dinner of shrimp and orzo. I had an artichoke, steamed, with butter to dip. Also, salad.

    Gin

I went to Ace - which has also been my go-to, but I was uncertain without Joe there any more. I should not have hesitated. So, a bottle of sweet red vermouth, a bottle of dry vermouth, both Oscar. And a bottle of Himalayan gin - Hapusa. He says it isn't as floral as many modern gins, but it is lovely, botanical, and makes an excellent perfect martini. Last year I went to a place in Georgetown - um....Potomac Wine and Spirits - and found 2 gins. Bobby's, which which is a genever that he enjoyed, and an Argentinia Mate gin, which he also enjoyed. There was no vermouth involved last year. (The house gins here are Green Hat spring and Citadelle.)
  13. Derby night - the boys both had burgers, I had a brat. Also, good beer. And good service. Glad to have this place in the neighborhood.
  14. Sunday we had some folks over for food and post-Christmas Christmas celebration. I am done cooking big meals for a little while after the holidays. So, off to Litteri for the 3 foot Italian sub! A big success. Also, leftovers. Been eating this for lunch all week. (Served with chips and dip. A total junk food meal. Good homemade cookies and strudel for dessert though!)
  15. Saturday was our traditional New Year's day brunch and games at a friend's house. Her new year thing is corned beef and cabbage. I hate corned beef and cabbage. Luckily, she made a corned beef hash frittata, a tasty slaw, waldorf salad, coffee cake, and later, apple crumb pie with vanilla ice cream. All tasty. The only thing I made was the ice cream! Sunday we had people who couldn't make Christmas dinner over. Only thing I cooked was the Christmas cookies for dessert! (Takeout from Litteri for food. Also chips and dip.) A friend who came brought apple strudel (she made it) and chlebicky for apps. (Delicious tiny Czech open faced sandwiches.) Monday was potato soup - no recipe, just read a bunch of them then made a baked potato soup. Also, salad. Tuesday was angel hair pasta with broccoli, chicken, and mushrooms, and alfredo sauce. Also, salad. Last night we tried a new recipe for beans, mushrooms, and eggs (had leftover creme fraiche. Sadly, when we opened the tub, it was NOT good. So, subbed sour cream. Oh well.) The boy was VERY dubious, but really enjoyed it, despite the fact that I let the eggs slightly overcook. Also, salad. Tonight was supposed to be food out of the freezer, but there's a lot of potato soup left. So, more soup! Also, more salad. And I know, we eat a lot of salad, as it is an easy way to add veg to dinner. But this week, we had some leftover lettuce, then, forgetting we had that we got a BIG thing of lettuce at the Mt Pleasant farm market last Saturday. So, big salads all week!
  16. Those little phyllo tart shells are the best. They make good desserts. They make good savory stuff too. I make fake bastilla in them. A friend makes caramelized onion tarts in them. I have also made fake baklava in them. Especially convenient for party food when I like to make everything finger food and bite size.
  17. Got a baguette here the other day. So good. There are so many options there that I have not tried yet, and need to. Wish it were closer.
  18. There was leftover cheese. And nuts. And chopped liver. And kielbasa. And wine jelly. I tried to get a baguette at Le Caprice. But there were none. So since I had to go west of the park anyhow, I went to Bread Furst. Such good bread. Add a salad, and that's dinner. Leftover week can be tasty!
  19. I like canned peas better than fresh or frozen. And they are perfect for samosas.
  20. There were more potatoes than I needed for Christmas dinner. There were breakfast sausages in the freezer, sour cream in the fridge, and applesauce in the cabinet. The cleaners come tomorrow, so it's OK to make the stove a bit messy. Potato pancakes! (plus salad - I got lettuce yesterday.)
  21. 6 of us for Christmas Eve dinner at Corduroy - and it was so, so delicious. And now I am not going to remember what everyone had. But I had beet salad, antelope with chestnut puree, and baked chocolate saboyan. And the boy had tuna tartare, beef strip loin, and chocolate tart with caramelized banana. And we were both happy. He started with a "Real McCoy," and I started with a pear spritz. A bottle of Willamette pinot noir with dinner. A glass of port with dessert for me, and a glass of sauterne for him. (ETA: we had the sommelier choose the wine, and that was smart.) We were all happy. They clearly had only so many staff - it was a little slow. But the food and the service were so perfect, and we had good company, so it did not matter. I love this place.
  22. Today is Christmas dinner leftovers. Toasted English muffins are very good as bread for nice roast beef sandwiches. (used to be a place in Alexandria that made steak sandwiches on English muffins and I always loved them) No salad tonight - I didn't get lettuce before Christmas. Christmas dinner was tasty, but we also had timing problems, so ate an hour later than planned. Apps: Kielbasa (hunter, wedding, and Christmas) (Kielbasa Factory) Red wine sheep cheese, sage darby, pierre robert, rogue river blue (Bower's) Assorted crackers chopped liver Union Square bar nuts chorizo stuffed mushrooms gougeres Macadamia caramel corn (A Christmas present from my aunt) Dinner: Beef tenderloin with horseradish orange sauce Rolls (I need a new recipe. These were not as good as I wanted.) Broccoli salad Duchess potatoes beets with orange vinaigrette, little tiny mozzarella pearls, chopped pistachios. (there was supposed to be julienned fennel on top. Oops, it got left off. Had some on today's leftovers, and it was good. Was good the other way too.) Roasted brussels sprouts Dessert: Yule log Ice cream (peppermint, vanilla, frozen cocoa) (there were supposed to be cookies, but since we ended with only 5 at dinner, instead of the expected 11, (due to positive covid cases in the kids' classrooms. )(They tested negative, but stayed home to be cautious.)we didn't eat those.
