What does this translate to; "manure spreader?"

I had lunch at the bar at Firefly perhaps a week before the holiday happy hour. Service was great and I had one of the best steak frites I've ever had anywhere. A flat iron steak cooked a perfect medium rare with the usual frites. But what set it apart was the pan reduction saucse that it was served with. It really hit the spot.

they can think all they want. But until the state legislature gives the local jurisdictions the authority to do so, it't ain't going to happen.

Section 4919 of the implementing legislation authorizes the mayor to grant exemptions in limited cirucmstances. I don't know if regulations have been promulgated yet. I don't know where the "5%" figure comes from; it's not in the legislation.

I don't disagree that it could have been drafted more clearly

Across from the Porsche dealer? And just north of the line between Alexandria and Arlington? True, close to the Pentagon Row HT, but the other location would have been fairly close to the new HT on Duke St. It doesn't surprise me that the Alexandria city fathers and mothers nixed the idea. They now have experience (read congestion) with the WF on Duke and decided that they didn't like it.

"Tobacco bars" are not subject to the smoking ban. The DC implementing legislation defines a "tobacco bar" as: Apparantly, Shelly's can meet the 10% test by including the revenue from renting on-site humidors. Here is a link to the Act. So, if you go into Shelly's make sure you buy a cigar from them, to help them remain "unique." PS: I do not know if Ozio can meet the test. I doubt it because they don't have humidors for rent.

I would characterize the food as basic bar food. Great wings and burgers. I've never had anything beyond the bar food. I go to sit on the sofas or easy chairs and smoke a cigar and sip a single malt.

Union Street Pub in Old Town makes a decent club sandwich. But I'm with you. If the sandwiches are the best thing on the menu, usually the club is what I'll go for. But I hate it when they give you stale chips (happens more frequently in the summer when it is humid).

My understanding is that the new DC smoking ban is crafted in such a way that Shelly's is the only establishment in town where smoking is permitted. Apparantly, they can include the revenue from those humidor/cigar lockers that line the east wall in whatever formula that is used to determine whether a place qualifies for the exception. I suppose another establishment could mimic Shelly's cigar locker motif and qualify.

Serving alcohol to an underage customer places the livelihood of the restaurnat, and its employees at risk. I don't understand the mindset that would punish a server by withholding a tip for refusing to serve a clearly underage customer. In DC, the restaurant loses its right to serve alcohol for a couple of days. In VA, the consequences can be much more catastrophic.

Where can I go to find a reasonable selection of their wines?PS: When I asked the question "what else am I missing," I was referring to other Kacher wines, not other importers. But it's a good topic anyway.
-
Rocks tells me that Kacher is one of the most famous wine importers in the country. I responded, maybe to you, but I found him the hard way, and I'm glad I did. My first Kacher wines I bought from Total when they used to have a section just for his wines. Unforutnatley, they no longer organnize there wines this way. I fondly remember the Chateau Campeuget (sp) cuvee pretige that I used to get (sadly no longer available). I always would have a couple of bottles on my wine rack and whenever someone would stop by, I would crack open a bottle. The prices were always about $11-13/bottle so there were quite affordable. Yesterday, I decided to experiment with a couple if different Kacher's, a Valcombe Prestige and a Montpezat Prestige. Both are wonderful and at prices similar to the Campeuget. What are other peoples' experiences with Kacher wines. What else is out there that I'm missing?
