  1. I had the same experience the other day. I was watching a football game on TV and wondered into the kitchen looking for something to munch on. Lo and behold, on top of the refrigerator was a partial bag of tortilla chips left over from the same activity the previous Sunday. Figuring they had to be stale I nibbled on one anyway. Son of a gun, they were not so stale that I couldn't eat them, so I proceeded to eat the entire rest of the bag. No way am I going to let perfectly good tortilla chips go to waste.
  2. OK, I'm serious this time. Bombay Curry Company in Del Ray. How about the week before Xmas. I just had a wonderful dinner there this evening with my two boys and wow, my only complaint is that they ran out of shammi kabab before we were able to order any. The wings are a "must have."
  3. Still burping from my meal at Bombay Curry Company. Tried the wings for the first time. Damn, very different from the buffalo style. I'd say they are as good as any in town and a must order on any visit to the B double C.
  4. Those of you who work downtown should beware of the White House Christmas tree lighting this evening. It is usually the worst non-weather related traffic day of the year. I'll be waiting it out at the bar at FF. Whoops, I now am informed that FF has a "buy out" tonight, so I guess I'll have to find another venue. Perhaps RK.
  5. So far, 30 people have told me that they plan to attend the Holiday Happy Hour on the 15th. I think we have room for about 5 more people. There is seating for about 25; we are allowing for some standing room.
  6. I propose that the Alexandrites gather at Bilbo Baggins to sample the fine food and experience the superior service and then come back and write about it. Come on, it'll be fun.
  7. I said "about" 20 years. My experience would have been in the mid-80's. I think the restaurant had been open for some time before I went in there.
  8. This stale, but I went once about 20-years ago for brunch and it was so bad I swore I would never go back. I mean the bottom half of my coffee was grounds. I have kept my promise. I don't know how this place has stayed in business for so long.
  9. This sounds similar to the smoked port butt chili that JohnnyRooks and I made for the last picnic.
  10. Other than the fact that Kurobota hogs and Berkshire hogs are the same variety of hog. Berkshires were introduced in Japan in the 19th century. I'm unable to find anything to suggest that Kurobota hogs are a special variety of pig in the same way that a Wagyu is a special variety of cattle. Are they raised in some special way (fed beer, given massages)? It may be that the Kurobota designation is some sort of marketing scam. But like I said, I can't seem to find much on the web about it. It even appears that most of the Berkshires raised in the US are exported to....Japan. But here is an interesting article.
  11. Al: The paste you describe is just like what I use to make chili. I don't use chili powder any more. I just use the dried chilis, stem and seed them and thn put them in a pot boiling water for a while and then run them through the blender with a little of the water. The only difference between your brisket and my chili is that I chop up the meat, you use it whole. Using the stuff on chicken sounds like it could be interesting.
  12. It is true that Firefly has limited capacity for us and that quite a few people have provided affirmative responses (23 so far). I'm checking with the poo bah's at FF to confirm our limitation. We've still got some space but I don't know how long that will last. If we reach a limit I'll let you know; there always is some flucutation so I'll start something in the nature of a waiting list if I need to.
  13. Arrangements have been made with the management at Firefly to commandeer their lounge area the evening of the 15th for a festive donrockwell.com Holiday Happy Hour. Rockweilers, one and all, are invited to join in the merriment. Who knows; perhaps we can even persuade Chef Wabeck to reprise his special Merguez lamb crepinettes for the evening. And, and, possibly some “free range” venison pâté. Please PM me if you plan to attend so that we can get something that approximates a head count. Also, PM me if you have any questions. PS: I have it on good authority that there will be another HHH scheduled at a later time for those who are unable to attend on the 15th for religious or any other reason.
  14. The "grill" sandwiches are back, on a full time basis (slightly higher prices though):
  15. Right on, Sister. The crepinette was nicely roasted on the outside with just a hint of pink in the middle. The caul fat in which it was wrapped gained at bit of crispiness during the roasting process as well. The spiciness of the Merquez was like cheap underwear, it creeps up on your ass. I was lucky, I've had two; one last night and one the night before (I had a hot tip that they would be on special Wednesday evening). The quinoa went well with crepinette and there was some pan jus to give it some soakage. The stuff is damn good. I hope they make frequent appearances.
  16. But Mark, read my phrasing closely, I didn't say it was the best in town, I only said there was nothing else like it in town. If you order the "full board" this cutting board that seems to be about a yard-square comes out covered with a variety of cured meats and pates of various sorts with an accompaniement for each. It's awesome.
  17. He'd obviously been there, there was puke on the floor. Stretch tought him some bad habits.
  18. Wow, 30,000 wine ambassadors. I wonder what the testing is like to get to the ambassador level, what kind of training they go through and what their continuing education program is like. How many training centers do they have and how many instructors staff each center?
  19. The charcuterie board; there is nothing else like it in town.
  20. Friday is almost here (well, for everybody but Don...for him, Friday hit a couple of minutes ago.) There is movement afoot for a dr.com HH at Restaurant Kolumbia tomorrow. Probably earlier rather than later. If you have never been to a dr.com happy hour, please come! We'll be the ones meticulously working our way through the charcuterie board.
  21. I think the original poster is looking for places within walking distance of the University Club. The "list" is therefore places near the University Club. Komi, Vidalia and Kolumbia belong on that list. If Vidalia is on that list, then Firefly belongs on it too. And your comment belongs under the Firefly thread. Also, another good place in the opposite direction is Corduroy at 12th and K, and should be on the "list.".
