  1. May not be the most economical way, but I just called the local Spanish restaurant and asked if they could sell me some...And they said yes! Saves me a trip....thank you Isabellas Tavern!
  2. Where is Mi Lay Ki? I tried googling but couldn't find anything
  3. I agree with you about Penang. I haven't found their food to be terribly authentic. But the Roti Canai is really delicious and reminds me of the chicken curries we had in Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia Kopitiam is just a bit too far from where we need to be (Wheaton Ice Rink).. I had a feeling that Malay food would be a bit of a stretch.
  4. Those sound like good options. Do you happen to know of anyplace that prepares authentic Malay food? Their satays and curries are very different from Indonesian versions..
  5. Any ideas of where I might find the ham closer to Columbia?
  6. I need a bit of Jamon Serrano for a presentation I'm doing in Spanish class next Tuesday. Between now and then I will be travelling between Frederick, MD and St. Michaels (passing Columbia, Ellicott City)...Anyone know where I can buy some? Does Trader Joes carry it? Thanks..
  7. Trying to find a new place (well, new to us) that serves fabulous ethnic food. My dad is a huge fan of Indian, Malay (he was in the Peace Corps in Malaysia for 3 years), Thai, and Chinese. food. We live in Frederick, but are going to be down in Wheaton for a college ice hockey game. So we can pretty much go anywhere between here and there - preferably IN Wheaton since that's our final destination for the evening. Any suggestions on where we could go? There will probably be 6 of us going. TIA
  8. Thanks for all of the suggestions - we were able to get reservatons at Addies and ate there. Good choice. Food was very good - trout grilled perfectly. Worth the $$...
  9. any other seafood restaurants nearby? I was hoping for some nice scallops or tuna...
  10. Going tonight to the blues show and want to grab a bite beforehand. We are coming from Frederick so can stop in Rockville or Gaithersburg. No fine dining - just good food. Also, I have started Weight Watchers (ugh) - so would like to find a place that would have lower-caloric offerings as well as the standard yummy stuff. Thanks!
  11. Thanks for the suggestions. We couldn't get into Central or TenPenh - but we were able to get a table at Tosca.... Looking forward to it!
  12. Looking for a decent place to have pre-theatre dinner near the Warner Theatre. Since we can't have a lingering evening, we're not really interested in $100 pp dinner...Any suggestions? We like almost everything except sushi..It can be casual or more formal - as long as we can get in by 6 and out by 7:40 Thanks for the help!
  13. Carmine's is the kind of place I thought I would hate. I didn't it..Yes, it was loud and boisterous and crazy. But it was homey and family-y and the food was pretty darn good to boot! I wonder if it will have the same feel if it's not in NY...
  14. I've read all the postings about San Juan on this site. Since I'm one week from going, thought I would check to see if anyone had some new insight?
  15. A couple of updates to the Frederick dining scene: New favorites: Mick's American Bistro - upscale American fare with interesting twists when Chef Jeff is feeling creative: Mick's Website The Buzz - in Monrovia, has great sandwiches and wonderful baked goods. Buzz Website I blogged about both of these here: Micks & Buzz blog Juliet's - Italian store/deli/gelato/take out....I've only had a few items, but everything has been very tasty - the mozzarella veggie short baguette was filled with fresh, soft mozzarella & a well seasoned artichoke/olive salad.. Juliets Market Once good/Now, not so much: Fajita Grande. Still enjoy the margaritas and salsa. But the food? no. Hinode - oy. service problems, small portions, fabulous location --- Doc Geiser's Carryout & Catering (ol_ironstomach)
  16. If you're heading up north to Frederick for any of the multitude of events that they throw (In the Streets, Five Alive, Gallery Walk, First Night, etc..)- don't miss the opportunity to eat at Mick's American Bistro on Patrick St. Though downtown, it is a few blocks off of the main drag. The food is consistently good and always interesting. The chef, Jeff Stines, worked at Cafe Boulud in Palm Beach and at the Breaker's Hotel also in Palm Beach, FL..He brings a passion for cooking and an innovative flair to his dishes. Here's their website: http://www.frederick...sponsor&id=4458 Hope you have a chance to help this new entrepreneur succeed! If you want to read more, I blogged about our experiences there here: http://thediningdiva.blogspot.com/
  17. Their BBQ Baked Beans are delicious! Sweet & bacony & smoky .... I love Black Hog. We used them for family reunion carry-out and every single person at the party became a fan.
  18. I've got a blog that covers restaurants in Frederick : http://thediningdiva.blogspot.com/ Thanks... Janis

  21. Sounds like a great meal - I think the two of us can make it...
  22. There's not a lot of talk on the boards about the dining scene up here in Frederick County (other than Volt of course)..But lately, I have found a few places that have proved very pleasant! The first - Taco Michoacan. It's a little taqueria heading out west on Rt 40 just before the intersection with I-70 west. There's not much to it, just a small storefront and a charming woman who speaks minimal English but makes great soft corn tortilla tacos. A wide range of fillings is available - you just need to be patient as everything is made to order - one by one. Her polla con crema made quite the hit with my 16 year old daughter - an avowed chicken eater. Rich and cream and slightly spicy. And, there are a variety of tortas (sandwiches) available that are also pretty tasty. All dishes are served with salsa & fresh limes & as much cilantro as you like. One of my new favorite places is Mick's American Bistro. It's on Patrick Street where Jennifer's used to be (our former mayor). THe chef is not afraid to take risks and offers up some interesting fare. Gazpacho flavored with horseradish, smoked EVOO and topped with avocado; Huge shrimp (head-on shell-on) served over curried rice noodles, meatloaf over creamy creamy dreamy mashed potatoes, seared diver scallops over polenta with fennel/radish relish on top. Duo of roasted marrow with crusty bread.. Yay! Oh - and we couldn't resist. We ordered the special appetizer of the day - Deep fried pig tail. I'm not a big pork lover, and certainly I doubted that I would be a fan of such a dish. Well, I wasn't wrong. Even though it was deep fried which does make most things taste pretty darn good - it was still too piggy for me. I did, however, enjoy the arugula garnish and rose/sea salt it was served with! (picture attached) FYI: The first Saturday of every month is Gallery Walk where the downtown area comes alive and stays alive with tons of visitors strolling and dining in the historic district. Also, theres live music along the Creek two Thursdays a month during the warm months. Must be over 21 to attend and there's lots of beer/wine and friends to meet. Come up for a visit! I have reviewed some of the places I frequent on my blog: www.thediningdiva.blogspot.com if you're interested...
  23. Darn..wish I had known...we had ours last Saturday and it was a blast! Actually, it was a full weekend long..started with a cocktail party at the Kitchen Studio in Frederick where Christine Van Bloem served appetizers from MAFC, then we all went to the movie. The party continued on SAturday night with a dinner party where everybody brought something they prepared using a recipe in one of Julia's books! Dinner was great, the party was a blast, and the movie was really fun...
  24. Great dinner last night!! Everyone got into the spirit of the evening and we had a delicious meal comprised of dishes found in Julia's books. Some used "Mastering the Art of French Cooking", others used "The Way to Cook"..Regardless - it was delicious. Started with camembert crackers served with fresh fruit, main course Daube Provencal, mashed potatoes, and sauteed green beans with tomato relish & pickled onions. And freshly baked bread. For dessert- a fruit tart (all berries) and a chocolate mocha cake. Alas, I served American coffee and neglected to brew with a French press. With 8 coffee wishing diners, it would have taken me an hour just to make the coffee! Anyway - we loved the night, and it was fun to have a current theme!
